More like he made it sound like real electronic music, because in most cases, the NES soundchip is better than the Genesis. But even Tim Follin made the Genesis sound not like the Genesis in the only game he did that wasn't even released, Time Trax.
Tim and Geoff Follin both seemed to really know how to work the "rapid arpeggios" and various other effects that noone else could've ever figured out before the NES was rendered obsolete. I'd like to hear something of theirs reworked with the "Sunsoft Bass". Now THAT would be something of Epic Proportions! I don't think anything could contain that level of awesome!!!
World Theme 1 is one of the only truly mind melting NES soundtracks if you ask me. I wish I was around to see the faces of the Follin Brothers when making this piece.
I am a former electronic music developer. The technical complexitiy of this soundtrack must have been a challenge to artistically separate the channels to stereo as you did here. Great job !
I've known about this ost for a couple years now, and I still can't wrap my head around how good this sounds, OR how well-written it is. It's like it isn't good "for NES music" or "given the limitations of the system" or whatever - it's just really good music. This stuff I would blare from my car, or use to try to teach myself musical techniques. BTW, I'm not sure if everyone knows, but there are a few remakes of Tim Follin tunes on OverClocked Remix, including the second BGM from Silver Surfer. (On the site you can search by original composer). Oh and Mr. Wiiguy309 - great freaking job enhancing all the NES music like you've done, it really does add something!
No problem man, you're being more kind. You're totally right, and although the Follins were the cream of the crop at this stuff, it's a shame that there's nothing with such limited technology that music gets written for - we definitely would have seen more highly talented composers of it. Since technology marches on, it was a necessarily limited number of years. Do you know of other composers for NES and other older consoles who took such pains to create great music? I mean there's catchy, and there's this. The Follin way seems to have been to disregard the limited audience of the music, forget what it's for, just make damn good music, top priority. Like they made the music as a hobby or for some kind of band, and it just happened to also be featured in the games. I guess in short they were highly overqualified, not that video games don't deserve good music. Sorry, I rant - it's my writing style :)
It's too bad this soundtrack couldn't have been used on a better game. While Silver Surfer isn't the worst game ever made or anything, it's overly difficult and extremely unforgiving. If they had added a life bar and gave you some kind of chance, then the difficulty would have been evened out and the game wouldn't have been nearly as bad. I'm sure fans of SHMUPS might really enjoy the game, especially those who like those ridiculous bullet hell SHMUPS.
Would you consider "Life Force" or "Gradius" to be overly difficult or unforgiving? There's no life bar in those games either, yet no one complains about them. This game was much easier and more fair in my opinion.
There's a difference between a game being the well made kind of difficult (Gradius, TwinBee/Stinger, Dark Souls) and one being difficult due to poor game mechanics.
Funny enough I have not been able to beat Gradius or Life Force to the best of my attempts, yet I can easily beat Silver Surfer. I certainly like Silver Surfer a whole lot more in terms of design, difficulty and of course soundtrack, until I am able to beat Gradius and Life Force I will decide how it fairs. Though I would say for now that yes Gradius and Life Force are a bit overly difficulty.
***** Hey Wiiguy, which stage in Silver Surfer do you find the easiest and hardest? I think Possessor is the easiest and Mephisto is the hardest. If you die against Mephisto you're pretty much screwed, cause your wimpy weapon won't beat him.
Who of us hoped for a Tim Follin return? Finally it is! After so many years of silence Tim Follin launched a Kickstarter campaign for a videogame and a cd with new/rearranged masterpieces only a talent like him can make! If we like Tim Follin we have no excuse being *active* and pledge some money for his *value* work. Go to Kickstarter web site and search for 'Contradiction Tim Follin'.
Yes indeed! Even if its something I would have never seen coming, or entirely like that much. But still, this is Tim Follin, still gotta show my love for him and what he has done. At least he is doing music again! :P
I agree every single statement! And who can't pledge some money can still be *very* *very* helpful by bombarding Facebook pages, videogames web sites, forums etc. asking space for the return of the legend Tim Follin!
***** That's pretty much what I said. The game was so difficult but I loved the music. And the Surfer. I rented it over and over in spite of how damn hard it humped my face.
