I loved this topic, thank you Dada. Looking forward to the next lesson, and these lessons are occurring at just the right time for me, as I was just contemplating these very thoughts recently.
I’d like to expand on two of the things you said a bit: a) “a yogi looks into himself and sees the entire universe there. […] On the physical level […] it is impossible.” Actually, there are reflections of this phenomenon in the physical world too. For example in holograms. If you cut a hologram into pieces, then - unlike a photo taken with your camera - each part still contains the whole scene. You can see a simple demonstration of this for example here: ruclips.net/video/9qpFAqZb-D4/видео.html This phenomenon is the namesake of the holographic universe theory. b) “Ego is a demarcation line, your individual existence. [...] The consciousness has chosen to identify itself with a fraction of its being. [...] That identification, that mechanism through which we maintain the individual identity, is called ego.” That’s an important topic and I’d like to zoom into it a bit closer. The mind always tends to identify itself with something. Whether it’s your body, a role you are playing in society, a common concern of a group of people, an abstract idea, the life of this planet, or the life of the whole universe… There is always some identification. This is because the mind exists in the world of forms. The mind by itself is not conscious, it is the mechanism formless consciousness is gazing at the world of forms. The ego is a specific kind of identification and I think there are two largely equivalent ways to put it: 1. The ego is the identification with thoughts. 2. The ego is the identification with the manomaya-kosha. Notice that thoughts are always talking to you in a human language, which is a creation of the manomaya-kosha. There is a theory that a long time ago, when our ancestors first experienced thoughts, they experienced it similarly to what today we know as schizophrenia, i.e., literally as voices talking to them - because those voices just have not been there before. Those voices probably were talking in primitive precursors of human language available at that time, and they didn’t understand where those voices were coming from. Over time those voices became so omnipresent that they absorbed all of our attention, then the mind developed more complex languages to support those voices to express themselves, and now we live fully immersed in the world of thoughts to the point that we tend to believe that we are nothing but the thoughts we perceive. If you had no manomaya-kosha, and hence no complex language, and hence no complex thoughts, you would still identify yourself with something - and most likely you would identify yourself with the kamamaya-kosha, i.e., the desires of your physical body. This would be different from the phenomenon of ego. For example, there would be hardly any tendency to grow beyond what is needed for your body to survive. If your stomach was empty, you had a problem. If your stomach was full, you’d be satisfied. But for us, due to the ego, precisely when the stomach is full that one problem of hunger is replaced by 1000 problems constructed by the ego, not from how we perceive life, but from how we imagine how life could be. The ego cannot be conquered by fighting. That creates another ego. The ego can only be transcended by developing an awareness of what is going on. This implies a shift in one’s identification from the world of thoughts and the manomaya-kosha to the upper koshas that exist beyond thoughts. Our thoughts don’t go away, just like our bodily desires didn’t go away when we created the ego. But as we become aware of the fact that we exist independently of our thoughts, we can shine a light on them and see them for what they are and not be controlled by them. The ego is almost like an AI in our mind. It has no awareness of its own. It is like a computer program processing information and reacting to it - unconsciously, based on how it has been conditioned. We cannot control the emergence of thoughts and we cannot fight or suppress them. We can, however, become aware of what they are and shift our attention from a stream of thoughts that is not helpful to a stream of thoughts that is more in alignment with how we want to experience life, or even a state without thoughts, pure focused attention to our sensory perceptions, just perceiving life how it really is right here right now. When I started meditation, one of the first things that happened is that in everyday life, again and again, I had those moments where suddenly I wondered: “what am I doing here… this is just so silly… I do not really want to do this.” When that realization is there, change becomes a whole lot easier. For example, I was quite obese before - 97 kg for 1.69 m height. Once I went from that old idea “oh, I would like to lose some pounds” to a realization of how silly my eating habits have been and how this affected the way I experienced life, I lost 30 kg within a couple of months without so much struggle, at the same time went from vegetarian to vegan, and later on developed a much healthier diet altogether, now consisting of only organically grown foods, many of which I never ate before, and ultimately I got rid of all the growing number the meds I’ve been on. Before that, I kept adding yet another pill for yet another problem. Some years later, now I don’t need any meds anymore. That awareness of what is really going on in your mind is key. Otherwise, change is an idea of the ego itself, and you end up almost like suffering from a multiple personality disorder. Before you had one mad ego, now you have two mad egos fighting each other, and quite possibly sooner or later a third one suffering from the fight. But when we develop a certain awareness of what is going on, we can take a step back, shine a light on it, and look at it consciously. Actually, from my experience, we don’t really “do” that, it just happens as the awareness arises. We are no longer running on auto-pilot 100% of the time. We can, more and more often, experience our lives from a perspective above thoughts, which is the realm of the ego, and, thereby, transcend the ego.
