I grew up in NY & this game was a huge deal because so many Irish and Italian people lived there and that Italy team was absolutely awesome talent wise & no one gave Ireland a chance and when they won scoring maybe the goal of the tournament it's hard to describe - it was just an absolutely fantastic event
Oh ah Paul McGrath!?! Oh ah Paul McGrath!?! And I’ll never forget Packie Bonnar saving that penalty in the 1990 World Cup!?! Haha and without even winning a game in normal time!?!
This wasn't the big shock some people think Ireland had beaten Holland and Germany away in friendlies and had a very strong team full of leaders . They went into the tournament in great shape .
+Inge Fossen England Played the 4-4-2 in 1996, Ireland did it in 2002 and Utd did it in 1999. I would say it was an end of a generation of proper british football.
But how often did Ireland beat world power teams at the world? Even if they had beaten Germany and Netherlands in friendlies, its not too often they beat a big team at a world cup where the whole world is able to see. That's what made that defeat of Italy special
As a Villa fan in the early 90s we all had a soft spot for Ireland. Townsend, Staunton, Houghton, McGrath all legends and the backbone of some iconic sides and unforgettable games.
Yes Paul McGrath was a giant, along with Keane, Bonner,Coyne, Staunton, Sheridan, Houghton, Townsend, Irwin, Babb and Phelan. These giants caused one of the biggest upsets in the history of the World Cup.

Great... I'm Italian and for sure I can't forget that day... We were quite shocked, but Ireland deserved to win, and so they did... Fantastic team, prepared to fight... Hope to see you in Poland next summer... Greetings!
I watched almost every match of this World Cup and this one was one of my favorite. But have also to admit that this game was the best for whole tournament in my opinion. What a level Ireland showed! What a day for Paul McGrath! It has to be the match of Ireland of whole history. Amazing.. Just amazing.
Seamus Gallagher I don’t agree. They were great players, but few people outside british islands know them. Robbie Keane 70 international goals and all the world know him.
@@starman633 Robbie Keane was our greatest goal scorer, but no way the greatest player. Roy Keane is easily the most famous Irish footballer of all time, so your logic doesn't even hold up.

Oh I wish Ireland were in the World Cup this year.. such a shame the team aren't good enough... we'll get there again some day!! It just boosts morale of the country so much which is very much needed right now.
Ireland fully deserved to win this game but despite this setback and several others Italy showed their metal and still got to the final and very nearly won it.

Unforgettable game. What was also unforgettable was the Mexican referee that ejected one of the best Italian soccer players of all time after a few minutes of play. Tommy Coyne played every game (anyone remember him) Jack had some bizzarre selections and favourites. I did not like his style one bit and we scored so few goals and played such awful football for a team with such talented players. Precious few good footballing memories as exemplified by these clips. A flukey goal, McGrath’s defensive brilliance and a rare passage of proper football culminating in John Sheridan hitting the crossbar. Italia 90 was even worse.. anyone remember the 0-0 v Egypt or anything about the England game apart from Sheedy’s goal. The Dutch game and Quinn’s goal from yet another boot up the field by Bonnar and a mistake by the Netherland’s defender. The horrendous game v Romania where McCarthy constantly bullied and fouled one the most gifted players to have played the game (Gheorghe Hagi) and of course The Penalties. The 2002 qualifying campaign and the subsequent finals saw us play far better football. The game away to Holland was probably the best we have ever played . We also played some decent enough stuff in the finals. Forget about The Trappatoni years, that was turgid. Euro 2016 had some good moments (thanks Wes Hoolihan) and now we are minnows . Any Ireland manager can only dream of having such talent as his disposal like that which Saint Jack had (but chose to ignore it).
Of the starting team here: Packie Bonner; Dennis Irwin; Roy Keane; Stephen Staunton. I would add Paul McGrath to the list, even though he was born in England, he grew up in Ireland from six weeks old, unlike many of the English-born players. So actually many of the better players. Niall Quinn would also have started only for snapping his ACL a couple of months before the tournament.
