Honestly, which surfer was the funnest to watch? Which one was the smoothest with the loosest and fastest turns that connected so well? Slater without a doubt. You couldn't have underscored him any more than that.
Slater wants to go out on a high note! Thought that he was going to retire after winning pipeline, but who’s going to retire after winning the first event of the year? Knowing that John John has the jersey number 12 you know he’s got a win one more title. But that vision is getting out of sight so he’s hoping to try to get wildcard into and win one more event to hang up the jersey. I’m sure of that. Definitely hoping to get into the final Tahiti with John John. Would be an all-time banger.
I’ve been a bit mystified at the judging this year. I know it’s not an easy job. Best I can gather they are not scoring floaters, cutbacks, roundhouses... they want to see the rail gouge with big spray. Even airs not really being scored see Medina’s tail high move at Bells that didn’t even make it in his top 2.
Yeah agreed. They just want everyone to be Ethan which is silly versus if that's all that is scored, that is all we are going to get.@@springfieldbearpatrol2937
People seem confused about Kelly’s status. He’s not officially retired as a pro surfer. The WSL has a mid-season cut and that sends the lower ranked CT (Championship Tour) level surfers back to the QS (qualifying series). Thus they cannot continue on the 2024 World Tour or compete for a World Title - but they do have the right to try to re-qualify for 2025 via the Challenger events. In this case it’s like Babe Ruth being sent to the minor leagues. Kelly was also granted two wildcards for CT events remaining (Fiji and Tahiti) by virtue of being a former Title holder. Personally I still enjoy watching Kelly and will be rooting for him to requalify, but he doesn’t prove anything to anybody.
I don't understand why is Slater competing on a CS event 1 week after the retirement announcement. I get the world champs heat.. I get the wild cards for the CT. But this seems wrong. I'm actually a Slater fan and for me HE IS the GOAT, bus a CS normal heat 1 week after the announcement and all the news?
Beneath him for sure but at Margaret River he said he was planning to be in Australia anyway for another two weeks. Prob figured what’s so bad about snapper rocks with 3 other surfers?
Looking back yea I'm afraid so, Kelly was ingaging, working the wave noticeably at a more intense level. We know judges can miss some, it's ashamed they missed this one so badly thou. Even removing the "fan favorite" filter it wasn't close. I'm sure the winner didn't want to win that way either 🐿
dumpty surfs good, but he lifts his board up and places it down and does like a weird wheelie just before he goes to the rebound, i’ve always seen this in contest here in florida too.. and my friends will think i’m hating , but im not at all, and this heat he is doin it more than even alot of other heats.. idk maybe some thinks its good but to me its not flow , and its a hesitation instead of a smooth full rebound , or am i trippin?
This some GRADE A BS... WSL judging went to pot long ago, and here's another prime example. The skill it takes to surf that smooth and technical is what makes Slater the GOAT. KELLY, PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS SURFING, START A NEW TOUR!
Get Slater on a DHD instead of experimenting with equipment and he may win again. Other guys are hungrier af & have good boards. Slater needed another wave.
Ha. Or a CI. He’s been on these smaller boards for years and he looks like he’s having fun, and they have such a short rail line it allows tight arcs - I do notice he bleeds speed on occasion. I think most of us old heads are used to iconic Kelly on longer boards with the quick logo.
What does Slater have to do to win a heat? What is the WSL criteria for judges? Don't they take into consideration flow, power, grace, fluidity or is just repetition and quantity of maneuvers. I don't understand the judging. Kelly killed out there, and schooled everyone on the beach, in the water or at home on their computer.
kelly is trying so hard and the judges are “forcing him off the tour!” and that’s the worst way to treat the goat! and power is obviously not what these other guys have, they are great surfers. BUT we ALL see what we all see and saw, read the comments!!
Judges and kooks that call this bull shit sham of a contest not why would you say how hard Kelly is ripping and then back the judge s with their bias scores that's it am out WSL no more Fing kooks the whole lot of ya stay out of Hawaii
Super heavy waves for worlds best competitive surfers. If I just listen to the commentary I would think they surfing 8 to 12 ft but no they are surfing 2 ft
There is absolutely no difference between the worlds best competitive surfers surfing crap waves like this and any good amateur surfers you can see down the beach any day of the week.
Small wave selection, less critical sections. Judges got it right IMO. Similar situation to gabby at bells. Floaters and round houses are not critical maneuvers…
I bought a Slater Designs flat earth on sale a few years ago and its the worst board I've ever surfed zero drive. The LFT construction is truly awful. If he still surfed Channel islands who knows.
There's young guy's out there trying their guts out to make a go in pro surfing competing against a multi million dollar guy who has nothing else to prove or gain from the sport and potentially take away their ability to advance. WTF!
Most of the top pros are millionaire even the ones on the Challenger series. Kelly has earned his right to be in EVERY contest and is still RIPPING. I've watched this video over and over without comments/sound . Roughly estimated each surfers manovoers and scores based on official WSL criteria's.... Kelly's waves score make no sense!!!?? Maybe juges stressed out 🤔 (i know Kelly doesn't care and he is here to have some fun) but clearly Sl8 really got robbed in this heat😮 I don't understand 🤯 🫵🏻@WSL Call a heat reset!!!
Slater underscored
That's for sure the most obvious Kelly got robbed case ever 😅! A 5 years old groms panel from your local beach break would have made better job 🙈
agreed -- Oscar flaps his arms around too much -- Slater's style looks better than the 3 surfers
Been happening for years.
Just what I thought!
F*** you WSL slater surfed that wave so perfectly non of those other guys could have made the turns he was. MAJORLY UNDERSCORED
f*** you brah he was lucky to get a 6
Judges. We have a problem! Kelly underscored .
Kelly heavily underscored
But I mean for a guy to come out of nowhere and just start on the QS at 52, that's pretty good
@@bobjohns-qt5uc Yeah I like the 'out of nowhere' part. If you take who he is/was out, yep, that's not a bad QS result re age.

Nah Berry was better tbh
@@osvnisaneek8254 yes but kelly still underscored its no news
Ethan would got a 9 for that 6,17 wave

Kelly underscored for sure
those roundhouses like no other! so underscored, wtf.......,..
Kelly connected his turns si good,so ripped off ,skills where so high 😢
how did slater only get a 6 on that wave?
Slater won that heat in my eyes....amazing turns with speed and flow
Funny to compare slater’s 6.17 with Oscar’s 5. Not sure how those were even close.
Kelly. Foam climb was pretty 🌺🌿

Richie Lovett is such an aussie homer. He always plays up every little wiggle an aussie does..& picks at the non aussie rides.

slats did well, must say. Those cutties are the bomb. Not as much spray off the top as the others guys on the vertical turns, but solid.
