  • Would it even be a lovely baker video if I didnt come out late?:D Thanks so much for watching, I hope you enjoy this Charizard cake! What did you think of the new Detective Pikachu movie?

    Threaded Rods: The two used for his legs were 5' tall by 3/8 16th and the center one was 12'tall by 3/8-16th. I used nuts that corresponded with the width of the threaded rods
    Cake Boards: Main board was 16 inches. I used 2 cut outs of corrugated plastic for the board so that it was extra strong. Do not use just one layer of thing cardboard because it will not be able to support the weight. Make sure whatever you are using is firm. I picked mine up from the Dollar Store.

    Gel Colors in Wilton:
    Charizards body: Orange with just a tiny bit of copper mixed in
    Charizards Mouth: Red with a tiny bit of black and violet mixed in
    Charizards inner wings: Royal Blue with a tiny bit of black
    Charizards Eye: Base is light royal blue then painted over with straight royal blue food coloring

    I scaled this up to fit comfortably on my 16 inch board and traced the outline of the body excluding the wings or arms.

    Modelling Chocolate: sugargeekshow....
    Chocolate Ganache- place 1200g dark chocolate (I use Callebaut brand) with 600mg heavy (35%, you have to weigh it out as well do not measure out in mls) cream into a microwaveable bowl. Microwave for 30 second intervals and mix the chocolate really well in-between until it is melted. Be careful not to burn or overheat your chocolate, your mixing should do most of the work of melting the choc. Once it has melted place plastic wrap directly on top of the chocolate and let sit on the counter to set up, in the fridge if you need it asap. ganache is ready to use when it is at a peanut butter consistency. If it sets too firm just microwave for 10 second bursts until its back to a peanut butter consistency.

    It’s so great to see someone working with modeling chocolate for sculpted cakes! I can never figure out why people don’t use it more, especially for characters, and I’ve always wondered if I’m just missing something. It seems to me that it’s easier to blend and work with, stays workable for longer, doesn’t tear as easily, and tastes better. It’s great to see such a detailed cake using this medium! Any chance you could talk a bit more about why and when you choose one over the other? I’d be so curious to hear your thoughts. Thank you, this turned out fantastically!

      People don't use it more often because its expensive af. Fondant is way cheaper. I would use modeling chocolate if it were cheaper.

      @@kristenj4168 Oh I've actually never thought of that! Since I usually make my own fondant and my own modeling chocolate one never really struck me as that much more expensive than the other, but I'm also not making massive quantities, either. I always thought people found fondant substantially better to use, for some reason I didn't understand, since it's the industry standard.

      Thank you for the question! For me, my main reason for not trying it sooner was because it took me soooooo long to figure out fondant that another medium just seemed daunting and I didn't see a lot of other people using MC when I first started. It wasn't until I saw people like Liz from sugar geek show and Shauna from Mcgreevy cakes using it and making amazing stuff that I really felt like I needed to give it a go since I was never really happy with how my fondant looked on my character cakes. I make my fondant and MC and the price difference is not that big for me (I know this will not be the same for everyone depending on local prices) so that wasn't really a deterrent. Charizard was only my 4th ever time using modelling chocolate so I'm definitely in need of more practice, but it is already so much easier for me to do certain things with and I think we are going to have a long and happy life together lol. Fondant will always be my go to for covering my cakes since modelling chocolate just doesnt have the same stretch and ive gotten so used to it now that unless i need to panel a cake I doubt I'd reach for modeling chocolate. But besides that I could easily see MC replacing most other things in my life. Definitely is a must for me with character cakes now, not only does it blend out but the firmness in which it sets just adds another layer of support to a cake. I would for sure be willing to do a pros and cons video one day but I think I just need more time with it to really figure out when it works and when it doesnt.

    I just watched detective Pikachu on Sunday. There was so much nostalgia for me (since I was a kid that played Pokémon)

      That was my biggest take away too, so must nostalgia!! just had to not think about the fact that I was one of the 6 or 7 people in the packed theatre without kids 😂 28 and no shame lol!!

    This cake looks great! Just wanted to give you a tip about the modeling chocolate. Instead of using a tool to blend seams you can dip your fingers in water and smooth that way. That's what I do. It's super easy and won't ruin the modeling chocolate or affect how hard it dries. Anyway, keep up the great work!

    I've never attempted to make modelling chocolate, but I reeeeeally don't like fondant, so maybe I'll have to go all out one day! :P

      Yes!! You have to try it. Trust me. Fondant works well for so many things but modelling chocolate is such a game changer for more intricate 3d cakes and the final result is much cleaner looking than what I could do with fondant. For sure give it a go👍😁

    How did you make into a tear drop shape? Did you have both templates from the side and back as well?

      Once I used the template on the front to help me figure out how wide/skinny I needed to make him I pretty much just eyeballed the rest as the back was the same shape (he had a little more junk in the trunk but not much) and I just rounded out the sides. The reference photo linked in the description box is what acted as my main guide. I always just take off little by little as I go😊

    Well, say a little prayer for me, my boyfriend wants me to make him an Ampharos cake for his birthday. I'm just a beginner!! But I welcome the challenge and think I'll try using modelling chocolate as you mentioned.
    Mine certainly won't be standing though, I'm not up to that! I think I'll go with a seated teddy shape as a base template and then make the body more of a pear shape.

    This was fantastic! How many hours total did it take? Funny story (I live in Orlando) so I was practicing with modeling chocolate & it kept getting soft really fast so I was frustrated & remembered that I have this bowl in my freezer that I use to make ice cream in, so I took the bowl & put it on my table & kept putting my ziploc bags with the modeling chocolate in the bowl to get cold really quick. It worked! Lol what you do for cake! 😆

      Girl way too many hours😭😂 I think this was 3 days from morning to night. And quick thinking on the modelling chocolate lol! Nothing like MacGyvering a problem into a solution😂
