Personally for riding to the shops and filling my panniers with food and going home 15.5MPH is fine for my purposes and at age 70 having not been on a bike or an E-bike for a long period of time, I feel speed is less of an encumberment and safety is my paramount need, especially climbing a very steep winding hill.
Great video. I’ve been thinking of doing this too but I was looking for a waterproof switch so it could be used exposed to the elements. Just need to cut a very small hole in the battery cover.

Consider running the wire through the hole at the front of the frame with all the other wires to the controller etc. Another option I considered was running the wire backwards out the bottom of the seat post and then mount the switch inside the square section on the seat post.
I've been riding higher power ebikes for about 7 years now and never had any issues with the law. Ride sensible, and as long as you're not going stupidly fast you'll be ok. Some of the Lycra clad guys can reach 40mph so I don't think the police worry much about bikes going 20-25mph... so long as you're (ghost) peddling! Just using the throttle may bring unwanted attention.

That is a false sense of security…All it take is one zealous bored copper and you could lose your bike, get six points and a £5000 fine (each moped non compliance part is fined separately…no m/c crash helmet, no insurance, no registration, construction and use regs etc). We SHOULD be able to ride these legally, but can’t. It’s your risk, but make no mistake…it IS a risk.
a fantastic idea mate, and yeah i agree its more "with in the law" with the switch hidden behind the battery as you've done there as like you say you physically have to stop the bike and remove any power supply to change mode, so with how the law is worded it would appear your in it if you were stopped say by police a simple test of your max speed proves you are not breaking, glad to see your healing up nicely, id say teeth need to re-mortgage house for a filling these days lol

Perfect solution for the uk roads as like you said its not accessable on the fly, this is a perfect mod for me to do on my Kommoda i just need to sort the controller out with cyrusher, I have 2 kommoda's 1 for my wife and they won't go last 22.5mph 😞 derestricted, the wifes is fine as she doesn't want hers to go fast so its limited to the 15.5 but not me lol, i like going off road and it feels so stable at high speed ( 37mph down hill ) gravity was my friend lol.
Possibly a useful point for some…. The law on full power throttles was introduced 1st jan 2016 and bikes older than that can have them. My Pedego beach cruiser has a label showing it was made in 2015 and has its throttle from new.

To me, that seems to be within the spirit of the law to have a public and private driving mode, but having it accessible on the handlebar would make it too tempting / easy to switch on the go and quickly switch it back if pulled over.

A few weeks ago, I bought the Cyrusher Bandit and its been an absolute joy to have, I've wanted to install a thumb throttle onto it however due to mixed opinions from different sources including bike websites and even police themselves, I am left unsure about whether or not its legal to have a thumb throttle on the bike and I don't want to risk having the ebike seized, what do you know regarding the legality of restricted ebikes with throttles?

its 15mph on/off road to be an ebike, if theres a way to enable off road mode then its not an ebike... . but... if your on private land thats gated then they cant touch you but if its unrestricted then your (legally) riding an unlicenced motorcycle off road, and thats ok, you wont require insurance unless public can wander on ie ramblers/dog walkers/pizzs guy, but it may then require msva.....
good film Joe. this whole legal restriction is stupid. a high powered car is legal if it sticks to the speed limit. the law needs to catch idiots not sensible bike riders with illegal bikes. but good fix... im going to do this as my riding is on and off road.

Less traffic, less pollution, less parking, more affordable travel, the benefits are endless. However we live in a hilly country, for many, 250w just isn’t enough power to make e-bikes a practical transport solution! I glad you found my video helpful.
I think the point is that they are legal/not legal as e-bikes, there is ather clasifications that that bike falls under withouth the limit. In that clasification you are required to register the vehicle as a moped and adhear to the laws regarding operation of a moped. In country where I live (Slovenia EU), e-bikes with limit of 250W and 25km/h (15.5mph) and mopeds limited to 25km/h have to adhear to laws regarding cycling. As a cyclist I realy dont feel comfortable with heavier and faster vehicles on bike lanes, even mopeds are an issue, especially when they come down the wrong way. The issue there is not the limited speed (if it even is limited) the issue is the size and weight of the vehicle. A more poerfull vehicle is haevier and in an event of a crash can cause more damage. That is why as oposed to cars, bikes are not required insurance, because the damage a cyclist can do, is not that high that an average person could not cover it out of pocket withougth insurance.
Hi, great video, thanks! I'm on the cusp of ordering a Cyrusher and also fitting a switch, however a question for you please. The point of fitting a switch that is accessible whilst riding would be to discretely switch it off if the police were ahead stopping bikes. Would you know if the switch works dynamically? ie: will the bike's computer accept the mode change whilst running? or must the bike be powered-off or worse still, the battery disconnect before the switch is used to change the mode? ie: Does the bike's computer read the speed limiter once at boot-up and stay in that mode until powered down/up again? or can the mode be changed in-flight? I tried asking Cyrusher's pre-sales folks but they didn't know. You might have tried it before fixing the switch in place? I'm not into speed, I'm fine with peddling; but being a bit on the heavy side, some extra power might be nice to have at times.

