To bad I don’t have a 3D printer
The mechanism you showed for the minute hand resetting is similar to the one used in a medieval rack clock
its a smart design, and showcases the alternatives for timekeeping that don't usually see the light of day
well done
@@Chris-P.-Bacon-III
Put some weight on your pendulum and shorten it to reduce parasitic flexion induced by plastic deformations along your pendulum.
Does it have to be a 5 pound weight? I live in Europe...
“I extended the pendulum a little bit” Proceeds to show a whole meter stick😂
😂
Fun fact, the meter was nearly originally defined as the length of a 2 second pendulum!
@@Jackarooo this deserves more likes
Well it's not a lie.
@@Jackarooo Yup, one of the reasons it wasn't adopted is that gravity varies between the equator and earth's poles by a few tenths of a percent, affecting the oscillation freqency of the pendulum.
Dude is slowly discovering exactly how a standard grandfather clock works and I'm thoroughly enjoying it
Exactly! Learned so much :)
He should do a watch movement next
@@campshay19not likely, the pieces are too small to 3d print
@@illusedhe can just do a massive watch that he wears as a backpack or something
WAIT WHY DOES THAT MAKE SENSE THOUGH 😭
Bro! this is it! I have been eager to see this thing and excited to see how your design has come together.
Thanks Dom!
I will definitely buy the plans and make this when it is done.
I appreciate that!
Will look really cool on my wall lol. But I wonder where I can 3d print it I don’t have a 3d printer…
@@Dra3oon pretty sure there are services online that will print them for you
@@Dra3oon there are some companies out there that can 3d print for you. One I know (and believe has relatively low prices but I could be wrong) is jlc PCB. They can do all sorts of things for you
And doesn't he offer a printed version in the Kickstarter?
Absolutely fantastic time to be alive. Never thought I'd see 3d printing at home like this.
Reseting minute hand? Uhh, that's badass.
im doing my batchelor of engineering and I duckin love this series.
that's all I had to say, thank you
The horology nerd in me lost my fucking mind when I saw that you're working on a retrograde complication 😍😍😍😍
Haha!! Thanks for giving me the proper terminology! Really excited about it
No shame in that dear, everyone has to make a living somehow🏴☠️
@@mattyp723 what...?
@@Engineezy you're welcome! Was really excited to see you use the term in your video about the clock! Just happy to be of some assistance! Haha
@@InTheMindOfficial pirates of the Caribbean reference about horology
Really cool that you are going for a retrograde-minutehand!
Really enjoy these updates. Can't wait!🙌🏼
Thank you!!
My father was a watchmaker. He also repaired cuckoo clocks, many GI's coming home from Europe would bring or send one home, so they were plentiful. He'd bring them home to be hung on the wall to test its' time keeping abilities. As you can imagine noon was a loud event! I learned how to "wind" them by gently pulling the pinecone shaped weights and the proper way to change the hour. This brings back many happy memories! Thanks!
So its just a wall mounted grandfather clock now
But made at home and with a better mechanical understanding of how it works
You're the first channel I've subscribed to from shorts. I love seeing this stuff please keep it up!!
So essentially you're making a modernized grandfather clock, nice
Glad to see that a younger generation is taking up the mantle of mechanical engineering.
First video I’ve seen of 3D printing making something useful and cool. Thank you sir.
Still loving it! 👍
Are you considering more, wall mounted kinetic motion sculptures for a future project?
Absolutely am!
@@Engineezy 👍👍👍
I live the unique hand! Also love that you uploaded the files
This is the coolest thing I never knew anything about.
Hahaha I was in the same boat 2 months ago
This taught me a lot about the inner workings of a clock. Thanks a lot for documenting this process
I do wanna say that the "unique" way has been done in a number of clocks
but a cool thing about those golden ratio style gears is that you can match two up together, so you can have two different hands running together
The efficiency and accuracy on that thing is going to be amazing
Really cool! Especially love the idea of making the minute hand reset every hour; super unique.
Given the length of the pendulum you have essentially made a grandfather clock, which is cool as heck
I would love to build one. Normally I'm adjusting designs for my own needs. But having so much respect for such a cool project and your work, I'll absolutely stick to your design.
That minute hand idea is really interesting I really like that
I’ll mention that shrinking the minute range like that does mean that it has lower resolution and makes it harder to read accurate time, but other than that this is amazing!!
Slower frequency/ fewer moving parts probably means less stress on the parts and lower complexity, which in turn means less can go wrong.
Beautiful design and workmanship
Just wanted to say, your content is incredible.
clock made a come back in such a weird way. i love it
I have never been so interested in a series on RUclips. Its not even amazing or anything, just so cool
love seeing things come together like this to make things work
The whell to raise the weight: when you turn that wheel the clock loses enrrgy. That is not a problem in my old german coo coo clock, not sure how it was fixed, but just as a spiral spring clock, it gains enrrgy instead of losses iit, so it won't miss clicks.
I LOVE the minute hand design from that Medieval Rack Clock design I've seen.
For the minute hand it should have been like those illusion toys where it looks like the sword goes thru the pole but it just resets so fast.
Holy shit, that’s the coolest 3D printed thing I’ve ever seen! Awesome fucking job dude!