I mean they sound great in mono of course, but putting it into stereo just adds a nice little bit of depth. Thank you for doing such a good job with this, it sounds even better than it did on the NES :)
Kristina Rain don't think it did though, all of this was achieved without the usage of pcm samples :) just 2 pulse waves, triangle wave and a noise channel
I can't believe I used to be so good at this game I could beat it without losing a life. Must have died like a billions times before I got that good. Man my brother was so pissed when I kept asking our parents to rent this game repeatedly. I was obsessed with beating with this game for like 6 months.
don't know why you're complaining about the mixing.. and especially about the picture.. the echo effect is okay.. and to listen to that OST in stereo is just great! nobody is forcing you to look at the pic.. and it's not the general idea of uploading an OST.. imho we should be delighted.. that there is somebody who's uploading such great retro OST stuff!
Just amazing... you are a God for doing this for 8bit game's music. I have worshiped the music genre since I was a kid in the 80's and it has NEVER sounded so rich and good! Thank you!
AWESOME MUSIC MAN! please keep it going! you are great! would you mind doing the same for Action 52! I think there is great music in some games! thank you!
I love that the godly music of a Follin has reminded someone of all games, that Action 52 has good music, which it does. I will plan that to be up some time, has been requested, amazingly :P
I feel your pain!!! * Silver Surfer: Uh-oh!! Here comes a rubber duck that I can't shoot down! Maybe it's just part of the background! It's just gotta be.... Rubber Duck: NOPE!! *DOOOOOOOOOOON!!* and cue shot of Silver Surfer's dome cowering in fear. He has infinte powers and can destroy entire universes... but he can't take down one little rubber ducky!!! LOL
Sweet job on this dude. You need to do 'Austin Powers: Welcome to My Underground Lair!' for GBC. Check it out if you haven't before, it's such a weird game to have good music but it fucking rocks.
Aaack, like I'm a total reverb junkie, but this is just too much reverb for such a fast and tight soundtrack. I usually LOVE your upmixes, but this one feels like it needs tweaking.
With all seriousness, Silver Surfer is not a bad game, it requires lots of try and error, but every level is quite short and full of checkpoints, the only fatal flaw I can come up with is that you can't hold the button to keep shooting. But just listening this badass soundtrack is a bonus, so really not much to complain.

Even AVGN likes this Stereo OST.
NES music has no business sounding this damn good.
Tim Follin made the NES sound like a Genesis.
More like he made it sound like real electronic music, because in most cases, the NES soundchip is better than the Genesis. But even Tim Follin made the Genesis sound not like the Genesis in the only game he did that wasn't even released, Time Trax.

***** The NES sound chip is better than the Genesis? I don't see how that is logical.
damn...i guess you havent heard Castlevania Bloodlines, Sonic 3, Gunstar Heores or The Streets of Rage.which kicks most of the nes game library's ass.
chelo abreu You forgot about Contra Hard Corps.
(Jaw drops) This music is kickass, coming from a seemingly impossible thing, The Nerd should have pointed out how good the music was.
The JGD did it. Go check it out on his comics no 2 video.
He did in his most recent episode. He has the soundtrack on vinyl.
World Theme 1 is one of the only truly mind melting NES soundtracks if you ask me. I wish I was around to see the faces of the Follin Brothers when making this piece.
Sadly, the talent went pretty much wasted on a little-known and very average NES game.
Sit back and let Tim Follin make sweet love to your ears.
Rurfs oh yes!
Absolutely!!!!
Yeah man
Don't forget Geoff.
I am a former electronic music developer. The technical complexitiy of this soundtrack must have been a challenge to artistically separate the channels to stereo as you did here. Great job !
TigerBearCatBrandon he recreates the music.
And detail: he only used the main 4 channels, seriously!
It's like he didn't knew the existence of the DPCM/Sample 5th channel!
Impressive!

That is what makes NES music so great, the creation of greatness out of so little and limited technology. And thanks for your kind words :)
No problem man, you're being more kind.

You're welcome ;^D
“All right, this is Silver Surfer... SILVER SHIT!” - AVGN
Yeah.

