I sold EVERYTHING and moved to Chiang Mai, Thailand! (My Story)

- I'm Michael, a digital entrepreneur turned nomad. During COVID both my wife and I both quit our jobs and started our own online businesses. Mine in e-commerce, and my wife's in online fitness and travel. It was a dream come true, living in San Diego and free from corporate 9-5's (more like, 6-10's). Last month we took an even bigger leap, to sell everything we own and move to Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand. It was a difficult but worthwhile decision that took almost 10 years to make. Hopefully my first official RUclips video speaks to you in some way, and I hope to see you traveling the world someday too if you aren't already out there!
Congratulations on the move, Michael. Wish you success in your new adventure. Keep us updated.
Of course will do!
Great video Michael and congratulations on your move. I’ll definitely be looking forward to your future videos.
Thanks Dan!!
Congratulations on your huge move! Thank you for making this video.
Thank you so much!
Welcome to Thailand!
Hey loved this video. The hubs and I are moving to Koh Samui from Big Bear lake Ca…selling evrything too now just waiting for our home to sell. Your video was very inspiring and got me more jazzed to go..cannot wait to get outta here.
Enjoy Chiang Mai!
That's an awesome place, stoked for you two!
I’m 52 …. Thinking of making the BIG jump myself next year. It’s either stay in the 🇺🇸 (SoCal) and work till I die to “get by” or move overseas and retire in my 50s. Lots of anxiety with all the “stuff” to get rid or and selling the house and all 😬
Oh man I just went through all of that. You can start a side hustle or business and keep bringing in income one way or another while you're out here too! You'll be surprised with what you can do with even a fraction of California income too. But yes, that anxiety is a big hurdle. I realized a method, when I was deciding what to keep or what to donate/store. If you look at something you own, and hesitate on making a decision, just get rid of it. If you really need it you'd know. It helped SO much when we were trying to figure it all out, and realized when we got here that we STILL overpacked and so much stuff won't be put to use. But I guarantee you when you finally make the decision, you're not going to regret it for a second. Bringing novelty back into your life is an incredible thing.
@@nofearnomadfor me I’m dreading leaving home, it’s my ancestral home, my family has lived here since about 4 generations now
@DiogenesTheFrog yeah I can imagine that's pretty rough. You could just come out initially for 4-6 weeks, and towards the end of it touch base and see how you're feeling then? Having a lot of unknowns is harder to figure out but that baby step could affirm your decision either way (we did this in October)
They're actually burning the jungles on the mountains looking for mushrooms. They don't burn the rice fields. And
Chang mai has better air than bangkok eight months a year. I couldn't agree with you more. We love Chang. Mai have been here for 8 years.
Such a thoughtful dispatch from Chiang Mai Michael, enjoy every moment
Thank you so much!!!
Everyone ignores it but the smoke is highly cancerous so protect yourself during burning season.
I was in Chiangmai the year Covid started. My family and I were in Thailand in December, spending Christmas break. We got home, and a week after New Year, Covid attacked. I do not know when I will be back in Chiangmai, or perhaps will never be, but I admire Chiangmai so much. Especially the highest mountain in Thailand, I was there. I loved every bit of experience I had in Chiangmai.
Doi Inanthon!! Yes, I really hope you can make it back at some point. If not Chiang Mai in particular, Thailand in general.
9:28 Your kidding Chiang Mai has many butchers you can get any cut of steak of any size from a butcher at Sloan or Rimping or many other butchers. As for hiking shoes you can get it from many outlets including Doctor Sport or Rev Runner
The burning season in Northern Thailand is from February to April, not January and February. During this time, Chiang Mai is often the "world's most polluted city"! Good luck with Thai citizenship. Quotas are limited by country, and the requirements aren't as simple as you think.
Enjoy your adventure in Th. and all SEA 🎉
Thank you! Will do!
I always tell men to stock up on shoes before moving to Asia.
It was at the back of my mind while I was working hard to get everything sold haha. I'll probably stop in Bangkok soon, they'll be sure to have it if I look around.
@@nofearnomad There are certainly taller and bigger men in Asia nowadays. I suspect you can find larger.
I seen size 11 and 12 in the philippines
@@DerrickWeil I'm size 13.5 :( I was able to find it in Kuala Lumpur this week though!
I just left LA and retired to Udon Thani Thailand 🇹🇭.
So happy to hear! I think I've only been there when I was a kid, what's your favorite thing about Udon that made you pick to retire there?
@@nofearnomad Udon Thani actually reminds me of the small town in Louisiana where my grandparents lived. It has everything that I need.
Though there a small Red Light District it is mostly a working town where people get up early and go to bed early.
Also Udon Thani is growing, there is many construction project going on everywhere. It is a industrial hub in the Northeast.
I just like the sense of community and I have made a lot of friends over the years that I have been visiting.
It is a perfect fit for me.
@@FollowingtheJourneyLifeStyle that sounds really unique. For it to remind you of home must make it pretty special.
Hi, welcome to Chiang Mai. By the way, I am MAY, I live in Chiang Rai. I am glad that many Digital nomad expats shoot Thailand as one of their home bases. I like your video and I'd like to hear more of your difficulties living as a Digital nomad here in Thailand. Because I am trying to build a platform to serve Digital nomads in Thailand to live more comfortably.
I hit the subscribe button and look forward to seeing more about the following videos.
Hi May! Love Chiang Rai, we'll be visiting soon. I think that's a great topic for some videos, I have some ideas like giving my perspective and interviewing some other digital nomads here!
