~13 :50 When my children have fever, I never treated them with antipyretic medication for the purposes of lowering their body temperature. If they have significant pain, I will of course offer them painkillers (which have anti-pyretic side-effects). They usually do not want pain killers. There is no convincing evidence that lowering a child's body temperature reduces the likelihood of febrile seizures. On the contrary, giving antipyretic medication may well lower the threshold for seizures associated with infections - i.e., antipyretics increase the risk of seizures. Fever is one way in which we fight infections (as do most animals). Lowering the body temperature undermines this benefit when we have an infection. Fever is also neuro-protective, this is why physicians who practice evidence based medicine do not treat the fever that can follow a stroke. The fever mechanisms actually reduce the overall damage to the brain a person gets when they have a stroke. Two of my three children have had febrile convulsions, so I have looked heavily into this. I think the two that suffered with these seizures may have both grown out of it now. Still, I have argued with nurses and medics who wanted to give paracetamol after a seizure. I strongly declined, not wanting to remove any possible benefit from such neuroprotection. Nurses tend to want the record to show they did the right thing, they should assure themselves that they have offered the parent an antipyretic to the child and record this in their notes, they do not need to labour their offers - and also look into the research of this topic, they will be surprised
I would like to share my quick story: so i had a prolonged GTC febrile when i had pneumonia at 5-6 months old. then everything fine, had a vaccine, temp, then another seizure. After this i developed seizures. i'm going now to a epilepsy monitoring centre for a couple of weeks to see their semiology and what can we do about them; wish me luck ❤ Love to always watch your informative videos Dr Omar; continue the awesome work. My 17 mos old just had a febrile seizure today, viral infection. It was very terrifying. I am a nurse of 13 years, and still very traumatic to see in your own child. Hoping he never has another.
This is so informative .My daughter is three and she has had 5 episodes since birth. All episodes lasts less than five minutes , the doctor always tells me ts a viral infection in the blood and she will outgrow the seizures by age five or six scares me to death those episodes even with this information my heart will still be racing when temperature reaches 37 coz i know anytime she will start shaking
My son is 2, had his first febrile seizure at 11 months, and now has them 80% of the time he has fevers. It is the freaking worst. He has focal and simple.

My son suffered 11 seizures in a 9 months period. It started when he was 9 months old untill he was 18 months old. It was so scary to witness that. Now he is a six year old boy and is diagnosed with autism. I believe that somehow its it had something to do with his autism because he always had fevers when he was overstimulated. 😢
My son suffers with febrile seizures everytime he gets a fever sometimes more than once in 24hrs sometimes once in 24hrs but the thing is after the episode he gets drowsy an goes to sleep for 30 to 45min before he wakes up to his normal self
Hlo dr. Recently 6 days back my boy had febrile seizure for 1 minute. When he woke up in the morning, he was active. He suddenly got a fever, i gave him pcm but after 15 20 mintutes he had suffered from simple febrile conversion. He is now 13 months old. I have to ask is there chances of seizure for next time??.please reply.
My 10 month old son had a simple febrile seizure 2 days ago. Temp was 102 had a seizure. A guy put ice packs between his legs and on his back. Within a minute or so he started coming back out of it. Well the doctor gave him a antibiotic. 24 hours later his temperature is coming back up. We don't know what caused it. Because he is not showing symptoms of sickness other than fever. They failed to order blood culture because they were about to go on shift change. Now we have to take him to get blood culture. His blood tests came back semi normal. Some of his counts were a little high. They said it was probably because of the seizure. He also has a slightly swollen limpf node under his jaw. I'm so scared and I don't know what to do next.
You stated fever inducing Epilepsy seizures have different treatments than febrile seizures, can you explain to me what type? I Have two kids that were diagnosed with febrile seizure. Now my daughter just got Diagnosed with epilepsy
Hi doc my daughter is eighth and gets febrile seizure episodes whenever she gets fever. Do you think its normal to have it even after 5 years of age,? Or is it developing to epilepsy?
Thank you for the very informative post Doc! I had 2 febrile seizures as a child, one at 12 months and the next at 18 months. The one at 12 months wasn't induced by a fever/illness but dehydration was suspected without testing to confirm. This was back in 1989. The second episode was when I had Chickenpox and a high fever. Eventually, I had a son who had a febrile seizure when he was about one year old. I couldn't help but think of the vaccine schedule in America kind of falling in-line with both my seizures as well as my son's. I know you don't have all the information necessary, but what are your thoughts about the cause and whether it's genetic? Thanks in advance!
I had meningitis when I was a baby, the lesser version and was OK after medication and some time in the hospital, I told the doctors I had this and they said it wasn't linked. My son has had febrile convulsions since the age of 2, he is now 7, he has had around 13 the last 6, 4 of them were double siezures and the last 2 were non fever. But we are getting no where with the doctors, what is your advice? This video has opened up mine and my wives eyes! There's so much more to it, we are constantly researching about Febrile convulsions but never get anywhere.
My child's have sesure during she has cough..2 or 3 time a year. She's now 6. Her blood sugar so low.. doc what kind of illness is this. Hope to answer me. We're from phillipines. Her sesure stop when dextose has inter her body
My child is now 5 years and 11 months old and had 5 seizures in the last 6 months and all of them lasted less than 30 seconds, one of which Seizure was without fever and after the seizure came fever. Cough was accompanied by fever in all five of these episodes, MRI normal EEG Normal, In case of fever freesium is continued for the first two days of fever
Hi Doctor , I am from India, my son got seizures 4 days back which was till the time we rushed to the hospital, it was for 15-20 minutes, his oxygen level was down. He had 101degree temperature during this period. CT scan was normal, but infilrates were seen in the chest. Now MRI of brain says, few T2 hyperintensities along the poterior aspects of the bilateral lateral ventricles involving a white matter may represent terminal zones of myelimination. This is scaring me, please explain, hope there is no danger sign . My son btw had Mangitis and sepis after 2 daya od birth
Hi! Thanks for all the info. My 2 year old has had 2 "episodes" this year. One simple and then a month later complex in the sense that he had more than one (each lasting only 45 seconds) in 24 hours. He had an EEG done and it came back abnormal. What are the chances of his EEG being abnormal and this still just being febrile seizures that he will grow out of?
That's one interesting Video :) i had three febrile seizures within 1,5hours when I was 5years old. I was treated with Diazepam. I also developed epilepsy later, but I now know that it happened due to a very rare genetic mutation.
This is a torture video. I'm a retired RN. Acidosis/alkalosis, acid-base balance, I had a flash back to nursing school! Poke me in the eye with a sharp stick but don't make me do that again! Just medical humor, the video is really very good. It makes absolute sense.
My kid (2.5 years ) has had 3 febrile seizures (simple F S as per my understanding) and Doctor prescribed Clobazam (Frisium ) for him. Is it safe to give him? I got this after watching your video. Many thanks
My 20month old child had a simple febrile seizure, wich stopped after 3 minutes. Viral infection. We did blood test, EEG, doctor diagnosed epilepsy, they gave her Keppra. I am afraid that they missdiagnozed it, because while recording the EEG a nurse dropped a heavy object, at the same time my child moved her arm fastly. She was afraid of the strange unexpected noise. Can they diagnoze epilepsy after 1 EEG? Should I do some more tests? They advise MMR. Thank you

I can't judge without knowing what they mean by abnormal. Is it just small slowing which is OK or epileptic activity
Doc is there a medicine to prevent febrile seizure? If I EEG my child can seizure will not come back?
