- I tow my boat to southern Brittany for a cruise in company with a group of other dinghies. We sail along the coast and out to the Îles de Glénan, camping on board each night.

AVEL DRO
Do you want a boat like mine?
Avel Dro is an Ilur designed by François Vivier, and built of clinker plywood by Les Charpentiers Reunis of Cancale in 1994, which I bought in France and imported into the UK. The design is based closely on the traditional inshore fishing boats of Brittany in the early years of the twentieth century, hence her single boom-less lugsail rig and lack of a mainsheet horse, (sometimes controversial among my viewers). Although rare in Britain, Ilurs are relatively common in France. The name Avel Dro is Breton, and basically means a whirlwind.
Length 4.44 m
Sail area 12.2 m²
Beam 1.70 m
Draught 0.25 / 0.86 m
Design category C3

Similar dinghies can often be found for sale on the website of the French magazine Le Chasse-Marée:

Or try Le Bon Coin, (where you can buy anything in France):

(Sad note about the effect of post-Brexit trade rules, as introduced on 1 Jan 2021. These mean that Great Britain (but not Northern Ireland) residents who buy a boat in France, or elsewhere in the EU, with the intention of importing it into the UK, will have to pay VAT and other duties on the import. Fortunately there are more and more Ilurs being built in the UK).

