A great nostalgic moment ! I remember those days, watching the RAC rally ,the best times. Sad day , the demise of the group B rally cars. Kudos to Martin for preserving this car, and for staying cool with you screaming down his ear, and waving your arms about insanely!!!!
Takes me right back to Lydden rallycross circuit 1986 watching Will Gollop sling it round like a loony... Great memories of one of my all time favourite cars, cheers!
The car club I was in during 85/86 was asked if we could Marshall some local stages in Wales as Tony Pond and Rob Arther were testing the MG 6r4. You could hear the car coming well before you saw it. It was an incredible time. When Tony arrived at our control, we had a quick chat with both crew. Tony was full up with the flu, but when asked about how it was affecting his driving, he said as soon as the clutch dropped, the adrenalin kicked in and just drove as he usually did!! Flat out. Great guys to meet 👍😎
Similar story, during the 1985 Lombard RAC Rally. Not long a member of my motor club (8 months) and we were asked to marshal Stang forest (stage before Hamsterly). As I was carrying on into the rally with some lads, I got to marshal arrivals. Every grp B coming in was amazing to stand beside (like the waste gate ports on the Lancia Delts S4 or the marshal warmers as we nick named them) but the Metro even more so.Tony, Rob and Malcolm (can't remember Malcolm's nav) were fairly chatty whilst getting ready, unlike the rest of the foreign drivers. The feeling stood next to the ticking over Metro was felt through the body. One day I'll get a ride in one
Watched these leave and arrive @Bath during the SW stage of the Lombard RAC rally up until they stopped in 86. Tony Pond brought his to our school and ripped up the playground as a special treat and a petrolhead was born in me forever!!
Thanks Pete, that was epic. As a very old rally driver (late 1960s / early 1970s) I was long retired by the Group B era but that had my feet twitching like a goodun. I wonder if I still have it in me......
Great vid Pete, I have great memories of that very car, working late nights bringing it out of hibernation and getting it on the button before it was sold to its current owner about 5 years ago. It is a privilege to work on such cars and to see them being enjoyed properly, gathering dust the exciting way!
Definitely my all time favourite of the incredible Group B race cars. The 6R4 looks absolutely insane, sounds like a supercar (which is appropriate with the engine ending up in the XJ220!) and is frighteningly rapid!!! Awesome car!!!
Totally agree. All the group B cars were fantastic, but the 6R4 holds a special place in my memory. The noise of that V6 wailing through a cold Welsh forest is unforgettable.
What a machine ...the scream of the straight cut gearbox is just fantastic! No wonder Group B ended when manufacturers were putting this sort of stuff into cars like a metro! Absolute legend Martin - have stayed at the Hotel de France - real enthusiasts hotel and would recommend! Thanks for taking us along Pete

He called his the ratmobile as it was pink and white!!!! What a machine, the noise, the ride the adrenaline rush, just amazing. Definitely my favourite rally car of all time. Nice one ☝️
Wow, echoing an earlier comment, your best vlog yet. What an experience !!. Amazing to see the drivers view of the rally course, especially in something as iconic as a 6R4. Back in the day group B was as big as formula 1 and the cars were nuts. I never got to see them back in the day, so the rally stage at Goodwood is my chance to see the 6R4s, RS200s, Lancias etc in action.

I went to the British motor museum this weekend Pete for the Ford festival, anyway they have got a 6R4 in the museum and I completely share your excitement for this Metro. Awesome group B machine.
I used to watch this very car testing around the industrial estate as I was in comp school around 20 year ago, good to see the old girl cuz of this my first car had to be a metro gti with a vvc lump loved it smashed some serious cars with that.
Amazing video. 6R4 is a true legend. Thank you for taking us onboard. What a fantastic chap! did not realise he owned Hotel de France! Went there during the last Le Mans Classic. looking forward to going next year too!

I went to a private test session of Metro 6R4's recently. A guy who was testing his 6R4 brought a 100 litre fuel tank with him. I said to him that's lot of fuel for a test session. He replied "Not really it uses 1 litre per mile when driven like this, so I might get a 100 miles out of it!"
I was once driven round a special woodland rally stage in Wales, by a professional driver, at night ... It was absolutely terrifying/amazing! just missing trees by inches at 100mph. It's difficult to convey on video the feeling of driving on a knife-edge of control.

