Funny you said that, because Ed O’Neill was nearly cast as Sam Malone, and Shelley Long ended up playing his ex-wife on “Modern Family.” Also, regarding your comparison: *1.* “Cheers” and “Married With Children” both lasted 11 seasons. *2.* Rebecca Howe and Jefferson D’Arcy both surpassed their predecessors in the number of seasons/episodes they appeared in. *3.* Diane Chambers and Steve Rhoades were pretentious snobs. Rebecca Howe and Jefferson D’Arcy were gold diggers.

Haven't watched Cheers in a long time. What immediately strikes me about Kirstie Alley now is how much she reminds me of Lauren Bacall. Her droll delivery, their facial features and even their voices bear a remarkable similarity. Funny how I had never seen that before. I know most love Diane chambers but I thought the show got better when she left .. That Sam and Diane relationship had gotten old and it was toxic Af and she was a snobby know it all who made everything about herself .. With Rebecca Howe there were better storylines and it made the whole cast better plus she was hotter to me than Shelly long lol
I love this show. Shelly Long was amazing as Diane Chambers but somehow I love Rebecca a tad more. The whole cast was amazing. Woody, Norm, Cliff, Carla, Sam etc
@@TheSully00714 Wouldn't say unique since there are quite a few people who prefer Rebecca to Diane. Kirstie also received an Emmy and People's Choice for this role so I'd say she definitely was pretty well liked by most fans of the show, or at least a good portion of it.

I agree... loved Rebecca in the beginning. However, I liked both her and Diane for different reasons. Diane was sassy and sharp-witted. But her character had more depth. One minute, she was funny or endearing, the next annoying as hell. That's a great character. Disliking Diane is like disliking Cliff. Cliff was annoying as hell, but endearing.
Yep - me too. She was a little stiff at the beginning, but I think they really found the right balance for her by the middle of her first season. By the time Robin Colcord showed up at the beginning of season 8, she had become too much of a mess.

I think both Diane and Rebecca were funny in very specific and different ways which made both great characters, but I have to say as great as Shelley was I just prefer Rebecca's character who imo was so much funnier when she became the biggest loser of them all. I do think though that Sam's relationship with Rebecca had far more depth and actually evolved unlike his one dimensional relationship with Diane. Sam and Rebecca started off with Sam just trying to get his hot boss into bed to actually developing a genuinely close friendship. Sam and Diane got stale by season 5.
