  • The egg shaker is awesome! If you practise a little and pay close attention to how you can change the sound you can make great tricks with these toys. Check out how to create a roll effect similar to soft ghost taps on a snare drum and how to make a natural filter effect with your hands. Thanks for watching! More videos on music production with hardware instruments can be found on my channel. Have a great day everyone! :)

    It's so amazing to see how one can give a month's worth of perc lessons in two minutes, without saying a word, just by very concise demonstration. Thank you sir, you have been more help here than you know. Please keep up the good work.

      No shit.. Too many people on these tutorials talk waaaaaayyyy toooo much. All that explanation is so unnecessary, just like people who over explain a joke, worrying that people won't get the punchline.

    This reminds me of the time in high school when I was in the choir and they gave me a cabassa to play during some Christmas songs.
    I pulled so many badass cabassa manoeuvres that I'm surprised it wasn't my calling in life.

    FABULOUS. Got any tips of selecting shakers to purchase?

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift  Год назад +1

      Thank you! I haven't tried too many of these but I do own some different ones, they were all very cheap (€ 1,- each or so...). They all sound quite different from eachother.
      The loudest one I have is by a company called Justin. It's yellow (don't know if that means anything) but is also a bit lighter and harder to control when playing it. I think I usually prefer the heavier ones.
      I also have a shaker by a company called Meinl. It is not an egg shaker though, it looks almost like a small drum with skin strapped over a metallic body. It sounds good but totally different again. It's s bit of an apples to oranges comparison though... You can make other sounds with it and it's also rather loud but I don't play it much because you cannot do this triplet trick with it...
      In my experience these egg shaped shakers are better to play than all other shapes, even better than some of the more expensive ones.
      I would recommend buying a small set of different egg shakers and see how they differ in sound and usability.
      Thanks for the nice comment!😊

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift  4 года назад

      For this video I simply used the built in mics from the Zoom Q3HD camera I had back then. For some reason it sounds weird when the signal is recorded really hot though. It's better when you leave lots of headroom. And yes, placing the mic above is a good idea.

      shmuel cyprys It's really just a playing technique and it works with any egg shaker but it's a little easier with the heavier ones that are not so loud in tone, they are just a little easier to control.

    How to program this pattern on drum machine?

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift  Год назад

      I've been thinking about this quite a bit... You would definitely need a triplet scale resolution with 24 steps per measure just for these faster "shuffle notes'. The problem is you may need a "regular" 16 steps resolution with a bit of swing for the other notes and not any drummachine can use different resolution scales within the same pattern. You could do it on one of the older Roland MC boxes (303, 307, 505, 909), on a Yamaha QY or on an Akai MPC for example. Thanks for the question!

    • @basstradamus1
      @basstradamus1 Год назад

      @@LousyFacelift I'll give a try with one of my Roland boxes. I think key will be to take a sound and have different attack and releases, i guess 3 versions of the same sample with right envs and volume.

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift  Год назад

      I just programmed the pattern on my MC-505 and I'm quite happy with the result but it's not so easy to explain. As I said before it's a combination of sixteenths notes and sixteenths triplets (or twentyfourths) notes. Also you need to program a light swing setting on the sixteenths which is a bit special in the 505. What Roland box do you use?
