Anybody watching this video will be here because, like me, they're now on a new phone and the authenticator didn't sync - because Google designed it that way but do not tell you that. If you're VERY lucky you still have the old phone and didn't wipe it yet. Otherwise, most people will be finding out way too late and there's absolutely no way of knowing until it's too late and you have lost everything. So, in short, this video is clear, concise and superb, if you can go back in time. Bravo, Google.
Most people buy new phone when they have issue with the prior, it is a huge flaw that you can't sign in to your authenticator or transfer it to new phone without old phone. Prime example of security shouldn't be too much that it becomes problem in itself for authentic user.
Keep the codes on BOTH phones and keep the old phone in the safe with your printed google 10 emergency keys. Then if your new phone breaks you can get into any account in 5 minutes not hours or days. Or.. Take a photo of the QR code the old phone generated. keep that in a safe place.
This video seems to assume that everyone has an iPhone. They don't. Please update the title to specify that this is for iPhones, or even mention whether this is the same process for Android.
A question: Right at the beginning 7 or 8 seconds in that first pic you show of the two codes on your old phone, how do I bring that up on my old phone? I have a 5+ year old MotoG on Cricket Wireless with Google Authenticator in it that I use for two cases, a personal crypto account and accessing work accounts at my job. I am about to buy a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, and want to be sure I can and know how to do this transfer. I plan to switch to T-Mobile, and not sure if I can keep my old phone number or will need to get a new one, and not sure if and how changing phone numbers affects this issue as well, maybe you have thoughts on that? Other? Thanks so much. I also have a 6 year old Dell Inspiron laptop and am about to buy a new Dell XPS laptop, and I have not idea yet if and how to transfer my Google Authenticator between those two laptops either, but that's a day 2 for me, unless there is good reason to get the laptop first and the phone later.
Why do people say not to use Google Authentication for 2FA? Can anyone tell me what secured multi-factor authentication with biometric option I can use instead? Which one is more secure (not hackable), Google Authenticator, Authy, LastPass, or Microsoft Authenticator?
My problem is my old phone has a broken screen (which is why I had to replace it) so I cannot use it, but the 2FA codes keep being sent to my old phone. When I try to set it up on my new phone it asks for the 2FA code from my old phone which I cannot use.
This is all good and simpley, but google needs to find an alternative solution to transferring authenticator codes to new phone. My old phone screen is all messed up(internal LCD leak, no cracks on phone in solid case with screen protector), so can't scan the QR code needed to move to codes to new phone. They should at least create unique keys for that situation. I tried casting my screen using chromecast, but for the Auth app the screen with the QR code won't display on the cast screen. So frustrating
I lost my phone iam trying to create in new phone there was no option showing for change phone option it's showing change authenticater app what i should do ??
Exactly! and.... I have my old phone, and the dumb app, 5.0 version (says only need 4.4 or higher to do this) , when you push the 3 dots, there IS NO transfer option anyways, so it's impossible. Even if you have your old phone and went back in time, it still may not have worked, this is so stupid, I have to use my old phone THREE PHONES AGO!! to get an authenticator app code, just moronic.
There's one flaw with this method. If you're an Android user you are required to login to your new phone with Google. And you have to be signed in to even download the authenticator app from the app store. How are you supposed to sign in on your new phone when it will ask for 2FA first? Most people trade in their old phones so the new one gets a discount.
I have my old phone but got a new number, and when i go to upgrade authenticator, it needs me to upgrade the iphone software, so i did, but then it said, storage issue. So i made storage and it still wont fully upgrade my phone. Found out i have corrupted data and the only thing to do is reset the phone, but the thing is, i need that auntheticator to not sign out because if i erase everything, and try to sign back in, it will ask me to verify its me and send it to the old number which isnt in use anymore. So wtf. Ill basically be locked out forever. Wtf google. Figure this tf out.
@somabanik5375 google authenticator allows automatic backup of your codes to your google account. I think it's an option I turned on. If I lost my phone I would use another phone under my google account and reinstall google authenticator.
yesterday i drowned my iphone in a lake. now i have new iphone and i just cant get back on the google authentification codes that i need very seriously. i have code on my papper ( the long one) i followed the steps in many tutorials - google accounts-security etc..there is no links whit authenticatior at my gmail.. i dont understand what to do... sos. sos...
I’m really sorry to hear this. Have you tried restoring your phone from an iCloud or iTunes backup? Otherwise I’d suggest try contacting Google. Sorry - I wish you the best of luck with it.

Perfect! thanks!

Thank you 👍
please make a video about Apple s SET UP VERIFICATION CODE which is replacement for authy and other similar apps.
Is it okay to have google authenticator on multiple devices, so you always have a back up incase one phone doesn't work or you lose your phone?
Does your Sim need to be in your new phone?

Can this method be used to share Authenticator access with a spouse on their phone?
What if you just reset your phone???? R all my codes lost? For good? Cuz that's insane!
i dont see 'export accounts' on the old phone, as the app has been updated and i cant find out how to transfer it to a new phone

Agreed. I think the whole 2FA solution needs a rethink because far too many people get locked out of their accounts when upgrading their phone. 👍

Google Authenticator also does not back up into iCloud. It’s not available in the list of apps to back up within my iPhone 11 Pro Max.
But he says its does? 1:30
