it would be so cool to have an episode or two delving solely into deceased rides like back to the future, because it's clear that people loved them and they were probably world class during their lifetimes! maybe a halloween special for FYA? like raising these rides "from the dead" to give them some honor?

Oh man, I spent a year of my life working on this ride! I was working as a concept artist at the studio that did most of the animation for it. the ride had a completely different storyline early on. It centered around mister burns and had you in a plane trying to hunt down homer who had been turned into a giant king-kong-style gorilla by radioactive waste from the power plant. Fox had been too focused on making the simpsons movie at the time to pay attention to what was happening with the ride, but when they finished the film they fired the director of the ride and had us start from scratch again. This was partly because a couple of the voice actors refused to be in the ride, so the antagonist switched from mister burns to krusty. I got to go to one of the early tests of the ride, they had stripped out all but one of the deloreans, which was sad to see. we ran through the ride twice before I had to stop due to motion sickness haha...

I'd love Disney to take a chance on Simpsons and add a Tree House of Terror area to Hollywood Studios. I think a lot of the Fox IPs would work well there as well, including Aliens, Predator, and Planet of The Apes.

It’s interesting when Byron brought up how so much of the major IP in Universal parks isn’t actually owned by universal. They have so much iconic IP that just isn’t used? I would take a universal classic movies land over a new Wizarding World expansion any day.

Also, while I'd love to be optimistic about first party Universal attractions, we did recently get two terrible first party attractions in Jimmy Fallon and Fast & Furious. I'm not as mad about Villaincon or the DreamWorks land, and I'm definitely looking forward to Epic Universe, but... First party isn't *always* good, and often I prefer third party

As someone who didn’t have strong feelings about Universal changing the ride, the one reaction I do remember back in 2008 was… “Really? The Simpsons? This feels like it is 10 years too late.” The ride was fun and pre-show was funny. It felt like such a weird IP to put in the park.

I was at Universal Studios Florida in its first week of operation to the public. NOTHING worked except for Jaws and ET. We got on Jaws and it was terrifying. ET was a 4 hour wait so we opted out. The Earthquake ride wasn’t working but the pre ride behind the scenes was open. My sister and mom were picked to be scared shoppers on the escalator and I was “Best Boy Grip” who pulled ropes so columns fell. Still can’t believe we got on the OG Jaws!

In the outside queue the shade is made up of a lime green material so the light coming through was making our skin look yellow and it clicked that this was meant to make us look yellow like the simpsons. @1:22:40 This hit the nail on the head. Comedy might be the least evergreen thing there is, and hardest to connect to. Rather, a ride that hits on a deeper emotion will always connect to some guests. It also is easier to remember how the ride made you feel after, making it nostalgic. I cant think of one "comedy" ride that has stood up.

I think it's a generational thing really. You feel that a pokemon world or a bikini bottom world would be cool, but I think eventually, in future, there will be adults who wouldn't want that anymore because they had different I.P.'s as kids. I'm not saying the Simpsons stuff was well executed but I can see why it was chosen during that time period. It's also a little funny because no matter how much nostalgia you had for E.T. or Back to the Future, there will be a ton of younger people who will have never seen those movies. Gen Z and alpha have been exposed to very different media, even just in quantity available, then older generations and it is a wild ride talking to them about what they have or have not seen or even care about.

My hot take is not that The Simpsons Ride is good, but rather that BTTF was nearly just as bad. It basically boils down to which IP you prefer more, the only edge BTTF had was the then novelty of the ride system and having a larger cult following. Both were/are pretty ugly rides that give the same experience, hope to god that they level it for Pokemon instead of a retheme lol

Kind of annoying when you guys confuse “being objective” with “only interpreting the letter of the law” and don’t include the spirit of it.
To explain the difference, let me use a park example. Let’s say there’s a sign that says “no vehicles” in order to stop cars or such from driving where there are children actively playing. If you only took the letter of the law and applied that, then strollers would have to be banned from the park because they are vehicles.
But, applying the rule of the sign that way would almost be as absurd as giving the Simpsons ride a point for not ending too early. Clearly, the test was designed (its spirit was) to gauge how good the duration of the ride felt, not simply if it was too short.
I love this podcast and will enjoy every episode that releases, but after this ride passed the “premature detrackulation test” and figment passed the “smart phone test,” I felt like I wanted to make a comment

Born in 85 here. I grew up in SoCal LOVING the Simpsons. Always remember talking to my friends at school on the episode that had just aired the night before and just laughing. If we ever met kids who didn’t like the show we always thought it was weird haha or there would be kids whose parents wouldn’t allow them to watch it haha. Carried that through high school even! Still raving about the episode aired the night before. Then the seasons got weird and I stopped watching but I’ll always watch the early seasons.
So when I first went to universal studios for the first time, this was the ride I was excited for and boy those jokes didn’t disappoint. My husband and I had just started dating then and we just laughed all the way through the ride. One of my most fondest memories.

ok i am definitely basing my love for this ride on nostalgia bc the first time i rode it as a kid it was like. fine. but in 2018 my school went to Grad Bash at Universal Orlando. the mix of excitement and nervousness and freedom that came from a bunch of teenagers were set loose in two theme parks all night only weeks-to-days from our graduations was so great. my friends and i ended up in a big cluster of kids from my school, and the whole queue thing was so fun to go through with them. i think it was around midnight, and we were all giggly and a little overtired. the memory of it has made it one of my favorite rides at that park.