Great stuff Peter, brings back many memories for me in my boyhood, when the RAC Rally used to come through my part of the South West. Those were the days !
Welsh Rally Clocaenog Forest 1985 a 6R4 went off and a friend and I helped lift it back onto the fire road. Then it wouldn't start so we pushed it for a bump start. It felt as if it weighed 5 tons. Then I remembered that it had three locked diffs. The driveline friction was incredible. You must need 400 bhp just to turn the transmission!
The Golden Wonder 6R4 was owned and driven by Ken Wood in the Scottish Rally championship back in the 1980's. The original registration number was 261 GWC (for Golden Wonder Crisps) Don't know if this is the same car. BTW - cheese n onion are the best ❤
Amazing mate!!! I was there at goodwood on Saturday. It was so hot, i can't believe u had to wear all that gear! 😅 Well worth it though for a ride in that! Thanks for sharing 👍
Yes correct a 90 degree v6 (ilo 60 or 120 degree) with shared big end pins (so no flying webs normal to 60 deg v6 cranks), so I believe has uneven firing pulses.
An old school mate of mine picked up a 6R4 last year from Ireland. Absolutely awesome looking thing. Also Peter Lloyd had a factory not to far from where I live with basically everything you needed for your car.....
The best sounding v6 of all time, shame this car didn't have a longer career, it had huge potential in those anything goes group b days, glad to see that enthusiasts are still campaigning them.
This 6R4 was not even driven at a fraction of full potential and yet it still gives goose-bumps & cheerful screaming to the passenger bloke..🙂 imagine same stage in full-rain and pedal to the floor.. madness.. here is the 6R4 owned & driven by Colin McRae that was restored but detuned by the specialists who restore it from alarming 13.000rpm to 9500 rpm it still sounds pretty epic.. ruclips.net/video/pa3yEQGEV5w/видео.html
Bucket list ticking Congratulations No jealousy here.. dam The concentration on the drivers face was palpable.. Awesome Left me grinning from ear to ear
Absolutely fabulous.........yes I remember Tony Pond in 'his' Metro 6R4 during the BBC RAC Rally report, introduced by a very young looking J. Clarkson. Those were the days!!!!
Back in the 80s I worked for a well known Ferrari dealer in Surrey I used to pick allsorts of cars from all over the country and drive them back to base I picked up one of these 6R4s This video brought it all back to me the transmission noise I thought I would open it up just to see what it had .......and the throttle stuck open ! I s**t myself I managed to take it out of gear and stop it and the throttle unstuck itself Needless to say I took it really slow back for the rest of my journey scared it might happen again if I booted it
I went this year. The Rally stage had hardly any people up there. I went up there and had a good look round all the cars and watched in the Forest for a couple of hours. Loved it.
I had blue one that was put into storage for 20 years and when I opened up the garage to take it for a spin all that was found of it was a little pile of rust in the middle of the garage floor. Best little 1.0 litre I’ve ever driven. 😃
Great vid, and what a lovely bloke. I had a mate down there racing as well, group 4 renault alpine a110 also has Hannu mikkolas mk 1 ford escort bda paris dakar car
Really cool. It reminded me of James May doing 200mph+ in a Veyron and saying "When I had to slow down, I was still doing 70mph, but it felt slow enough to step out". That thing is brutal. You can see how hard he's working the wheel just to keep it going vaguely straight :)
The group b cars were such emotive, raw and crazy cars.....the noise ❤ , the 6R4 and Quattro were my favourites. For wonderful noise it has to be the 6R4, even better than the warbling Audi ! Great video 👍