Isn't it crazy how many of the first winding and gravity powered clocks all had to be done through precise measurements and trial and error just like this. Only they didn't have much to go off of.
I know it's probably a bit late to comment on this, but I'm just getting into 3D Printing and something I want to make is a clock where the hands move Discretely. That is ... The minute hand doesn't move until a minute goes past. Same for the hour hand. If it's 7:30, the hour hand isn't halfway between the 7 & 8, it's on the 7 until an hour has passed and then it clicks to the 8.
That's some next level engineering
Not gonna lie, that’s probably the coolest thing I’ve seen printed
The extended pendulum makes a clock difficult to house. That's why they use a one second standard. You can definately use it, but your movement would ha
I think a fancier draw weight would improve the aesthetic a lot. Even if it's just a solid brick of metal, it would still look better
Thank you very much for your demonstration and explanation!
I love this project.
As a collector of watches and some clocks, this is really cool! Horology baby!!
The issue with the longer pendulum is, that a faster beat usually makes a watch more precise. That's why most watch manufacturers switched from 18kHz to most often 28.8kHz.
I've also seen 32.768kHz.
I liked the creativity for a clock .
Became my favorate and want to but one of these types of clocks.👍
This journey you’re on is wild. With motivation and curiosity you found yourself down a rabbit hole where some how you’re coming out a clockmaker 😂
I love how many and moving parts it has could you make like a pocket watch version where it spins and stuff
Nice design! Have you considered adding a little knob to wind the spool with?
Man is creating science and art.
Wow. This is interesting. I genuinely learned how a grandfather clock works after watching your videos
Glad you were able to learn something 😀
Don't know how much pressure you would need if you made the escapement wheel larger...Keep it up your design is getting better...
Anybody that can build a clock is a genius to me.😊😊
I think it would be really satisfying to see it without the pendulum, so it just spins really fast.
made similar design in 2018 lol. It looked very much like you did, except hands were gears with digits on em
Love it.
Brilliant mechanical engineering
This is where ratio and design tech is needed which is really cool
But guess what
I suck at both of them ratio and design tech
Are… are you making a old fashion grandfather clock? My grand parents have one of these!
For me will be a plus is the bridge is maked of transparent acrylic.
I have an idea for that minute hand.
You could make multiple hands that changes after an hour, but it probably won't work
If you're going to use a weight to power it, a kettle bell would look nicer than a dumbell
I belive that using weights is likely a renewable source of power if you mix it with the battery that charges with the handle
Maybe you can use a sack like a small one add fishing weights in it for theweight
If only we had a device like this before! This is revolutionary! What will he call it??
I love following this journey
I always thought the pendulum powered the clock, not the other way around. So it's the weight that powers the clock and the pendulum, and the pendulum's job is to keep the timing regular.
You should make an entire grandfather clock housing for this clock once it's finished, of course with glass showing all the work that was put in to it.
Will it take forever? yes.
Will it cost a bit in plastic? also yes
Wouldn't it be cheaper and easier just to make one out of wood or maybe even buy one? absolutely
But you'd have a really cool 100% 3d printed (minus screws) display piece with all the mechanics on display and safe from...Well I guess dust would be the only primary issue long term.
Rn I'm so invested in this, I can't wait till i see the whole thing lol
🙏🙏🙏🙏
This is so cool, will it be available for purchase?
Minute hand doesn’t need to move, mark the minutes on the gears
Anyone who likes these should check out wooden gear clocks. It looks sorta like this clock but it’s cnc cut wood
Are you using a horology book or no? Either way, this is impressive
What a marvelous mechanism
A retrograde minute hand is an awesome idea!
Maybe you can make the pendulum where you mount something miiildly heavy at the end of a shorter stick
I glad to see him using the nodilist gear
I love non standard instrument hand rotation patterns
Almost every genius serial killers smiles to see this invention
those are called retrograde hands because they move backwards consistently. very sought after in watches because they reduce dial space and look cool as hell plus they snap back instantly so fast you cant even see it.
Awesome I was looking for the proper term! Thank you
I'd like to see it get to the point of a more traditional clock. That, and I'd also like to see it run on less than a 5lbs weight
Hmmm. I would like to make one as well. Have to just order all the parts. And I think I can make it partially electronical. Making a clockface out of LEDs. The LEDs would light up correctly on the turn of arms
Looks nice. Make a kit and I'd buy it (minus the weight and once it's done)
Please add a Huygen chain drive to your clock so it can still function while you wind it up
This is so cool, nice job!
Granted, I'm no expert on the subject, but this looks like it has the potential to be a really neat gravity powered generator.
Just casually adding one of the more desirable complications in watchmaking with the minute hand retrograde
Now it is a grandfather clock :)
Did you say that you were going to upload your STLs?
I would buy the plans and build this. Excellent work. Other additions I would do is place it in a case or have various colour schemes.
Thank you! A full wall of them would be cool :)
add a old style spring type included in emergency case
in case if that weight runs out of length during night but it still keeps ticking
also helps in maintaining clock time While resetting weight
edit. oh it's already published
Can't wait for you to finish this
Spring load the minute hand then have it skip gears in order to reset. Just an idea
You should try to make a case for it like a grandfather clock
this process is very exciting
This is so amazing! I would love to make one!! 🥰
Looks like a work of kinetic art! I love it
Thank you!
Very cool design!