I have never sailed. Yet, here I am, watching, and enjoying, a video about dinghy sailing.
I’m just half thru it, but this is my favorite video of yours already. Friends and adventures. I love the music.
Love this video and just realised that your commentary reminds me of Noggin the Nog (apologies to those under 60) - very calming.
Good connection Phil.
Postgate and Firmin’s Small films were a big part of my childhood.🙂
Noggin is a nice word 😂
Roger, Only one word describes your work - Superb.
living the dream - well done Roger. Lovely video as always
One of, if not your best video yet, Roger!
It's no good I'll have to get a boat and do a bit of sailing again.
What a great escape even sat here watching you on youtube from the reality and hustle and bustle and madness that is going on in the world, loved the music also by the way, thank you for sharing your trips.
Love the sailing, love the music, love the pace. Hard to believe that weather was July! Also love seeing the other boats. All those timeworn skills revitalized! Somehow I think the little coves and harbors, stone seawalls and village buildings are pleased to have your dinghies sailing into port again.
Amazing Roger and as a life long sailor myself I learn so much, cheers mate!!!
Glad I’m not the only one who remembers (and likes) the original Swallows&Amazons film
Nice long trip with those cheerful lunch'ers comrades.
Wahey, breakfast with another fine video from Roger.
always look forward to your videos, this was another great one!
Hi Roger, we absolutely love your videos. My wife and I watch spellbound at your beautifully crafted films. You are an inspiration in so many ways.
I love these ships they are ships , I am an explorer at heart and would love to explore the world with something so complicated but simple wow love it ,
Joy to the world !
Roger just put out a new video !!
Marvellous sailing Roger. Once again you have kept my spirits afloat.
It’s the bonding moments that keep our friends stay forever 💖💖
I keep watching your older videos. Love the different harbors and dinghy diversity. Keep them coming. Love to you and Thanks!
An absolute masterpiece!
I live in British Columbia and between the heat wave and the fires we are roasting. Id love some southern Brittany weather right now. Take care
I went sailing to Le Glennan with family friends 56 years ago in a 420 sailing boat.. It’s changed a bit.
Great vid MrB, thanks for all the relaxing entertainment. Nice peaceful landing at the end there too, good skills. Cheers from NZ.
Every time I watch your videos, i reach out and try to pull a rope to hold the steering wheel for a while, to wet my hand at sea, i think many like me will imagine the same thing, it's a big deal to carry so many people every time you go somewhere in such a small boat. Carry on Roger to (we) keep on dreaming that one day, some day...
Many memories of Pouldohan and Le Glennan. Thank you.
Magnifique !
I am not a sailor by any stretch but i live in a sailing community. This type of sailing appeals to me more than any other. Very nice footage.
What fabulous sailing. In my mind I was there for every tack. Thank you Roger, for allowing me to travel (if only in the mind's eye) with you.
Wonderful. Thanks for ‘taking us with you’.
I love to follow your sailing. Nice video good comments and good music too. :)
Just as I have picked up the book The New Glénans Sailing Manual! A gorgeous film and great to put the Glénans islands on the map. Thanks very much!
Thank you. ❤ I'm a liveaboard on a tophat 25 and videos like these make me want to downsize again.
Morning coffee and sailing with Rodger Barnes not a bad way to start out the day. Such a simple way of sailing about. Love your videos looking forward to seeing more.
Much peace and love from northeast Texas 🤠
You handle your boat like a 10 year old boy on his bike - in complete oneness. Thanks for a lovely trip.
One of your best videos Roger
Roger you really work wonders in our souls !
It's à good journaý !good job Roger.
Thank you. Stress level of every day modern life raised by five minutes of world news this morning and then lowered back completely in a little under one half hour by this film. I think tomorrow no news and a re-watch of this video.
Francois Vivier club by the look of it !
Thank you Roger, for another splendid video.
2 in one month, yay! Thank you. Although "Leave the past behind" is easier said than done right now, a trip into your present is always a welcome respite.
Made the video passage with you for the second time and it was as enjoyable and relaxing as the first. If you don't object, I may do it again (and again). Thank you so much for dinghy cruising and showing the joys of the smaller boats where my heart has always been.
You’re welcome!
Thank you Roger, a sweet and gentle little video.
Much appreciated, Barnacle Bern, SY Cadbri. 👍😎
"If we want to taste your whiskey, it's better you're not too far away."
Wise words from a man who knows how to live.
I needed that. Locked down in Sydney, slowly going stir crazy. Thank you, Roger.
I know, Tyler - I have family and sailing pals in Sydney. It's very tough for you all at the moment.
Hallo Roger i love your flogs wel done i keep folowe you
Thanks Roger, totally enjoyed your video. Love France from a new perspective, and very well filmed. You are getting even better with little titbits that make me smile and happy.
Once again thank you for a fine film of calm, enjoyable armchair sailing! Having seen the Hobie I should not have sold mine last year. It could do as an exploration vessel...
I guess what is driving you and the other lads are the passion and cameraderie of small boat sailing. One micro-adventure after another. Very insipring.
Another lovely film Roger,
Thank you 👍.
Sailing da 🌞 sun set waters to a dream like place ,' Rrrr..... Captain dingy , this where every sailers hart mind an sole finds the wonder's of nature, an atmospheric colour's so inlightning, thanks
Thank you Roger for this video , a great souvenir for us !
Great cinematography! Thank you for another beautiful video.
Another awesome adventure! Thanks, Roger. All that sailing in the company of fellow sailors. What a joy and a sense of fulfilment.
Glad I'm not the only one that forgets the centerboard occasionally. LOL
try launching with the board down.
Yep, regularly.
We all know that a centre-board is an impromptu depth gauge, when required. 😁
Absolutely delightful, thanks for sharing with us!
Another great adventure. Thanks for sharing Roger!
Another superb video, thanks for all that you do Roger! A breath of fresh air for us all.
Such a lovely style and pace to your videos. They are a treat. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for another great video, Roger! They always make me feel like I'm there. It's something that happens in your style of shooting video, it just makes it all the more enjoyable.
Love your contributions Roger!

