    Problems with book 2,
    I think what makes me the most upset with it is the potential it had. The slow pacing in the first half really began the hate. On paper season 2 should be great, exploring the origins of the avatar and bending, going to the spirit world, and the introduction of the goat varrick. However, I think they took too many chances in the ending. The final battle was cheesy, and didnt feel like it belonged in the avatar universe. Another thing is the villain. I personally would have made it so that unalaq didnt have intentions to put the world into 10000 years of darkness, because that just seems completely unrealistic and there seems to be no motive. It would have been so much better if they made it so that unalaq was being tricked by vatuu, and he wouldnt know what he was really doing by releasing vatuu. Possibly throw in a little redemption for him. Also dont like that she lost all the previous avatars.

      I agree with everything except your opinion on the loss of the past lives. I thought it was a great choice to reset the cycle. Aang's problems were pretty much completely solved by talking to his past lives. (Unless he disagreed with their advice) It sucks because haters say...
      - "Korra gets given everything by her past lives, she's weak."
      - "I hate Korra because she lost her past lives."
      Like, *whAt!?*

      I agree. That’s exactly what I was thinking, and would have been a better story. Making Unalaq into a sympathetic character. I could give it or take it with Korra losing the past avatars.

    • @dimitrihalfking7126
      @dimitrihalfking7126 4 месяца назад

      @@PxndaCakes no it wasnt a great choice. Korra struggled alot spiritually in s1-s2. Idk why they had her "spiritually connect with herself" in s1 when she was still on this struggle. They should have kept it as short visions progressing over time. Its like Tenzin said the avatars have the hardest time learning what is completely opposite to them. Her spiritual trouble should have been longer. Even Aang had some struggle but only to unlock the avatar state, which he barely used. Mean while Korra spams the avatar state and its still somehow weak.
      There is alot of problems tbh

  • @deiondre0

    Season 2 had a lot of good points, but also some really bad points. First of all, the Spirit World was AMAZING, even more amazing than it was in ATLA. Then there's Varrick, who is such an interesting character especially in the next seasons. Beginnings is one of my favorite multi-part episodes in the entire Avatar series next to Day of Black Sun and Sozin's Comet.
    My biggest negatives around this series center around Korra Mako and Bolin, especially Mako and Bolin. Their personalities regressed so much where Mako doesnt add anything to the story other than being the "teen heartbreaker". Sure he was working on Varrick's plot but that turned out to be meaningless since absolutely nobody listened to him, which brings me to Bolin. Not only did he become extremely shallow, but he lost a lot of my respect for not listening to Mako about Varrick, and he stayed being shallow and petty even after Mako was thrown in jail. Idk maybe its because I have a brother but theres a certain point where the jokes have to stop and you gotta stick by family, but Bolin seemed not to care that his ONLY FAMILY was gonna spend a lot of time behind bars and that pissed me off.
    My only issue with Korra was that she was rules by emotions until she met Wan but thats fine since it eventually stopped. Losing the connection to previous Avatars sucked but I got over it a while ago

      The spirirt world and spirirts in general in Kora was NOT better than ATLA just.... no. Like... I don't even need to explain why

    • @christianthompson2768
      @christianthompson2768 4 года назад +1

      Honestly, I was totally fine with Korra acting because of her emotions. There can be some benefit to doing so, but for much of this season it is to her and others' detriment. It's a character flaw, but not one that makes her pointless, but one that invokes conflict and more importantly, one that she grows out of as the series goes on. Even at the end of this season, you see her thinking more and less brashly going into things. These characteristic of her being headstrong and acting off her emotions may annoy people, but it provides her with a really interesting arc.
      Mako and Bolin tho? Definitely agree.

    And like a fool, even after rewatches, I still can't like Book 2 of LOK. HOWEVER yes, (besides the Wan episodes), I did feel a lot for the Aang and Tenzin scene. That got me and it wasn't just because Aang showed up. It was because I think that's what a lot of people need to hear in real life.

  • @TheRoomforImprovement
    @TheRoomforImprovement 4 года назад +2

    While I never disliked Unalaq, I had an idea to make him a bit more interesting. Make his start out as seemingly nice and mellow, especially compared to Tenzin and Tonraq (at the time). And to make him a better counter to Korra, I’d make one change from season 1: don’t restore Korras bending yet. She learns that the only way to do that is to get in touch with her spiritual side, something she has yet to do. So When she sees her “spiritually enlightened” uncle offer to help her, she jumps at the opportunity, eager to return to her prime. The difference in them is that as korra regains her bending, she becomes more spiritual while Unalaq, after meeting Vaatu earlier, doubles down and becomes the avatar equivalent of Frollo, a religious zealot that forces his will in the name of his faith. Also, When Vaatu fuses with him, make it clear that he’s being possessed, which would be a fitting punishment. Also, don’t have him arrange Tonraq’s exile in the north. Make it an isolated incident he uses as an excuse to discredit his brother.
    Thoughts?

