I would say one of the big differences between go-bots and transformers was the animation. In transformers they animated it to what actually would make them look better. Even if it meant it didn’t look like the toy. Go-bots animated them to look almost exactly like the toy. To the point in the show if a car flipped over you saw the robot head under there just like the toy would have

Considering that before this Hannah Barbara mostly animated run cycles in front of the same table and chair for 20 minutes per episode, I don't think they did half bad. The cartoon was fun enough, I used to watch it at least as much as I did Transformers, and I had a bunch of GoBots to go along with my TFs because they were like $3 and I could buy 4 of them for the price of one Transformer, and I had to stretch my allowance as far as it could go.

Yes! Gobots had terrible artwork and goofy animation. It was basically PlaySchool Transformers. Meanwhile, The Mighty Orbots was gorgeous, much higher quality, and far cooler. There is no justice.
@Philip Wood it's like the Ghostbusters. When Filmation came out with thier Ghostbusters cartoon (The one with the Ape in it) it was based on the original version from the 70's. However, everyone saw the Egon/ Slimer Ghostbusters as the REAL DEAL.
It's really no small wonder why Transformers ended up being the much bigger franchise at the time over Gobots, as the toys, comics and animated series were much better received by kids by a substantial margin. They do both have a common origin as imported mech toylines from Japan (Diaclone/Micro Man/Change for TF and Machine Robo with Gobots respectively) and the general theme of transforming robots from the far reaches of the galaxy. However, even though Tonka tried they just couldn't compete effectively against the massive wave Hasbro was making with the toys and Sunbow in conjunction with Marvel Productions as the animated series dominated the airwaves among the other popular cartoons of the era. Gobots despite their efforts just simply couldn't rival that unprecedented success and it shows even to this day. Simply put, Transformers was an absolute monster of a franchise at the time and the competitors just couldn't match. I liken it to what occurred with Pokemon and Digimon in the late '90s/early 2000's, as they were both series about mystical creatures of different shapes and sizes. Though by every standard by which the two can be compared Pokemon was heads and shoulders above in every way and the former couldn't come even close in popularity and pure appeal.
Which is odd to me. Digimon seemed like a more grown up version of poki since the characters could talk and their powers were digitally based. The concept just makes more logical sense that apparently can be the downfall for some shows. Most mainstream shows are "ripoffs" of another idea or don't actually serve the main purpose of entertainment but to sale related products (toys/cards/minis/games). At least Digi was one of the good ones.

DC never had Gobots. The only Gobot comics I know if was in IDW, done by the same guy that did that wonky, cracked-out Transformer/G.I. Joe mini-series.
It was easier to identify with GoBots. For example, Cop-Tur's conversion was literally just to turn forward 90 degrees and sort of tuck his arms under his torso. So any kid could transform like Cop-Tur! You just need a sword with 4 blades or something and you're a helicopter! Cy-Kill was even easier. His superpower was to kneel.
Thats actually the main reason i couldnt get into it. The designs were to simplistic. Not much thought put into it. Which might be ok for a toddler. But Gobots design looks basically like a car just stood up. Or a robot just bent over to become a bike.
RW2996 It was hard to get into, because Gobots were compared to Transformers. When I did not compare the two I actually enjoyed Gobots. Gobots was like learning the alphabet, then Transformers was the expression of a full thought. Gobots definitely did not have much creativity from designs, transformation, names. The Hanna Barbera animation did not help, but if you see the Japanese version, it blows away the Hanna Barbera version.
alanguages I think you're right. Knowing myself ,im sure if Transformers weren't there to compare with , I would have Been More open to the Gobots. The robot to vehicle transformation aspect plus having a backstory to go along with it, would have interest me. Transformers just did it better.

Gobots or Mighty Machine Men ( In Australia ) were awesome in the 80s . The toys were exceptional. Transformers was obviously better but Gobots still belong to the classic era of great kids cartoons an toys. Better some of the shit they come up with today
Tic-tac was the only GoBot I owned, not counting the bootleg Cy-Kill I got for Christmas as a kid. Quite strange why they were named that way and why they chose the name “Puzzler” as the name of their combined form. They do look a lot better in the toys though.
@@MattyIcecubes Tell me about it. A dump truck named "Dumper" and a firetruck named "Pumper"- any teenager will view them as references to... naughty activity... and any adult (like the Tonka employees who named the GoBots) should remember how they were as teenagers, and vetoed those names.