Holy s*it! These are NES sounds?!?!!!!
How on earth did they manage this! Incredible
Ahhh, Silver Surfer on the NES... I rented this many times. Something about getting raped in the face to killer tunes...
*****
That's pretty much what I said. The game was so difficult but I loved the music. And the Surfer. I rented it over and over in spite of how damn hard it humped my face.
Diogmetes LOL Oh man, this made me laugh so hard.
You don't hear too many NES games where you get a full drum sound (Snare, Kick, Cymbal), bass, and two melody tracks. Shit is insane.
I mean they sound great in mono of course, but putting it into stereo just adds a nice little bit of depth. Thank you for doing such a good job with this, it sounds even better than it did on the NES :)
world theme 1.... it´s something that is over all videogames ost. Masterpiece.
if that art cover would have been a kickass blacklight poster. I would definitely buy it
Hooked up to a surround system, this sounds amazing.
We can debate "best", but jesus you can't debate that this is the highest "quality" 8-bit music ever composed
Follin soundtracks certainly rank in the NES music on the console, they just knew how to make the soundchip their bitch :P
I think the music took more space on the cartridge than the actual gaem
Kristina Rain
don't think it did though, all of this was achieved without the usage of pcm samples :) just 2 pulse waves, triangle wave and a noise channel
Jesus Christ is Lord
I had no idea Silver Surfer had such an awesome OST.
World 1. Whoa/Wow. I was skeptical of the crazy praise.... but.... BANGS HEAD
I can't believe I used to be so good at this game I could beat it without losing a life. Must have died like a billions times before I got that good.

Wow, no more words to say to this music, just wow ...
"He looks so stupid! I mean, what the hell is wrong with him?"
-AVGN
Bought it 4 days ago and I took the cart apart to clean it and wow... big chips! Sound chips?
haha you bought this game...
Yep and?
And now you own it.
obviously
Just amazing... you are a God for doing this for 8bit game's music. I have worshiped the music genre since I was a kid in the 80's and it has NEVER sounded so rich and good! Thank you!
WTF, this is the dream soundtrack with the two Follin joined together ! Fits well the epicness of the silver surfer, hell yeah !!
This is a great mix. The reverb is a bit heavy in certain areas but overall you've done the song justice.
i used to pop in my old cartridge - just to listen to intro and play stage one.. for the music lol.
Tim Follin really pushed the limits of the NES sound chip, this sounds like what the Genesis could do.
And for the Genesis, he pushed the chip to the point it didn't even sound like a chip.
artman40 wait...what titles did he do on Genesis?
Time Trax.
If you open the cart, you will see it had a huge SONY sound chip that no other NES game had.
Hwarming oooh watch out sega!
Never got to play the game but LOVE the music!
If you can take the challenge, play the game ;3
If *THERE'LL BE* a MvC4 with Silver Surfer on it, his theme should be 3:51.
Thanks for the reliable download link.
Finally found the Laser Time music!
Thanks for uploading this in stereo! It sounds great! Tim follin has always been my favorite NES composer. He should see this video and comment on it!
Mi madre me dio la vida, pero el ost de este juego las ganas de vivirla
oh yes indeed Tim and Geoff , Love the fading arps , so so so good
Such gods :D
Amazing music, indeed. Just... amazing...
played and beat this game many times. music and challenge kept me playing all the time.
Freaking World Theme 1, What a panic inducing hyper rage of awesomeness.
My 2nd favorite NES soundtrack just below Gimmick
Tim Follin - great 8-bit composer, this game shit, music cool!
great stuff man - been listening to your playlist all day.
Cool I like how everything from music side of the game is in the video. Very hard game but worth playing because of music.
Difficulty aside, it's actually kinda fun.
Follin at his finest or their finest, rather. this was so intricate for an nes game. fuckin mind blowing
The title screen music and BGM I always get all the attention, but I think the Hi-Score theme is pretty rad. I kinda want it to be my ringtone.
god DAYUM this music never sounded so damn good
It's just makes me sad that this awesome soundtrack is wasted for this game.
i will give you thumbs up, but after playing this game, you don't have any
Good thing the music is awesome, cuz you're going to hear it a LOT playing that game.