Beautifully relaxing as ever. Thank you Roger. As ever making the blue water look so inviting. 🙏🌞

Brisbane Australia
That's the dream of dinghy cruising. Landfall in a tiny bay in green landscapes. Want that... This year.
To me the best Creperie ever was in Lampaul-Guimilliau. Seems to be closed or moved, probably for Covid reason.
Surprising low waves out on the ocean at this wind. Has there been an calm just before?
Genial video, Rogers, como siempre. Gracias.
Perfect viewing on a summer's evening. Thanks Roger for another fantastic video. Hope life is good for you in France.
Just watched it again , it's one to lift your spirits. Always enjoy your adventures Roger, from long away Australia.
Thanks Roger. Another inspiring video.
Thank you Rodger, just found your channel. Ive a treat in store watching your adventures.
Roger, I am thoroughly enjoying your videos. Very entertaining and informative at the same time. Keep up the good work! Thank you!
Wonderful! I just started some sailing classes this year. I get to get out on the water now too. What a feeling!
Amazing opening. Perfect music choice. Thanks for the video.
Hi Roger. Phil from Oregon U.S.A. love your videos. You do a great job. Your a true sailor braving the open elements as you and your friends do. No motor makes watching very interesting. Love seeing France and all the places I never will otherwise. God speed, happy safe winds. Au revoir
I'm so impressed with your sailing skills, not the least of which are of your intra-marina dodgings... Thanks for taking us along!
Thank you very much, Roger. I learn something about the standing lug in every one of your videos. Still working on a boom for my 12' lugger and curious to learn about the differences.
Fabulous…….real escapism! Your best video to date. Looking forward to the next one.
Came across your videos by chance and recognised a number of your cruising areas from past holidays. Very inspirational for me as a 'retired' sailer and has brought about a desire to complete a couple of unfinished projects.
Idyllic but not easy work. Great slow speed seamanship. Loved the song.
Lovely film Roger, thanks. The subtitles were very welcome too. Expert arrival on the slipway as well 👍
BEST ONE YET ROGER ,THANK YOU
Roger - this was an absolute belter of a video! Really made me jealous of your sailing grounds.
I'm always impressed by the capability of your boat - and the confidence you exhibit sailing her.
Thanks for another great video.
A very relaxing watch. Thanks.
Put your waterproofs on and a couple reefs in your sail. All in all you looked like you had a good time. I think sailing feeds your soul, Roger. Thank you for sharing. It was a pleasure to see the different boats and rigs, really sailing, rather than just on a flat page in a book. Some beautiful boats out there with you. Thanks again. Texas
Back again, Roger. I have missed you. Retired again X2, on a little river/big creek in the foothills of the Tennessee side of the Appalachians. Thanks again, from East Tennessee
Another great adventure Rodger thanks for sharing
Beautiful trip, great sailing footage. I enjoyed your explanations and description using charts of the areas you sailed. Also, the variety of boats was good to see, thanks for identifying them in the comments.
Thumbs up to the music also, Cheers
Hi Roger, I enjoy you videos quite a bit. I live in the US, but visit you side from time to time. I hope some day to meet you in person, and sail with you and your friends. I would enjoy that immensely. Thank you again.
Wonderful Roger. And the music was lovely. Thank You .......
A very good film. Thoroughly enjoyable account of a great trip.
Magical stuff, I recently sailed south Brittany on my way to the Mediterranean in a Sadler 34 drawing 1.5 metres so I couldn’t do as much as you but you’ve certainly opened my eyes as to what is actually possible, thanks so much , remarkable.
A lovely film; delightful to watch. Thank you for documenting your inspirational adventures so beautifully. I shall escape back to civilisation one day...soon!
Maravillosas imágenes ! Te felicito Roger desde Argentina!
Just absolutely wonderful. Thank you!!!!
Thank you Roger for video. From Turkey hi. Your boat is excellent...
Gosh; your approach to the slipway at the end was a tutorial. Now subscribed, and bought the book. Having built a pair of trad wooden luggers on a course in Falmouth, a few years ago, I have fallen for the simplicity of the rig, and being older and less flexible, I further appreciate a boomless rig. You've rekindled my interest in small(ish) boat sailing, so; thank you.