An old school mate of mine picked up a 6R4 last year from Ireland. Absolutely awesome looking thing. Also Peter Lloyd had a factory not to far from where I live with basically everything you needed for your car.....
Cool 👍
The best sounding v6 of all time, shame this car didn't have a longer career, it had huge potential in those anything goes group b days, glad to see that enthusiasts are still campaigning them.
This 6R4 was not even driven at a fraction of full potential and yet it still gives goose-bumps & cheerful screaming to the passenger bloke..🙂
imagine same stage in full-rain and pedal to the floor.. madness.. here is the 6R4 owned & driven by Colin McRae that was restored but detuned by the specialists who restore it from alarming 13.000rpm to 9500 rpm it still sounds pretty epic.. ruclips.net/video/pa3yEQGEV5w/видео.html
Bucket list ticking
Congratulations
No jealousy here.. dam
The concentration on the drivers face was palpable.. Awesome
Left me grinning from ear to ear
That is great to hear Paul 👍
Love that car it was somerhing speciell when it wery on a rally the sound is crazy nice
Fantastic!! I'll be sharing this video with a couple friends. Thanks!!
Please do. That would be fantastic 👍
I remember will gollops 6r4 back in the 90’s phenomenal speed
Oh yes 👍
Absolutely fabulous.........yes I remember Tony Pond in 'his' Metro 6R4 during the BBC RAC Rally report, introduced by a very young looking J. Clarkson. Those were the days!!!!
They were indeed 👏
So glad they kept the Metro gearbox whine. Love that sound
lol
Lol
So jealous, wow wot an experience. Remember these in my teens. When Collin drove. Wow. Loved this class.
It was a very special moment for me that’s for sure 🙏🏻
It is Tony Pond's 6R4 in the museum Pete :-) and what a bloke, towing at 95mph in a blower how cool.
Too cool for school 😜
Back in the 80s I worked for a well known Ferrari dealer in Surrey I used to pick allsorts of cars from all over the country and drive them back to base I picked up one of these 6R4s This video brought it all back to me the transmission noise I thought I would open it up just to see what it had .......and the throttle stuck open ! I s**t myself I managed to take it out of gear and stop it and the throttle unstuck itself Needless to say I took it really slow back for the rest of my journey scared it might happen again if I booted it
OMG !!! I bet you kept that to yourself 😂
I used to like the Metro GTI in racing green.God how old mate 😂 Great stuff this is what it is all about 😍🏎💨
I think this body type is maybe more like the MG Metro Turbo???...which is even older. :D
I love these cars. Been a favourite of mine for years. I wanted a few at Grisedale forest in 1992
Hi , my god that car sounds brilliant.
Thanks
Cheers Andrew 👍
Amazing, wish more people would go to the rally. Your are right, True enthusiasts are the only ones up there. Amazing
It’s mega up there 👍
If I get invited next year then you are welcome to join me in a WRC Escort Cosworth!
I went this year. The Rally stage had hardly any people up there. I went up there and had a good look round all the cars and watched in the Forest for a couple of hours. Loved it.
I SAW A ROAD LEGAL FORD RS200 THE OTHER WEEK DRIVING WHERE I LIVE IN ESSEX.
There are quite a few copies/kit RS200 but still always great to see them 👍
I had blue one that was put into storage for 20 years and when I opened up the garage to take it for a spin all that was found of it was a little pile of rust in the middle of the garage floor. Best little 1.0 litre I’ve ever driven. 😃
Great vid, and what a lovely bloke. I had a mate down there racing as well, group 4 renault alpine a110 also has Hannu mikkolas mk 1 ford escort bda paris dakar car
Nice 👍
I think you mean London Mexico or Safari Rally car. Mikkola, if i recall correctly, never drove Paris Dakar in any car much less a MK1 Escort.
@@Lucky7Wolfin Yep, my mistake, spot on.
I remember that car when I was younger loved it
Really cool. It reminded me of James May doing 200mph+ in a Veyron and saying "When I had to slow down, I was still doing 70mph, but it felt slow enough to step out". That thing is brutal. You can see how hard he's working the wheel just to keep it going vaguely straight :)
Like riding a rocket 😂
Without a doubt the greatest Group B rally engine noise ever!!
Oh yes !
I watched them in action in the 80s ,,, memory’s
Also I live nr a place were they worked on the trim on the rs200 ,,used to see them regular driving along, as well as the tickford capri ,
The group b cars were such emotive, raw and crazy cars.....the noise ❤ , the 6R4 and Quattro were my favourites. For wonderful noise it has to be the 6R4, even better than the warbling Audi ! Great video 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