    I’m glad that you enjoyed season two, I agree that it wasn’t as well done because of few reasons; unlike ATLA korra was only given one season, and afterwards when nick saw how much people liked it they were able to give another season but only one again to wrap up the story in only two seasons. The creators actually talked about how rushed everything felt in season two and how hard it was to appeal to Nickelodeon. That’s why season two felt very detached and off. Sadly because of sexism, nick didn’t want korra because she was a female lead and they thought that boys wouldn’t want to watch a female led show. Nickelodeon basically sabotaged LOK from the beginning, which is really upsetting, however it’s amazing how the writers were still able to come back with their imagination, especially from season 3 to 4 because those are one of my favorite seasons ever. I actually love korra more because of how mature they made it be, they added little details that mostly matured people would understand, and added themes that are so amazing and beautiful to follow. Especially what they did with korra, her character growth throughout the seasons are amazing, and I bet you will enjoy it. To wrap this all up, I hope you enjoy the most action packed season aka. Season 3. Enjoy 😊

    • @ReelJames

      Awe, that is upsetting. I noticed that the episodes felt rushed at the end of Book 1, too, which I then learned was because Nick didn't give them a timetable for Book 2 and beyond. I'm so excited for the next season now that I know it's action-packed! Thank you for your love and support!

    I’m really conflicted on Book 2. On one hand, I love the stuff with Tenzin’s family, the dazzling animation, the amazing action in the second half, the Beginnings Episodes, Varrick, Bolin’s still funny at times and the idea to focus on Spirits is amazing and leads to some creative designs and ideas. But that first half (episodes 5-8 especially) really hurt the season so much in terms of pacing and episodes 5 and 6 had so much unnecessary filler. Also, I kind of wish we could’ve seen Korra try to get her memory back herself and the ending is just a generic, albeit visually spectacular, apocalyptic situatiom that also felt a bit too easy once Korra became a blue giant. It’s a shame. Season 2 had the opportunity to be a masterpiece

    I rewatched Korra with my sister recently, just finished the last episode this morning, and when we were starting season 2, I kept putting it off because of the stigma I'd developed hearing complaints about it, and having had my own issues when I first watched. That being said, I enjoyed rewatching season 2. You mentioned a lot of my main issues, the writing being subpar is basically at the center of it. I know you like the second half a lot, but most of my issues stem from there, during the last few episodes, we saw a lot of our team trying things, and failing again and again. Korra and Jinora travel to the spirit world and get lost, that gets resolved, but then Jinora is kidnapped, and the spirit portal was opened. They try to close the portals but fail. They try to stop Unulaq from combining with Vaatu and fail. Korra tries to fight UnaVaatu, and she loses her Avatar spirit. I just felt it was a chain of events that didn't go anywhere. And with all the dire, world-ending stuff with Vaatu, any time they cut to Tenzin and his crew looking for Jinora and cracking jokes was distracting. It didn't feel important, although I care for Jinora, there's so much more going on that Tenzin should've been there for. At no point during any of those failed attempts did they really learn anything, or change the playing field in any meaningful way, if anything they keep digging the hole deeper, things keep backfiring. Until it didn't, and everything was better. These things stood out to me during the second watch. I didn't like all the changes to Avatar lore either, but I feel those are mostly nitpicks.

    I am a huge fan of Avatar, since I basically grew up/am growing up with it. And although ATLA will always have a special places in my heart, Korra is really cool and innovative. Personally book 2 is just... Mah. I love that they gave us a deeper view into Korra, Jinora, Bumi, Kya, Tenzin, but... That energy bending? The whole ancestry of the avatar being lost, although the avatar and its past life were the light which can never be destroyed? That was way to far. I don’t even care about the whole love triangle thing: romance in avatar was always... lacking. But they built up this whole backstory for the avatar just to destroy it a few episodes later, it just seems cheap and leaves a bad taste... Like the spirit approach though, could have been something really cool. The spiritual side of the world of Avatar was always kind of mysterious... Just sad, honestly...

      @@ReelJames Yeah. I wouldn’t say it is a dumpster fire 🔥 or a full on bad season like some people say, but it was the clear bottom of the barrel for Avatar standards due to all those really bad moments throughout. It was not the writers’ faults, it was Nickelodeon who did everything so wrong. The Avatar seasons were around 20 episodes long, but I was so enthralled with the story that they flew by, and this season was like 14 episodes and besides the Beginnings episodes, everything else was so sluggish and boring for me.

