  • In this week’s episode we discuss on Platycerium with cup shape spore caps.
We look at the 3 stages of spore cap formation, how to know when the spores are ready and methods of collecting the spores.
For non cup forming ferns, we recommend the scrapping method. Check it out here- Collecting Staghorn Fern Spores - Ep03 • Collecting Staghorn Fe...

Thank you for this, expecting mine to spores soon and now I know how to collect and will propagate them using your techniques. I am from north borneo. Though its abundance in our forests but required special license from our local authorities depending where are they located so to get fro nurseries here it cost a lot and not everyone cup of tea as they said. Thanks again for your channel.

Glad you found the video useful. It’s an enjoyable process. Do share some updates from time to time.
Yes, ferns are a very specific plant, doesn’t produce flowers which might not appeal to some.

My type of stag horn fern is a little different and I haven’t seen any part with spores forming, can you demo some different types or just tell us where on them to find spores?

Read that the spores are carcinogenic if inhaled can you shed some light on that? I mount my ridleyi above my bed and it's a concern for me.

Have not come across of Platycerium spores being carcinogenic but they a known allergen. For home growers growing them indoors it where it is advisable to cut the spores pads / cup or bag them in plastic bags when you spot them. Ridleyi aren’t too bad because the spore cap can be easily cut off. Having said that it’s pretty much the same as anything with fine particles that could cause allergens and that would have to be prolong exposure to it.

@@TheRootCulturist thank you so much for your valuable tips! I probably will go with the bag route since its kinda wasteful to cut it away.

I recently collected some spores from my stag and inoculated them in medium. However, I am only realizing through your video that the spores would have been dispersed already as the frond (still intact to fern) has dried up for awhile now. Any idea if it will still be possible for spores to be present on the dried up frond for propagation?
Anyway, appreciate your sharing on this dark art. Thank you and please keep them coming!! 🙇‍♂️

Glad you found it useful. By medium do you mean plant /tissue culture medium? It’s possible, you may find some viable spores left that have not been dispersed.

@@TheRootCulturist By medium I mean substrate, exactly as you did in the video :)
