- How to manage a simple compost toilet, producing compost for fruit bushes in the garden. It takes about half an hour each year to change the chambers, so here we are doing it on New Year's Eve.

@ 457 this gentleman looks like a king on his throne and master of all he surveys!! A job well done.
My dad would have loved this vid ,we had a composting toilet that I being labour unit #1 emptied into the main compost bin just to kill any pathogens.
He passed 3yrs ago his ashes we spread on his 15 acre block .
His name was Terry Wrench
No there are two ways - aerobic, where you let the air get to it, and anaerobic, where you seal it and it produces methane etc. For a simple one like this aerobic is best.
How about a nomadic compost toilet, that allows you to move the toilet when full and leave the compost pile to directly plant in?
@delythgriffiths I like the welsh they care for the planet and the areas they live in.
Thanks Tony. Will keep it simple x
Yes it just soaks away. I have made the bottom open to the earth. This is simpler and more natural than sealing the whole thing. You can try a system for catching the pee separately, but then you have to ensure that no soak gets into it. The ones I have made with separate pee collection have been more trouble than they are worth. We never use this loo just to pee - we pee in the garden or on the compost heap.
He is my grandad!!!!!!😨😨😨😨😁😀☺
So is it basically just like normal soil by the time you empty it, no bad smell?
@GanjaStuPipesUp Wales. I'm a West Wale Welsh girl, there are a lot of small communities that live like this. You should look up or even visit CAT (Centre of Alternative Technology) near Machynlleth, it's all about this kind of stuff, how to live with the planet instead of just plonked on it.
Thanks. This is really useful. So is it ok to just the compost in one side decomposing anaerobically? I've heard some people say it should be in an air tight container?
I'm looking to build one too. Isn't the 'tree bog' system the same but without any maintenance, just letting the coppice trees do the work?
can you use leaves instead of saw dust?