  • @jackprather81
    @jackprather81 3 месяца назад

I was just getting back into theme parks when I rode this for the first time so I had no context for the ride system at the time. If you had interviewed me and the person I was with after getting off we would have shown that "bounce" and we would have quoted a couple of the laugh lines as the highlights. This attraction is genuinely funny and I guess that's all I really needed from it at the time.
I would be interested to hear anyone offer another theme park attraction with as many actual laughs as The Simpsons has. I'm coming up empty. Most "funny" attractions have 1-2 decent gags or just a good premise. I can't remember riding anything else that has made me genuinely laugh like this one did.
That said, I agree that it shouldn't win the title of World Class Attraction.

I am a big Simpsons fan (particularly of seasons 3-9) and I felt that the ride did a very good job showcasing what I love about the show which is the writing and the characters.
The signature moment of a Simpsons ride for me should be the jokes and there are a lot of jokes I love on this ride such as Ralph saying “I’m a baby bird,” Homer’s reaction to Marge saying that Bob is trying to kill the kids, the Itchy and Scratchy safety spiel, and pretty much everything with Sideshow Bob who’s one of my many favorite characters of the show. I’m lucky enough that I don’t get sick on the ride so I do enjoy the motion.
I’m not gonna defend it as a world class attraction as I do agree that it’s too long and the animation’s looks bad. I’m also sad to not see the Harry Shearer characters like Burns, Flanders, and Smithers. But I do personally have a great time with The Simpsons Ride and it satisfies my love for both the show and theme park attractions. I will take this over Transformers every day.

And Harry was fair. Why would they expect the voice actors to work for free?????

I really like Simpsons ride, but in my opinion Transformers is better. I think transformers is better because it’s definitely a motion simulator that really moves you around, more intense than most other simulators in the park like minions and the Simpsons. I also think the queue is better since it’s indoors, perfect to wait in during the summer months, and I like the futuristic look of it.
I think what’s better about the Simpsons is the overall presentation of it, the ride building definitely sticks out compared to every other ride in the park because of its bright colors and giant Krusty head. But what is really hurting the Simpsons ride is its age. I did the ride last week and it felt like at any moment we were just going to detach from the platform and fall because there were very loud creaking sounds during the start of it. I don’t want to genuinely doubt if I am 100% safe on a ride.

This is my biggest complaint about universal studios. There are too many screen based simulator rides. People like to exalt as a way to crap on Disney. But universal really neglected it’s original FL park. Last time I was there I was bored with a lot of the rides because of all the screen based rides.

A Disney Treehouse of horror land would interest me more than a Disney Villans Land. Putting the Springfield people in parodies and rooting for the family in dofferent situation woukd work better than villians just being one note bad.

Thank you for addressing the 60 fps elephant in [every] room. There is no context in which that frame rate doesn't look goofy, unrealistic, and non-immersive.

I have been a Simpson fan since childhood, I love the show -watch every THOH during spooky season. I found it super fun to walk through the land and go to places like Krusty burger.
I can’t speak to the ride- it was the first ride we did that day and it instantly made me so so sick. I had to stare at my feet the whole time. Idk if it was a combo of the screen and animation style but it messed me up for almost the entire day. I had to go sit in krusty burger for about 45 minutes before I could power through to start walking again.
Other screen rides can make me a bit off but this one was on a whole different level.

This ride always ruins my back almost as much as the Matterhorn. But I do remember having my head bounce off the side door on Back to the Future as a kid when I was sitting on one of the edge seats. Didn’t hurt as it’s flexible plastic, but it surprised me. Same thing happened on Star Tours when I sat on a top corner seat.
It’s a ride I only go on if I have an express pass, as I’m not waiting any longer than 10-15 minutes without it. I like the Simpsons but not enough to go every trip.
And definitely agree about Tree House of Horror. They’re the only episodes I love watching every year as anything goes in them. I love that they’re not canon, but are just pure ridiculousness. Would have loved to see a ride that can do that if they were gonna go with a “Fantasyland Dark Ride” style ride. Just pure cheese while throwing light horror at us.

Lower frame rate would get you more sick.
I bought an N64 at launch and then basically couldn’t use it because the games were 20fps on a good day. I’m almost ready to vomit just thinking about that POS.
Motion smoothing on a TV looks weird because they have to guess details of anything that is rotating, but mostly because it makes everything move smoothly, even things that are not supposed to move at all smoothly.

I’m a Simpsons super fan, and no, this ride is not everything I’d want it to be. The humor and queue are great, but the sickness inducing motion simulator and bad 3D renderings do the Simpsons dirty.

Seems like this ride is judged on what it used to be and not on the current ride itself, which is disappointing. I feel like this should be judged on its own merit. It will never be judged fairly, especially by non-Simpsons fans.
