Spent many days in my youth walking these tracks. Definitely proud of my Lakehurst heritage. Haven't been out that way in decades. I know this video is a few years old but it's great to see these tracks again!
My father helped build houses in Leisure Knoll when I was a kid in the 80s. I used to go to work with him in the summer and would go and walk this same stretch of track. My fear of heights and watching the movie Stand By Me had me far too afraid to go any further than that bridge lol
I have to believe that bridge is either new or newly renovated. It's a similar story with the twin trestles south of there- just past the Lakehurst junction.
Bridge brought back memories as a kid on grandparent's farm in Lawrenceville. Tracks ran behind farm house then over creek. Could view crayfish by slowly flipping over rocks in water. Tracks long gone. Don't know about bridge. Farm became back fields of Rider College mid 60's. I-95 closed Denow Road at RR crossing. RR and driveway tree line still visible from I-95. Early Farmingdale 80's walked the dogs on RR tracks behind Bennett Road. Never knew about that train until your video. Good stuff.
speedskiff2 Ooh, I went to Rider University and spent a lot of time running through the woods behind the campus with my friends (literally running, they were on the track team and we'd run x-country as part of our workout.) So I know exactly where you are talking about.
Awesome video I think that used to be the blue comet line and also the New Jersey Transit railroad line they are talking about reactivating that Railroad line across that train trestle and having Stone trains come through Lakehurst New Jersey Manchester township New Jersey whiting New Jersey and more RUclipsr millennium Force has a few videos of it there is another railroad bridge that goes over some highway near Lakehurst New Jersey
That section of railroad was part of the Jersey Central in which the Blue Comet luxury train made its way through from Jersey City to Atlantic City. The last train that went to Lakehurst that I have seen was in 2010. Trains had to go down that far after dropping supplies off at Lakewood so the engines could be switched to the other side of the train (you would have seen two tracks in Lakehurst for them to do so) and then go back through Lakewood towards Red Bank. They built a second track after 2010 in Lakewood so the engines can switch ends sooner saving fuel. That bridge and two others nearby were rebuilt in 2014 or 2015 by Conrail, in which they probably still need to maintain to access a spur into the Navy base. So the line is technically not abandoned. As a matter of fact, Conrail owns the section until Union Avenue in Lakehurst and the rest of the line south for about 13 miles is owned privately by a sand company who is refurbishing it (very very slowly) for future transport of his products.
I grew up in Lakehurst in the 80s and 90s. I lived on Willow St, and used to spend most of my days on the Union Ave side of town (most of my friends at the time lived in the area of the elementary school and Pine St.). Walked these tracks both directions many times, and I can't remember seeing a train rumble through Lakehurst since the late 80s... I moved from the area in 1996/1997, so I'm not sure what happened after that.
@@ninevoltromeo The last train I saw in Lakehurst was in June 2010 well before (North) the Rt.70 bridge sitting on the siding. It had a NS engine in front. The last I have seen anything south of the Rt. 70 bridge and across Union Ave. was a black locomotive sitting by itself on the transfer station track in July 2009.
This is one of three bridges CSAO (Conrail Shared Assets Operations) refurbished about a year ago anticipating sand train traffic that would start up again south of Lakehurst down in Whitings/Woodmanise area from Clayton Sand and Gravel. So far those plans have not materialized and the line remains dormant south of Lakewood.
I lived in ocean county through 1997-2005 and I never even knew there was a abandoned railroad in Lakehurst I learn something new everyday lol great capture dude
This is a gorgeous backdrop and places like this are so relaxing to visit. Where was the deer you mentioned? Looked for him on the video but you may have not showed him. Great video buddy!
This is cool . My Grandparents were from Lakehurst I don't know about maybe about 40 miles from the Naval Station where the Hindenburg Blew up . they said you could feel the heat in the air and see the fire in the sky . then they moved to Egg Harbor city NJ
Abandoned or not, you should never walk on a railroad trestle. Then if you absolutely cannot resist the urge, you should stay between the two rails. What you did was very unsafe. And those ties had enough creosote on them to make them slippery. I guess you could video yourself falling off the bridge and post it. That bridge was high enough that the FRA would require fall protection for everyone on the bridge. It's not the fall that kills you, it's that sudden stop at the bottom.
the traks on top of that bridge looks to new to be not use but the is a old rail line not to far from my house that has not seen a train in over 50 yearsnd one bridge looks new on at the end of the line
Listen up in Bergen county there's a Branch line Called the Northern Branch line and CSX Owns the Branch line the only problem is rails there are bad the spikes on the rails are loose causing the train to rock back in forth Even the Crossings also if you go North to Tappan NY it's a Dead end and there's high grass covering the rails and tree growing out making bushes of grass there's nothing to see going North to Tappan NY

Right by my house ! If you take them tracks south a few miles, it would go right behind my house !
How long is the bridge ?
I would guess 100’

@@NewJerseyOutdoorAdventures you're welcome your videos are awesome I enjoy watching them
I'm wondering how close this is to the Lakehurst NAS (Naval Air Station), the site of a famous airship disaster of 1937.
Only a 1/4 mile away

@@jasonligo895 The last train to Lakehurst period was in November 2010 with NS 5281 in the lead. It was in Conrail paint at the time.

I heard that some of this line has reopened. Would it be wise to let people know if it has.
Ginger Rail it was never shut down.
