    Living full-time in my rolling tiny home has been the best decision of my life. Off-Grid living offers a peace and connection to life that you just can't explain. When i first started van life i build a stealth camper van with the mindset the you had to live a stealth van life and i soon discovered that you can just live the city van life and boondock in the countryside and as long as you are respectful of the backcountry and cities you live in. Stealth van life in not necessary. Be proud of the life you choose to live, Share this van life journey with everyone. Remember Tiny Homes and The whole tiny house lifestyle is very popular and #vanlife is no different. When you don't hide it people will come say hi and ask you questions. The world is more curious than hateful. Well......Welcome to my everyday van life adventures. My name is Chrome Valdez and i travel full-time with Cruz the bulldog. Stay weird everyone and thank you for being here.

    When cooking in cast iron, always use grease, oil, butter, etc and get the pan to temp before beginning the cooking. You will have to re-season the pan you used today and start fresh with the above mentioned instructions. Happy camping!

    • @victoriabaker4400
      @victoriabaker4400 4 года назад

      That's just what I was going to say. That in addition to seasoning, you also have to cook in a certain way, always bring the pan up to temperature, put in your oil/grease/butter etc, then put in the food. That's the nonstick cooking method. It's a skill to be developed, but that's the basic fact. (I bring the pan up to temperature before putting in the butter or any oil that can burn. Oils like coconut oil or other nonburning ones can go into the pan earlier.) Also, when bringing a pan up to temperature, ideally use a med-high temp instead of blasting it, so that the whole pan gets heated up evenly before starting to cook. I will sometimes start a pan on low while I get things ready, then turn it up to temp when ready to cook. That way the pan quickly goes up to temperature, completely evenly. All these things are just intuitive at a certain point, but everyone has to find their own way with it.

    Chrome: Seasoning your pans just takes time. When you clean them, don't soap and scrub. Use hot water and baking soda if things are stuck-- or vinegar. Boil the cleaning water in the pan if things are really stuck. These things won't take your finish off. Cook with grease, oil, butter and heat the pan before you put the grease in it. And remember it isn't a non-stick pan like some that have a chemical or plastic finish. Stuff will stick sometimes. How do I know all this? Fifty years of cooking experience. Bon appetit, dear.

    What I do to keep my cast iron pan seasoned is cook bacon in it or fry French fries in an inch of grape seed oil. Never wash it with soap, but just rinse it out with warm water and dry it out with a lint fee towel. Every time you cook in the pan, rinse, dry, and wipe a new coat of oil into it. Flax seed oil or olive oil. When you fry eggs, float the eggs on a 1\4 inch layer of oil or bacon grease.

    I'm a member of I.D.O.S. (International Dutch Oven Society). You did everything right. The campfire was a great idea for seasoning. Like you said, just keep coating it. Most people will cook up some bacon or just onions, to get a nice flavored seasoning. Most everyone follows the cowboy, when they start out. Keep following his suggestions.

  • @SoLowParanormal
    @SoLowParanormal 4 года назад +10

    In all of my research about seasoning a cast iron skillet without an oven, the main one I got is that after you clean your pan and wipe it down with oil like everyone’s telling you to do, heat it up till it starts smoking and then let it cool off. Do that two or three times not every time but when you notice the seasoning is starting to wear off.

    The seasoning is not so much about the oiling, but about the heat. It needs the highest temperature of an oven because what makes the pan non-stick is that the oil on the surface polymerises. I did this to my pan and it works, but eventualy it needs re-doing. All the best Chrome, and thanks for the videos! X

    Great video Chrome!! You're definitely in your element and it shows!
    FYI -- about a kayak -- while they are no longer made, you can at times find used FOLBOT kayaks, which are collapsible rather than inflatable. They consist of a folding aluminum frame that you slip inside the outer skin ( like putting on a slipper ) then expand the frame and lock open with a couple of twists. They're truly amazing, perform well and when packed up are about the size of a smaller hockey bag, weighing maybe 25 -35lbs.
    There are websites where you will find descriptions and used inventory.

    I use a cast iron skillet on my stove all of the time and I've never "seasoned" it. When I first used it, it was pretty much bare iron, but then I kept cooking in it and rinsing it without soap. One key thing, if you have stuff stuck to your pan, use water to boil it free, then just wipe it out. If I have to scrub it a little, I use a green scotch pad. What I've been doing seems to keep the protection layer on the pan. I mainly just use olive oil and it's been fine.

    I don't use dish soap. I use kosher salt. Then I use oil and wipe it down with a paper towel. It might the perfect way to do it but it works. Enjoyed the scenery and your thoughts on van life. 💘

    I have my Mother’s iron skillet (which belonged to her mother, my grandmother). I love it. It is so versatile. I fry with it, bake meatloafs, casseroles, & roasts in it, and I bake gingerbread and other breads in it. My mother always told me to simply wipe the skillet clean with a cloth after each use, wipe more oil/lard in and outside and wipe down, and NEVER use water to clean it. Yes, I DO understand what you mean. I love spending time with my family, but I also enjoy my solitude. I am alone quite often, but never lonely, especially when I get to enjoy nature.👍

    Chrome you could always strap a kayak to your roof cargo carrier going lengthwise on it
    you would basically put a couple hooks inside of the plastic and then have some straps going around the kayak to hold it on all the time

    The key to seasoning cast iron is using it. Use metal utensils, not wood or plastic, and scrub it clean with a chainmail pad when done. Over time the pores and imperfections that make food stick will get smaller and smaller until the surface is incredibly smooth. I've tried the sanding thing, and it is great for initially seasoning a new pan, but only regular use gets you that true nonstick finish.

    “Please be quiet and respectful”...BEST.WORDS.EVER on a backcountry sign. I LOVE how nice Canadian folks are eh?! In the U.S. we simply say...STFU. Thanks for sharing such peace and calm. I’m waiting with bated breath for Canada to open the gate for the rest of us. Cheering you on C2 (C-squared)...it’s my math nerd term of endearment I use for Chrome+Cruz when I’m talking about you to others. Cheering you on!! 💃🏻‼️💯❤️🚐💨

    Chrome your making me so jealous. I bought a van almost a year ago now, lived in it 3 months, tried to drive it from Florida to Arizona and the transmission gave out half way through Texas. Now i'm stuck renting again trying to save up for another van.