What an overly hard game with an AMAZING soundtrack!
Precisely!
Now this is what i call the best 8 bit music back in 1990!
World Theme 1 is my Jaaaaaaaaaam
The worst games have the best soundtracks
You got that select screen, kinda like Mega Man. AVGN Quote
soooo trippy & badass at the same time!
This soundtrack kicks ass.
Time to dance!
3:43 was BOSS !!
Silver surfer the actual game < Soundtrack
Only cool or unique thing about this game.
For sure a very awesome soundtrack
Yeah, I thought this music had similarities with that of Solstice. Amazing.
amazing score! :)
follin the GODS!! i put this entire 15 minute on my ipod
"Approved by WiiGuy!"
Best ost ever.
AWESOME MUSIC MAN! please keep it going! you are great! would you mind doing the same for Action 52! I think there is great music in some games! thank you!
I love that the godly music of a Follin has reminded someone of all games, that Action 52 has good music, which it does. I will plan that to be up some time, has been requested, amazingly :P
best dubstep i ever heard
subbed, this is awesome, I recently did a guitar cover of the title screen track :D
For more Follin goodness, you should check out Magic Johnson's Fast Break if you haven't already. There are some really good tunes there.
This is probably some of Tim Follins best work right here. Especially BGM #2
What fucking sexy ass effect is THAT!??!!
wow this soundtrack really blow me away
its fucking incredible
I feel your pain!!! *
Silver Surfer: Uh-oh!! Here comes a rubber duck that I can't shoot down! Maybe it's just part of the background! It's just gotta be....
Rubber Duck: NOPE!!
*DOOOOOOOOOOON!!*
and cue shot of Silver Surfer's dome cowering in fear.
He has infinte powers and can destroy entire universes... but he can't take down one little rubber ducky!!! LOL
Can you do the Darkman NES soundtrack?
Yep, the most I know about this game is from the AVGN review. The soundtrack is pretty kickass though.
This is funky ~ ~
Some tunes of world 2 reminds me of megaman 3...got it! sounds when u beat the boss and get weapon!
There is sound in space. You just need to be in contact w/what's making the sound so it transmits.
Or be capable of perceiving what's in the medium. If someone could actually perceive dark matter for example.
Actually. The music is only made by Tim... He wrote all his NES-classics in MML. Fucking genious!
Sweet job on this dude. You need to do 'Austin Powers: Welcome to My Underground Lair!' for GBC. Check it out if you haven't before, it's such a weird game to have good music but it fucking rocks.
Thanks, and for that game please post requests here: ruclips.net/video/yOIRIAynF58/видео.html or on my Channel Discussion! :)
***** Why did you add an echo to the soundtrack?
It's kind of odd too because there have been a few times when a game has great music and he makes note of it. Like the pause screen in Battletoads...
NICE : )
aw yeah!
If the game wasn't hard, this would have been good. Otherwise, I loved the soundtrack!
tim follin what a genius
Didn't know the the Follins been making music since the NES days!
if you skipped the "title screen" you automatically skipped a stage by accident .... (cause you know, this song is quite long and amazing )
The music while limited, is very catchy.
3:50, Shovel Knight?
oh look here's an out of work mixing engineer trying to sound like he knows what he's talking about! there's no reverb, but nice word drop!
Tim Follin = best
"I CANT TOUCH THAT RED POT!"
Aaack, like I'm a total reverb junkie, but this is just too much reverb for such a fast and tight soundtrack. I usually LOVE your upmixes, but this one feels like it needs tweaking.
personally I consider silver surfer the hardest game of NES
Silver Surfer the long lost brother of Dark Soul's
With all seriousness, Silver Surfer is not a bad game, it requires lots of try and error, but every level is quite short and full of checkpoints, the only fatal flaw I can come up with is that you can't hold the button to keep shooting. But just listening this badass soundtrack is a bonus, so really not much to complain.
Easier to say a game is bad, than to admit to oneself that they're bad, least in this narcissistic world.
Stereo Surfer.