    So I had mentioned not likening the spirit half of the second season and can fully talk about it freely. The first half in my opinion while flawed had a much more compelling story with the civil war, the war propaganda that Varrick is using and even the self sabotage he uses on Asami's ships all make for an interesting political side we don't often see in typical animation. Unaloq is a very one dimensional villain that seems bad from the beginning and really shouldn't have ever been trusted over characters that clearly care about Korra. I also like the gutsy move to break the Avatar cycle and erase the past Avatars that was really cool and forces Korra to find new solutions without the aid of past Avatars wisdom. And of course Jinora is awesome being an amazing character nothing more to say about her. However the Vatoo/Ravva story I think still isn't very compelling boiling things down to a simple good vs bad mentality I feel cheapens the depth that can exist in this show. The dark Avatar is also a weird turn that again makes Unaloq seem down right stupid he wants to bring balance with spirits by destroying mankind? How is this balance? It doesn't make sense to me. Anyway I love the reactions and reviews can't wait for book 3! Which I mostly enjoy except for the ideology behind the antagonist but we can talk about that when we get there! Keep up the great work!

    I know I'm late, but I'm coming fresh from watching this season for the first time. It is true that it tends towards a fantastical ex-machina style, but that's not necessarily bad. It's the Book of Spirits, obviously it'll be very different from the down to earth feel of TLA (which in itself had its own fantastical ex-machina moments too). I think it's just a matter of execution. It was definitely rushed and severing itself from Aang and the past Avatars (kind of like the sequel trilogy of Star Wars) might not sit well with everyone, but I would be lying if I didn't have moments that made me shed a tear because character development in this season, especially for Aang's family, was on point. I'm excited to see what the creators did for the next two seasons.

    I've gotta agree! In all honesty, Korra in general was a fine series! Lot of fun, great character, and definitely some flaws here and there. But definitely not worth some of the hate it gets online. I've got serious issues with how they treated Korra throughout the series, but that's something to talk about after you finish the entirety of the series. Partly because of how the Korra saga is structured, as four near separate stories.
    Books 3 and 4 are by far where I think the show really does take off more and find a grander sense of purpose.
    I have to agree with you on one thing! Some of the best moments (and my favorite within the entire Korra series) are with "secondary" characters like Tenzin/Bumi/Kaya, Jinora, the Beifongs (Book 4 will be great my dude I can't wait for you to see it), and my boi Bolin! Good episodes are based on the person's view if good storytelling. I like everything before Beginnings because I like complexity. People like Beginnings because it reveals the lore. People like everything after Beginnings for reasons I cant figure out. To figure out what episode you like you must figure out what you think a good episode and good storytelling is.

    I agree on a lot of points you made. Aang and Tenzin in the fog was extremely powerful. Weirdly enough, my favorite 2 episodes of the season, Beginnings with Avatar Wan, also ruined the rest of ATLA for me. I love Avatar Wan and I want to see more of him. I think he is the perfect first Avatar. I just didn't think the story fit the rest of ATLA lore or eastern philosophy very well. Why was Raava and Vaatu so black and white? I just read an interview that came out a couple of days ago where it was either Bryan or Michael who mentioned loving Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke for having gray characters--there wasn't a true villain in that movie...so why was the villain of book 2 so boringly cliche text book bad guy villain? (sorry, I will always love Bryke, but I'm just disappointed in the way things turned out in book 2)
    I think Bryke did an amazing job with the spirits in ATLA, where you got the sense that these spirits were neither good nor bad. They acted on their own feelings, like humans do, and were quite mysterious and unpredictable. I felt like the spirits in LoK book 2 were very...cartoonish and Disneyfied. They seemed very black and white to me. I think the way for Bryke to fix this is to have Raava and Vaatu combined again, and have Vaatu a part of the Avatar or something like that. The Avatar is a being of balance. The Avatar is not supposed to be perfect, as we can see each Avatar made their own major mistakes during their era.
    And as much as I loved Beginnings, the episodes also took away the mystery of the lore, making the universe a bit less fascinating to me. Maybe I'm just rambling on for nothing and contradicting myself so I should stop. Overall, book 2 was painful for me to watch. But it didn't ruin the whole series for me. I love LoK and I love Bryke for bringing these stories to us. I hope Bryke will join again with Aaron Ehaz to bring us an amazing Earthbender Avatar in the future (and maybe this Earth bender avatar can get back the connection to the past lives again?? Here's hoping).
    edit: oh yeah, Varrick rocks. "Asami, who saved your company--I did! Mako, who got you thrown in jail--I did...oh yeah, I guess that was a bad thing."

    • @ReelJames
      @ReelJames  4 года назад

      Wow, L.C., I had no idea about that interview, and you're right, it did feel almost too much like a very cut-copy-paste storyline with "good vs evil." I definitely understand feeling conflicted with Beginnings Pts. 1 and 2. I love them but I feel some type of way about them erasing a lot of what was established with ATLA. Varrick was such a gem! Zhu Li, too. They were a great addition to this season. I'm so excited for Book 3, now!