Yeah! Gobot's transformations were very simple and the animation very fidel to them.
Lmao!!!...i remember i thought i could transform like scooter..i'd lay on the floor on my back,my arms together straight up above my head, fists together, thumbz outward as handles and knees together to my chest as the seat..thx for the memories!!
Kup, Hot Rod, look!
*Dollar Store Devastator…*
If this was redesigned and modernized, I think it would be a good show
Please no. God no.
Machine Robo
In other words, if this was a completely different show, it would be better.
Simply watch Machine Robo :p
Challenge of the gobots is a classic show, brings back great memories.
I think the best episodes are The battle for Gobotron and The Gobotron saga.
Stephen Langley you should really keep stuff like that to yourself
Ultra Zod was a good episode
@@anthonybernero9720 sorry Anthony but he's right, yeah we know all about it gobots supposedly being the " transformers for poor kids" but they were still cool. Even though I would clearly tell u back in the day , in a fight with Optimus and leader1 prime would win hands down! Same thing with Megatron and Cykill. They both had their ups and downs. Gobots could shoot from their fists, too cool! Sorry you can't take that from them. No need for guns. On the other hand transformers made guns the coolest thing since Terminator! Transformer could fly by NO VISIBLE MEANS, like superman. Something that irritated me badly in the vein of sci-fi and realisim , while gobots most always had jet thrusters blazing out of their feet. YES the gobots movie licked NUTS!!! Hairy ones!! Badly!!! I won't bite my tongue about it!! Sadden and pissed me off royally!! While the real transformer movie from 86' is STILL legend today!! As a kid I had and Still have all my transformers and Gobots! As far as quality, let me tell you the only two gobots who ever gave me problems were tank and fitor. For some stupid reason they both kept losing their right arms!!😭😵😫. Otherwise all of my gobots are in good condition and that includes rescue the guardian ambulance I taped to the ceiling fan and he came loose and took a mach1 trip across my bedroom into the living room into the wall!! (Last time I did that!) But yeah man don't knock da gobots. They as far as I remember we're the first ones to have real rubbing tires😁. No they were not as powerful as the Boyz from Cybertron but they were just as coool! Crasher was my favorite!! She'll take on wild rider any day!! Till the rest of the Boyz show up 😭😁😁
And NO Cykill's Nicotine teeth didn't help his tough guy image!! 😂😂😖
this was the best robot show next to tranzor z in the 80s miss it so much
during our childhood...its good enough
loved the gobots.
It was an escape from transformers.
@Burns me up. saw the guy throwing out the comic book
i'll be honest, this had better animation than the transformers.
Some of the Gobots had really stupid names. They called their combiner "Puzzler" because you had to assemble them like a puzzle
@@MattyIcecubes LOL "some"?
@@macethorns1168 Most but not all. Some had cool names
Where can I get other episodes, particularly number 20 ‘the quest for Roguestar’ ?
It has been a random memory I’ve had for about 33 years and I’ve finally managed to track down the episode number that has the scene I have somehow remembered since being a kid.
Gobots accuracy to the toys was probably its downfall though I liked that about them.
I love how it does not have color pollution that cartoons have nowadays.
Classic if you remember this you love cartoons.
The other ghostbusters of transformers
I remember watching this show every day after school. It came on a few hours after Transformers on a local channel. The cartoon definitely didn’t help their cause in terms of getting kids to buy GoBots. Shame really because they did have some cool figures in the lineup.
I loved Gobots to death....until Transformers came out. They were so much better and I lost all interest in Gobots. So did everyone else
Long time no see them. I did not remember all the main characters.
Why does that one guy look like the offspring of a motorcycle and Santa Claus
Menasors little brother
Fun, fun, fun, FUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNTASTIC clip!
These combiners put the Constructicons to shame. What's more they've not sentient like the Autobot-Decepticon combiner teams.
This is so much worse than I remember. I love it
Love it!! Brings back memories!!!
robert ingram no burn it in hell
I recalled how I saw Beast Wars first, Gobots second, and finally G1 in the 90s.
Now I'm glad I remained a Beast Wars fan after seeing how toxic Transformers G1's fanbase was when I was enjoying Go-Bots more than that overrated TF G1 show itself.
This stuff is so intense! It’s almost like a Michael Bay film
Damn. Why you insult the show like that?
This crap is better than Bayformers
@@ShahPhilLeotardo no, no it isn't. The designs don't look good and they don't have the production quality or intensity of those movies.
Is that suppose to be an endorsement or an insult?
Sheesh, now I'm glad I was born in the 2000's after seeing these troll comments...
I didn't realized this animation is so poor back then until now.
This is why Machine Robo: Revenge of Cronos is better.
@@whocares9873 Yes, it's excellent. As is Battle Hackers and the Stol spin off series.