Cyrusher provide a sticker that says 250W which should be applied to the motor. That's good enough for me and as Martin wrote above, so long as one rides sensibly and pedals, one shouldn't draw too much attention to oneself. How effective applying a 250W sticker is, who knows. The Police can read all about Cyrusher as we can.

Yes you’re right. has been raised and discussed in other comments. Cyrusher don’t ship the bike with the throttle fitted. I had it fitted so I could mess around with it and film more easily.
You can actually have a throttle fitted as long as it is restricted to 6kph, This is to assist people who have difficulty starting due to injury or disability. A handy part of the law I don't think many know about not even ebike shops.
You can have a thumb throttle in the UK but it's restricted to around 6 mph, so not necessarily illegal. I for one don't think the police would stop you if they saw you going fast as long as it's not stupidly fast. The only problem is if you have an accident where someone else is evolved and police are called. Then there might be a problem
The fact is with popularity greatly increasing & everybody modding e-bikes to outperform small cc motorbikes on public highways ...it is inevitable the law will step in at some point and legislate.
Isn't this a bit pointless? The bike is illegal in the UK anyway as it has a throttle. Isn't it? And why have the switch? The police can't tell if the bike is restricted or if it isn't.
Hi Den, thanks for the comment. You’re right, the throttle isn’t legal. That’s something I’ve added to have a play with. It’ll need to be removed to make it legal (Cyrusher don’t ship the bike with this fitted). The police can’t tell and your very unlikely to have any issues with an unrestricted bike. However, rules is rules! If the worst did happen and you had an accident where someone else got hurt, I’m not sure how you would fair in court if you were found to be riding an illegal bike. It’s up to the individual. Pointless to you, but useful to others.
You really need to remove the throttle, or at least disable it. To be classed as a peddle assist ebike. Not that I really care how you ride it. But my bike is road legal, and you need to peddle it.
Don’t think your legal with a throttle, so maybe speed wise, but definitely not legal with your throttle, not that I’m bothered as I have mine on as well.

Mais s'emmerder ensuite à rester à 25km/h sur chemin rural, là, c'est de la connerie. Donc si le législateur était un peu futé, il adopterait le principe de deux modes sur les vélos : un bridé pour la ville, et un autre pour les champs. Ensuite si vous utilisez le mode débridé en ville et que vous faites un accident, là vous êtes à 300% responsable par défaut, donc vous payez au prix fort votre connerie, ce qui est parfaitement normal... En tout cas sur le lankeleisi x3000 max, c'est déjà beaucoup plus "pensé" pour ce double usage : vous pouvez adapter la limitation directement sur le display. Donc vous laissez à 25 sur la route avec un moteur, et vous pouvez augmenter une fois sur sentier battu avec les deux. Ça prend 10s, pas besoin d'outil ou de bricolage comme ici, ça ne gêne personne, ça respecte l'esprit de la Loi - où est le problème ? Il n'y a que la poignée d'accélération qui n'est normalement pas autorisée. Mais là aussi, le législateur devrait autoriser son usage sur vélo électrique parce que c'est juste logique. C'est idiot de devoir forcer le pédalage au feu rouge, surtout pour des gens qui ont un certain âge, et qui font du vélo électrique pour garder un peu d'activité physique. Pouvoir avoir une poignée d'accélération pour aider au démarrage, c'est quand même un confort non négligeable qui évite de se casser les genoux, surtout sur des vélos de type fat bike qui ont quand même plus de 30kg. Bref, on a une fois encore des législateurs à la ramasse, autant en France qu'au R.U.. Et c'est dommage parce que ce genre de vélo inciterait beaucoup plus les gens à faire de l'exercice physique, ce qui est aussi bon pour les finances de santé...
It wouldn't be fast and legal in the same sentence, if you are using the bypass switch with peddle assist then I cant see how this is possible unless you are using a hand throttle then its illegal and you would need tax and insurance and registered, you say its ok on private land but you know that's just rhuse to do otherwise.
You’re right on the throttle. I should have qualified that. Not sure what you’re on about with regard to private land… you can do whatever you want on your own land or land where you have permission from the land owner to use 🤷
Sadly no matter what mods you have made….That bike is STILL ILLEGAL because it has a 48 volt battery, the regulations stipulate a 36v maximum . Also, the Department of Transport has made it clear that tampering with inbuilt restrictions also render the machine illegal. The law is stupid and a legacy of an old EU directive, but there it is at the moment.
I'm guessing the bike warranty is now void??.....also 'insurance?.....what insurance have you got?....is it part of your car insurance?....hate to hear you found out about your lack of road insurance while on the way to a police station ...or hospital.?....you tend to give to many"i thinks"...instead of hard facts!!!. as far as I know, changing a new controller may sort out the speed issue.

The law on throttles has a max on 3.5mph and is used just for setting off

That’s a great question. I honestly don’t know the answer. I’ll test the idea and let you know. It may be a couple of weeks before I get to it though.

