Larry Bird - 37/10/7 vs. Kings, 1989 (23pts in 4th qtr + OT!)

- This was one of Bird's RARE off-nights where he couldn't hit the side of a barn.. That was until the 4th quarter. On a TEAR he closed the game w/ 23pts, making all but one of his 10 FG attempts.

Bird’s fadeaway was unstoppable
Bird gave a clinic on how to play basketball in the 4th quarter. Not just shooting but defense and passing. We won't ever see another Larry Bird.
Larry Bird is the GOAT.
Larry Bird is the GOAT.
The GOAT
GOAT
Savant
As banged up as he was, Bird was always in great shape stamina-wise. He always had gas in the tank in the 4th quarter and overtime.
A whole career of great plays from #33 .Damn, why do guys like him have to get old!? 😦
He was such a pleasure to watch.
IT JUST GOES TO SHOW A BANGED UP BIRD IS BETTER THAN NO BIRD AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!
As a C's fan and always thought Ainge was a good all around player. Can't believe he was already gone by '89. How I miss the 80's Celtics and rivalrys we had back then.
i myself was in disbelief when danny was traded to a nobody in Kansas(now Sacramento)
Mykov Rivera - If people watch his defense against a prime MJ it was really good. It frustrated the heck out of MJ. Its worth a look. Danny was an all American and had a rare quality to play multiple sports. He was truly gifted, as we know Jordan was.

But the Kings were already the Sacramento Kings when Ainge got traded there as you can see in this video, they were no longer the Kansas City Kings when Ainge arrived, they had already been the Sacramento Kings for a few years.
Thanks for posting! You can bet both Ainge and Bird wanted to win this game. I hated to see Celtics trade Ainge - he could really shoot but Larry could do it all. Nice steal from Ainge by Larry and as usual, Bird at the end of games just seemed to be able to will his team and himself to great play. Bird just seemed to have clutch play in his genetic makeup.
Me too. Danny became a solid starter, though not a real star. His loss hurt Boston, no doubt.
Larry Bird was so good 😊. Larry Legend indeed!
Hated seeing Ainge wearing anything but a Celtics jersey. I think he was the first to go - and that signalled the beginning of the end of the starting 5 we were so accustomed to.
Reggie was good but I agree, also too bad Len Bias past also could you imagine Danny Ainge there with Reggie Lewis backing him Len Bias who would have played so kevin wouldn't have hurt his foot in 87, I think the Celtics go to pull out another title or two
33 13 - Reggie was such a great baller. Such a natural flow to his movements. Maybe similar to Clyde Drexler. Reggie just had a smoothness about his play. Hard to describe.
Bird is the Word!
Great upload, this is pretty rare. Larry wasn't his usual self anymore there, with back problems and after back and ankles surgeries, amazing what he could still do at that point, so ridiculously skilled and with unreal intangibles, of course being very tall and strong helped during those years. Ainge finished with 39/6/9, guess he really wanted to go off against his former team, Bird, clutch as most of the time, had to put all of that down though.
Ainge was real, bro. He averaged almost 18 pts for the Kings that year, w 6 assists.
And to think that this was an injured bird. Dude could still dominate even though you can see he's not 100%. My GOAT right there.
When that freakin fadeaway was falling, forget it!!!
He was truly unstoppable.
Because then they’d play up on him….even double team Bird 🦅. Then what ?? he’d drive or create an easy layup for his teammate!!!
He was just amazing 🥲
It hurts to see Danny on the other side 😢
couz was the greatest color guy of all time in nba
Thank you so much for posting this. Great Bird game to watch. Unfortunately the average at best play by play guy was an overtalker, not allowing the far superior Cousy to talk more. Long live Gil Santos!
I wonder how Ainge feels to play against the team he loved so much..
540 why bird great, most player take short shot, but he gives mchale for layup
60 year old Bird would dominate today in 2023
That arc at 2:27....pure beauty. A Danny Ainge in a Kings jersey sighting!
@3:05 can you imagine the smack Bird must have been giving Ainge up and down the court? I always liked Ainge and he matured as he got older.
I love the logic of any team that says “you know, I’m going to foul Bird...he has to be tired and at least miss ONE, right?!”
With Len Bias and Reggie Lewis living longer and some freshness in that aging Celtic lineup we might have gotten another ring out of those old guys. Bird could have definitely rested his back more and who knows. Fun to speculate though.
If Len and Reggie did not die Celtics probably win another 3-6 titles. They had a good young crew with the vets. Gamble Shaw Brown Pickney Kleine etc Solid 9-10 guys.
Todd redsoxfan and Rick Fox a little later. And Dino Radja came over a couple of years after that.
in the year 1986 when Len was drafted by the celts and before the season began, he died and it started years later some bad choices made by boston. a nut bum by the name of brian shaw and rick fox. misfortunes felled on len bias after he was saw dead just days before draft day and with reggie lewis after he collapsed during practice drills and never recovered. They could have stretched their number of championships made if not for these.
try to catch me ridin birdy
He doesn't run fast, doesn't jump high, but plays the best of everybody else
Great quote 👍🏻
Dec 27, 1989
115 to 112 OT
Season after Bird's dbl surgery.
☘️ Larry Legend
Watching Reggie Lewis brings back great memories. He used to Jordan fits defensively. Lewis’s death was completely unnecessary.
rememebr len bias 1986.....would been about 6 titles in row
Sacramento with that Kenny the Jet and Danny Ainge backcourt
3:35 Lol, Bird stealing Ainge blind.
+MerkinMuffly Danny Ainge should have known better lmao
As the announcer stated Vintage.
I thought somebody said Bird was slow?
"Great move by Bird!" Yeah, no shit.
Cousys
accent is hilarious 😆
4:18 Look at this!!
If only Larry hadn't overtrained, His back would've been fine. But paving his own driveway and running in the cheap seats in the Garden? Crazy. Just Crazy.
And this was an old beat up Bird.
He had some pretty nice stats this season 89-90.
this is pervis's rookie campaign 89/90
Ainge called him "Out of service Pervis".
after that '88 Olympics disaster that they were only good for 3rd place
....but they were then as college players up against young and old pros in europe and latinos
Oops. Danny is there and playing his heart out
Ainge had a good game, too.
39pts 6r 9a 1s 2b
But not the W
Reggie lewis should be on 2k
why mchale didnt get 40 shots a game is beyond me, and prish many mor shots too can dog most centers
The Boston Celtics officially ended when Larry Bird retired and underwent major surgery in that year 1989.
Larry "Lace" Bird
Danny Ainge: You should trade Bird, McHale and Parish while you can still get something for them
Red Auerbach: Let's trade Danny Ainge for Joe Kleine
I’m sure in his secret heart Danny regrets ever having said that...
@@irishgrl true.
We’re seeing clips from 3 different quarters, here-not just the 4th.
Includes OT
Who was the play by play guy here?
Not the same without Danny Ainge
Was this the kings inaugural season?
I think they were known before as the Cincinnati Royals in the late 60s
The Kings played in Kansas City until the end of the 1985 season. Then went to Sacramento
I’m for Ainge over the entire Celtics
M.j please I am magic
Ainge traded to the Kings?
DJ usually 5-15 screwed celtics
i liek bird posting lower
LeBron who?
I can beat both Larry B and Magic J in basketball in my prime
Brutally bad kings teams......