    Great review James! And yes the writing definitely struggled this season but it was because of them being rushed like you mentioned. And Nickelodeon also made them end the show which is why the finale also felt like an ending. But books 3 and 4 connect much better in my opinion because they got them at the same time. Nick finally let the writers do what they do best. Thank you so much for giving us all the episodes of book 3. Means so much because personally this book youre gonna see genuinely might be better than any book in avatar! As a final note, just.... pay some attention in book 3 and 4 as to certain characters spending time together. They never really have before so its very interesting. Nevertheless, I'm ecstatic for book 3 my friend. See you then!

I haven't started Book 3 yet, but I'm starting to see why Books 3 and 4 are widely regarded as the favorites if they were given more time to work on them. And I'll definitely pay attention to certain characters and their relationships in Book 3! So excited to get started!

      @@ReelJamesyou nailed it on the head with everything I love about it, I never noticed the animation difference but I do agree Unalaq or however you spell it was not the best villain fit for Korra, but I absolutely loved how they tied Avatar Wan’s story arc with Korea’s story arc of the spirit world. Ravaa and Vatu were very interesting and, as most people hate the end where Unulaq destroys Korra’s connection with the past avatars, I enjoyed it because of how out of line it was and how no one was expecting it. It also added to Korra’s list of things to control, like how to move forward with no past avatar connections, weaving the spirit world with the human world, and finding herself and her beliefs of how the world should be under her age of the avatar. I haven’t seen the show for a while but plan on rewatching it very soon. I hope I enjoy it as much as I did the first time I watched it. Alright I’m done rambling, and I hope I didn’t mess anything up as I explained what I liked about the season. I’m glad you made this video to show the other side of the fandom who has not completely agreed with the way the show went. I really appreciate it. Thank you.

    Season 2 is one of the best series I mean y’all wanted them to fight like World War Two or something in the civil war when there was a reason why unalaq opened the spirit portal lmao when in the first episode yall wanted to ignore unalaq opening the spirit portals lmao the book is clearly named spirits. Literally all the seasons of ATLA apart from book 3 of ATLA had the slowest starts of the whole series combined. I mean what tf is the GREAT DIVIDE lmao Civil Wars part 1 and 2 are far better than the first half episodes of season 1 but nooooo y’all quick to bash season 2 💀 far better than season 1 of ATLA and in pur with season 2 ATLA

    avatar The Last Airbender had a great beginning a solid middle and a clear ending that made everybody Satisfied. which is why it's considered a masterpiece in every possible aspect.
    on the other hand avatar the legend of korra was kind of a mess throu it had a great animation budget I can't say they invested the same amount of efforts into its storytelling.
    especially in season 2.
    - No clear beginning no specific end goal
    - Every season has its own villain to deal with
    - no prominent or significant character developments
    I can understand the idea of an evil avatar sounds great "on paper" but when you try to undo that whole mythology you previously established just because !!! . that's when things go sideways.
    And dont give me some b******* like its tying to be it's own show The only reason it was made in the first place is because of the already build atla fandom..
    In s2 i really hate how they made korra into some stupid dumb bitch that always complains 🤬
    , I'm a teenager and that's not how a teenager Act.
    It thinks its self as mature show by insulting Ang's character calling him a terrible father. 🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕
    Can you imagine how amazing it would have been if Amon were to have a redemption arc and they all fought one endgame villain "mybe a better version of dark avatar or just a powerful spirit that could end the world *not vatu* " while still not diminishing other established arcs like kuvira or redlotes.

    season 2 was busy for no reason. none of the arcs felt that important, unalaq sucked, the backstory was cool but i think i would've rather not knowing it. idk i have a lot of minor issues with it that pile up and have a big effect on how enjoyable this season is. this season isn't rewatchable for me.

      @@ReelJames For me the whole start of the Book 2 felt wierd also the end of Unalaq arc could have been done better I didnt see that he cares about spirits at all I would want too see him caring about spirits more then humans result in him becoming the dark avatar not because he was power hungry. If they would have done this way he would be a lot more compeling antagonist.

    I hate Bolin’s “romance” with Esna because it’s played for laughs and him being an actor. I wasn’t invested in Asami or Mako’s arcs. I couldn’t take Unalaq seriously. The only thing they did right was Iroh. I enjoyed Varrick. It’s understandable why Aang would focus on Tenzin more than Kya or Bumi. I’m not crazy on Korra losing her connection to other Avatars. On a side note, don’t push yourself too hard with doing the reactions and your schedule.

      I definitely didn't like the character arcs for Mako and Asami. It felt as if the writers got lazy and tried to focus more energy on Unalaq, but even that failed. I do hope we get a more solid villain for Book 3 and that there's more consistency from episode to episode.