Very good video, and comment. I agree, transcending the egoic structure permits a clarity of awareness with which we may examine our experience. The difficulty, for me at least, is the effort needed to remain in this state of transcendence. There seems a natural tendency to succumb to the ego due to circumstance, emotions, external demands etc. So the question is, how do you stay enlightened or in that state of spiritual clarity?
"So the question is, how do you stay enlightened or in that state of spiritual clarity?" I wish there'd been a response. Have you learned how to do so in the past two years?
Love this topic. Thank you Dada. I'll follow that which are required to turn enemies into friends and break my bondages. Looking forward to the next video.
Excellent explanations and analogies, Dada, especially the discussion regarding the qualities of our true nature and the purpose of our practice -- to be liberated of the fetters and enemies of our mind. In myself I sense an extra challenge in overcoming criticising and judging others in the very quiet recesses within me. It used to be more pronounced, yet after much work, I still very subltely judge people in my mind. I hope to recieve some advice in overcoming this in the next videos to come. Thank you for another inspiring and enlightened video. Namaskar
Love - Helps so much with the Constant Evolution of Practice in Understanding this Ongoing Conflict while Swimming through these Muddy waters towards this Greater Supreme Consciousness & Flow - Thank you Dada Sadananda, as always
Very good video. Thank you. Your presentation of concepts is clear and thought provoking. The egoic nature certainly seems to dominate with a significant circus routine. I suppose the question is why? It would seem the ego is in denial of its illusionary existence. I suppose it is a simple matter of polarity, we must have finite if we are to have infinite. It's all truly fascinating.
I love all of yours topics , they are so beautiful and the teachings are so profound.. I’ve been listening to your videos for quite some time now and I find in every one of them there’s something new even though there’s so many! Very grateful and inspiring. Dada, I have one question please, can you talk about your thoughts on Ayahuasca, it’s something I don’t want to do as I believe in slow progress rather than fast one buts just wanted to hear your ideas on it. Thank you forever, in full gratitude 🙏
🙏 For the masses ( those who are not yet at all resonating )spirituality sounds like some hippie thing, a hobby for a special group or a thing you can do on your sparetime from your "normal, ordinary" life, take a few steps on the spiritual path.. If the true human nature is not what it is now and if human is the only species with the possibility for the so called enlightenment, why not talk about humanness ?(instead of spirituality) would this maybe increase the evolving of the humanness in human?
Dada i need your help. I come from a household where i been beaten and insulted multiple times throughout my childhood. Now that i am older (23 years old) I find it very hard to be near my family. I have already lived alone for the past 3 years and done some meditation and decided to move back near them, because i felt alone and wanted us all to be happy. The problem about it is that they continue to be without respect towards me. I've tried many times to talk about this problem with them but they don't seem to understand. I'm thinking of not letting them participate anymore in my life, since i feel like they don't respect me and want the best of me. How can I overcome this problem?
Miguel, the best way to change situation with your relatives is to change attitude to himself and to your famaly. Hopefully this videos can help you. ruclips.net/video/5bEUCNA9u90/видео.html ruclips.net/video/tGcSmzs37Z0/видео.html
We really do need to stop using that word. The idea that there is ‘goal’ is the definition of spiritual materialism. Something to ‘get’ that we don’t currently have. The egoic self cannot experience the transcendental because it is confined to the mental layer. Let’s drop all this attainment business maybe?

No other spiritual leader that I have encountered could explain things and the unexplainable in English like you dada. Thank you 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thank You sir! I feel as though your teaching will help me to progress toward a spiritual path. I look forward to the other lessons. Peace 🙏🏻❤️
