some advice my friends who are well traveled gave me is that you should never crack jokes or act overly friendly with them, they'll read too far into everything. just hand them your stuff and tell them where you're going, what you're doing, and how long you're staying. give short concise answers and leave the talking to just one person if you're in a group together

They’re just doing their jobs. They’re no bad people either. I hate it too and find their tones too much. But be in their shoes. Yes they have their own problems but they play video games for a living and can raise money for people in need. On their own time. Meanwhile the others have to go to work probably for 8-12 hours a day. And at least do something to stop illegal things. It’s not poor Jimmy. It’s unfortunate but no one is poor. They’re humans too.

Being from Canada, I have been to the US a lot. One of my first trips on my own I went over the border by greyhound bus (cheers for being poor and in college... not omg bus was terrible). We stop at the Windsor crossing which puts you just outside of the US, get out unload everything and have to go into customs. I wait in the long line, and am watching people left and right being denied entry for a variety of reason, finally it's my turn, I step up and the customs agent asks me why I'm going to school for Early Childhood Education and could I confirm my school (this freaked me out, why did they know and why did they care?) Then they wanted to know where I was going, where I was staying and how I had any acquaintances in the US. This is where it gets embarrassing see when I was in college, I was a big Harry Potter geek and had been on an online role playing game for years with people, had video chatted, we'd exchange birthday gifts, whatever... now imagine telling the customs and border guy this at like 2am, and hoping to god the let you into the country. Well lucky for me I brought a ton of documents and contact info should something like this happen, unlucky for me when they did the bag search before we could reboard the bus, my bag flipped over onto the ground sending all my stuff everywhere and I am not quite sure I really got over the border agents helping me repack my underwear... *sigh* I have travelled a lot since then to the US, and can say Jimmy some of the experiences made me want to not go back, so I totally understand your story, but don't let that experience stop you because you were epic on the stream, and you even had doc consider you and Martyn honorary Hermits which says a lot!

I'm so sorry this was part of your first visit here.
The TSA is bad enough as a citizen traveling domestically. I have a very common name that is frequently used as an alias for Bad Men®, so I always got pulled aside for "random additional screenings" (not as scary as what you went through, just annoying). The last time it happened, when it was me, in a walker, with two 80 year old women (one of whom did not seem to know where she was), I finally caved and paid the Transportation Security Agency money to "pre-approve" me to get me off the "random screening" list. When that didn't work, I had to get a redress number, which involved filling out a form and getting a litter indicating my "file at the State Department" had been updated.
    What.
I'm assuming they wanted you to bring more stuff because some criminals, historically, have traveled into the US carrying very little and then done crime. Not an excuse and not a real reason to suspect someone of wrongdoing, but a lot of what the TSA does is security theater. :(
Thanks for bearing with it and making it to the event. It wouldn't have been the same without you. I'm glad you got to experience the eclipse and other things afterwards, as well. :)
