I think he's the only pianist to play Mozart with such life. Literally every phrase and note has such vitality direction, purpose and life! Truly amazing playing. Listening to other pianists play this sonata, undoubtedly great playing, but it just seems clinical. Nothing like this.
I‘m in absolute awe, for this performance, so calm, complete control. I‘m currently learning this piece, and it’s so inspiring to see him master this wonderful piece.

The quality of his pianissimo, legato and staccato is absolutely impeccable. This really is second to none. Where some pianists have to play Rachmaninov concerti or Liszt etudes to show-off their virtuosity, Vladimir Horowitz manage, in a "simple" piece of music, to demonstrate the pure evidence of what is one of the greatest piano technique the world have ever seen.

@@aallpprr8998But don’t forget Horowitz played on Steinways that were custom made to his preference, including a much lighter action. IOW on a “normal” piano he would’ve struggled with his technique.
Sorry if i'm dumb but why are his hands so low all the time? the wrists i mean. Is it just cus he's old, or what? It looks like his hands/fingers are flatter than others.
I'm skeptical of this being "the way they were taught back then." My teacher was Russian and would never have let me get away with a technique like this. But if I asked her why someone like Horowitz could do it and I couldn't, her answer would be what her teacher told her: essentially, these concert pianists are gods and can do whatever they want and we're just mortals and we can't until we get to their level.
He keeps it low when he is playing the fast sections and brings them up higher on the more staccato sections. If you think about it, it makes perfect sense.
After the true answer still isn't given, I'm going to try. Lowering the wrist like that makes it possible to use *no* arm weight, but only the strength of the fingers. Especially when playing Mozart, this is extremely important. It is a difficult skill to learn to. My teacher teaches it to me. But very important is not to copy the exact style of him, but rather create an own. Most teachers don't show this to their students because 1) they don't know better or 2) the students are not able to achieve just taking elements from his technique. Every single pianist has an own technique, as every body an personality is different. I hope that answers the question well enough.
You don't have to play always with curved fingers. Flat fingers is another type hand position in some piano schools. Curved fingers was used in a specific time and does not work for every type of piano piece. You can't play Liszt with curved fingers for example.
Horowitz represents the pinnacle of human achievement. Simply incomparable and brilliant.

To the people who say Mozarts piano sonates cant be played with feeling and expression, I just show them this... Thank you sir Horowitz
Such a nonsense. Mozart's music can't be played without feelings and expression. It's all just about it!
Who says that?
Did anybody actually say it or you're assuming things?
I never heard that, but yeah
When I listen to Horowitz I stop caring who the composer is.

@D. Brown 😊
I can’t believe that he plays so well with flat fingers
He starts with a straight finger but if you look closely, they bend quite a lot
Flat is a nice way to put it... haha
yea cuz his piano is lightweight (keys) and is accompanied with a great cost for that
