Brilliant! What a wonderful concept Qd2 is: prophylaxis and with attacking ideas. And another wonderfully lucid explanation. Thank you, Matthew.

I’ve been continuing my investigation of the Pirc together with Dragon 3.3. It’s slow progress because Dragon keeps on digging up exciting new ideas which I can’t resist analysing! In the next couple of posts, we stop in amazement to look at a virtually unknown idea in the Austrian Attack with some subtle and venomous points! This post is accompanied by some pgns from the usual location (cloudserver.chessbase.com/MTIyMTYx/replay.html) and a post on my blog matthewsadler.me.uk

Fabulous!! Thank you so much Matthew. I love the idea! I also really admire the way you present it in a way a weak 1580 can think I am following it!!

    Great idea! Precise unorthodox play is necessary from Black! I doubt opponents will know the key idea 5.Qd2 0-0 6.Nf3 c5 7.dc Nbd7! 8.cd ed 9.Bc4 Re8 10. Ng5 d5!

Great work, really. But I find it impossible to access the pgn files on the Chessbase cloudserver link provided (and I have an accoubt). Can you put them on Li Chess or use some other method to make the pgns downloadable? Thanks so much in advance!

I don't know anything about the Pirc, but 5.Qd2 has to be one of the strangest moves I've ever seen. As your human-aided analysis shows, it looks black has to navigate a series of unnatural moves to equalize (and even though I am a career 1.d4 player, I might try out 1.d4 d6 2.e4 instead of my usual 2.Nf3 just to see if I can get this line in blitz games!).
I think the future of chess will be more and more about coming booked up, and surprising the opponent earlier than they think is possible. Great video, and definitely encouraging that we can still find virtually unknown ideas this early on!

Hey joddle, thanks!Yes the power of this 5.Qd2 idea is that it not only makes Black's natural counterplay more diffiicult (...c5) but it also has some strong positive ideas in itself (e5 gets stronger because you can meet ...de with de and the exchange of queens on d2 is much better for White). That's kind of the killer combination for any opening idea to be really worth something! Yes I was quite amazed that a position after moev 4 I have seen all my life could still have something so fresh in it! Best Wishes, Matthew

Hello In the castle nf3 d5 line after e5 ne4 nxe4 dxe4 ng5 bf5 h3 h6? seems most natural reply g4 hxg5 gxf5 Black seems more then fine cause we traded the c8 bishop for the f3 knight and the h file is closed

Oh sorry! I got the move order wrong: it's 10.Rg1 h5 11.h3. I'll correct it in the pgns! Best Wishes, Matthew

Back in the day people used to play a3 with the idea of ruling out qa5, no one went as far as considering Qd2 though

Great work again!! Thanks for those two super awesome pgn games (pure masterpieces).
Hey Matthew, 1st i have a special request. You see today, while reading a really good book (The art of attacking chess) i came across one of your games (which must be one of your most memorable game for sure too), Zagorskis - Sadler, Elista Ol, 1998. It would be great if you could make a video on that specific game.
Secondly, you see i was creating my own engines games but i was always using the Lichess engine for that. However, last week while reading one of your last blog i discovered the Chess Gui Nibbler (in fact i didn't knew what was the signification of GUI). So since i have two p.c. i can now create better engines game with more engines.
Now I would like to know which GUI do you use for your games?
So far I've tried Arena (which doesn't work well on one of my PCs - proclaiming illegal moves - at times), I've also tried Tarrasch (which I really like because it emits a sound after an engine move). I also really like Nibbler due to the self-play option and the facility to transfer the pgn to CB clipboard (i would like to have the variation too ... but hey). I also like the fact that Nibbler offer the option to choose amongs the first four options of the engine.
    Thanks for your time Matthew.

Hey Marc, oh yes that Zagorskis game is funny ☺ I might well do a video on it sometime... I have the weirdest feeling that I've done some stuff on it recently but I can't think where! 😂
Ah yes Nibbler is really nice - you get a lot of other information you don't see anywhere else!
Yes Arena I had some problems with too if I remeber correctly. Tarrasch is nice, I use Fritz a lot, HIARCS Explorer, SCID (free) aned CuteChess as well (works best on Linux). Lots of stuff out there which basically all works! Best Wishes, Matthew
