  • Every year on Juneteenth, we commemorate the fall of slavery, which was ended in Texas on June 19, 1865. Annette Gordon-Reed, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and author of On Juneteenth, is one of the key voices who brought this holiday into the national conversation. In this exclusive video, she explains how she used to understand the holiday as "a Black version of July 4"-and how she came to understand it as a celebration of our long quest for true equity. In talks Annette reveals how this holiday can be a moment for us all-not just Black Texans-to reflect on the progress we've made and commit to our ongoing fight for true freedom and racial justice.