You don't even need a switch you can just twist the wire together

You will still have the sticker or plate on the bike that says it's a 750 watt motor. So they may get you there.

Any electric bike that does not meet the EAPC rules is classed as a motorcycle or moped and needs to be registered and taxed. You’ll need a driving licence to ride one and you must wear a crash helmet.
Getting vehicle approval for your electric bike
An electric bike must be type approved if either:
it can be propelled without pedalling (a ‘twist and go’ EAPC)
it does not meet the EAPC rules
This should have been done by the manufacturer or importer before you bought it. If it’s been type approved, it will have a plate showing its type approval number.

Yes you’re right. has been raised and discussed in other comments. Cyrusher don’t ship the bike with the throttle fitted. I had it fitted so I could mess around with it and film more easily.
You can actually have a throttle fitted as long as it is restricted to 6kph, This is to assist people who have difficulty starting due to injury or disability. A handy part of the law I don't think many know about not even ebike shops.
The thumb throttle alone makes it illegal for use on uk roads.
You can have a thumb throttle in the UK but it's restricted to around 6 mph, so not necessarily illegal. I for one don't think the police would stop you if they saw you going fast as long as it's not stupidly fast. The only problem is if you have an accident where someone else is evolved and police are called. Then there might be a problem
The fact is with popularity greatly increasing & everybody modding e-bikes to outperform small cc motorbikes on public highways ...it is inevitable the law will step in at some point and legislate.

Isn't this a bit pointless? The bike is illegal in the UK anyway as it has a throttle. Isn't it? And why have the switch? The police can't tell if the bike is restricted or if it isn't.

You’re right, the throttle isn’t legal. That’s something I’ve added to have a play with. It’ll need to be removed to make it legal (Cyrusher don’t ship the bike with this fitted).
The police can’t tell and your very unlikely to have any issues with an unrestricted bike. However, rules is rules! If the worst did happen and you had an accident where someone else got hurt, I’m not sure how you would fair in court if you were found to be riding an illegal bike.
It’s up to the individual. Pointless to you, but useful to others.

You really need to remove the throttle, or at least disable it. To be classed as a peddle assist ebike. Not that I really care how you ride it. But my bike is road legal, and you need to peddle it.

Ça fait plaisir de voir que la législation est complètement conne des deux côtés de la Manche. Attention : je ne dis pas que limiter à 25km/h en ville soit une mauvaise chose, bien au contraire : c'est normal, ça évite les accidents graves et ça respecte les autres usagers, donc rien à redire là-dessus. Mais s'emmerder ensuite à rester à 25km/h sur chemin rural, là, c'est de la connerie. Donc si le législateur était un peu futé, il adopterait le principe de deux modes sur les vélos : un bridé pour la ville, et un autre pour les champs. Ensuite si vous utilisez le mode débridé en ville et que vous faites un accident, là vous êtes à 300% responsable par défaut, donc vous payez au prix fort votre connerie, ce qui est parfaitement normal... En tout cas sur le lankeleisi x3000 max, c'est déjà beaucoup plus "pensé" pour ce double usage : vous pouvez adapter la limitation directement sur le display. Donc vous laissez à 25 sur la route avec un moteur, et vous pouvez augmenter une fois sur sentier battu avec les deux. Ça prend 10s, pas besoin d'outil ou de bricolage comme ici, ça ne gêne personne, ça respecte l'esprit de la Loi - où est le problème ? Il n'y a que la poignée d'accélération qui n'est normalement pas autorisée. Mais là aussi, le législateur devrait autoriser son usage sur vélo électrique parce que c'est juste logique. C'est idiot de devoir forcer le pédalage au feu rouge, surtout pour des gens qui ont un certain âge, et qui font du vélo électrique pour garder un peu d'activité physique. Pouvoir avoir une poignée d'accélération pour aider au démarrage, c'est quand même un confort non négligeable qui évite de se casser les genoux, surtout sur des vélos de type fat bike qui ont quand même plus de 30kg. Bref, on a une fois encore des législateurs à la ramasse, autant en France qu'au R.U.. Et c'est dommage parce que ce genre de vélo inciterait beaucoup plus les gens à faire de l'exercice physique, ce qui est aussi bon pour les finances de santé...
It wouldn't be fast and legal in the same sentence, if you are using the bypass switch with peddle assist then I cant see how this is possible unless you are using a hand throttle then its illegal and you would need tax and insurance and registered, you say its ok on private land but you know that's just rhuse to do otherwise.
You’re right on the throttle. I should have qualified that. Not sure what you’re on about with regard to private land… you can do whatever you want on your own land or land where you have permission from the land owner to use 🤷
Sadly no matter what mods you have made….That bike is STILL ILLEGAL because it has a 48 volt battery, the regulations stipulate a 36v maximum . Also, the Department of Transport has made it clear that tampering with inbuilt restrictions also render the machine illegal. The law is stupid and a legacy of an old EU directive, but there it is at the moment.
I wasn’t aware of the battery voltage limit. That’s a new one on me. I’d argue you’re not actually tampering with it.