@@nofearnomadI am looking forward to watching the video. By the way, stop by in Chiang Rai somehow.
I’ve been to Thailand about 10 times. 7 times to Chiangmai. Haven’t made the big move yet.
The only things that make me hesitate is the tourist crowds and the feb/April smokey season
Definitely valid points. Chiang Mai is ideal for living 8 months out of the year (smoke didn't go away until the rain started to fall as late as end of May). This coming year we will definitely be exploring different places to alternate between, I hear De Nang is getting quite popular with the CM folks
Best of luck man, I’ve been toying with the idea since 2 years now but I still haven’t mustered up the courage to make the move.
I did visit a few times and loved it, I’d probably head south though due to the air quality issues up north in burning season
If Chiang Mai didn’t suffer from the air quality problems, in my view it would be the best place for me to be in Chiang Mai
I've been here for 9 months and will stay for the rest of m y life
I love to hear that!!! I'm so happy to be back and plan to do the same.
2 years ago my wife of 37 years died. I had 3 heart attacks her last week then open heart surgery.
7 months later I had sold our house, given away my possessions and moved to CM.
It's doable.
Thank you for sharing that. I'm so sorry to hear you went through all of that. I'm glad you're in this place now and I sincerely wish you the best.
@@nofearnomad Good luck. I worked in SE Asia for 20 years so I knew it was what I wanted.
😢❤
For those hiking boots go to Decathalon Chiang Mai.
They didn't have size 13.5 :(
Hey man, best of luck to you. Living my dream! I am on the exact same mission. I am also half thai and would love to know how you are finding acquiring thai citizenship? I’m trying as we speak. But I am told I have to serve in the army for 2 years (I am 26), which isn’t a problem but I would love to know how you are going about it? I relate to you quite a bit just off what you were talking about in this video. Glad to have found you. Subscribed and interested in your journey 🙏
Hey!! Yes... I heard that was a possibility. I just turned 30, which means that's no longer a thing. But at 26, from what I'm reading, I think there's a chance you'd have to enlist. Just check the legitimate exemptions to see if you have the ability to skip enlisting, or not. I'm in a peculiar situation where paperwork was never filed when I was born, nor does my immediate family have currently valid papers as they emigrated a long time ago. So it's a journey! But thanks so much for your kind words!!
My question how did you pick chiang mai ? The burning for three months is so bad for the air. My wife and I favorite places in Thailand are chiang mai and hua Hin
We came at the tail end of the smoke. We wouldn't be here during the smoky season and probably move around a lot! I love Chiang Mai and will always be back here during the clean air season (right now it's BEAUTIFUL)
Daygo represent in Chiang Mai☀️ all the best as you settle in there! Which neighborhood in CM?
Thank you! South Changlkan road by Ping river.
@@nofearnomad Hope all is well as July opens. I'll be around the neighborhood in Chiang Mai for about a week starting 3rd July. If you're open to it, would love to chat casually over lunch or at a cafe should you have some free time. No weirdo stuff here, just a San Diegan exploring future options and CM is definitely on my radar. Thanks for posting your content and considering this request.
@@jnsa9454 of course! You can message me on Instagram (@nofearnomad). I'll be in CM until July 7 before a long trip so timing works out
Fair play folk's chok dee 👏
Thank you:)
how does one get started in e-commerce?
I would say, instead of simply dropshipping trendy products, find some niche that you actually care about. Look at your hobbies or passions and think of gaps you can fill, because you understand the audience and know what you would want to buy personally. Pain points being addressed, etc. once you figure the niche and come up with product ideas, there's a lot of ways to get these products designed or sources and plugged in to your marketing model and platform. I like to start with a unique product idea first, the logistics and media buying skills come over time, no get rich quick strategy or anything like that. Lots of people try and pick trending products and run ads but you're not adding value because 100 other people are doing the exact same thing. So I hope that answers your question as to where to start, what comes after takes some education or finding the right trustworthy mentor (not a course) you can pay for to guide you on how to bring your idea to market. It's really rewarding and helped me quit my job very quickly.
Interesting upload. Im torn between Bangkok and Chiang Mai to move to 2025.
Try both! Just hop around, you'll already be in Thailand and that's what matters:)
@@nofearnomad 💯
Give exact money to street vendors. They will rip you off when they give you change and the local
Police will back them up. No large bills to street vendors.
Why didn’t you take the dog with you?
Im heading to chiang mai in a few months. Looking to connect with like minded people looking to succeed in online business abroad. Would love to chat more about your story and possibly connect in chiang mai. Let me know if you’re interested :) Good luck on your journey.
Hey! Of course I love meeting people with shared interests. Do you have Whatsapp?
@@nofearnomad I don’t currently I’m working on setting one up but it’s being a pain not letting me register correctly. Do you have text now or maybe Facebook or ig for the time being ?

congrats, i m sure u heard of the new THAI Tax law this year , if foreigners living in Thai for over 180 days, u have to file Tax return and potential repatriation tax, how would that affect yur finance.
No problem with how US handles foreign earned income tax. I'd rather pay tax in Thailand too.
Ya done messed up 😂rookies
What exactly does a "Digital Entrepreneur" actually do? That's a really broad title for a person who lives and works in a foreign country.
There's a lot of ways to create and run online businesses. I have one company that works primarily in digital products (software for businesses)
and physical products (direct to consumer). It's broad because I don't do just one thing if that makes sense
January and February they burn the rice fields?! In the first 10 seconds you give incorrect information.
"Agricultural burnoff occurs throughout the dry season (Dec-April) but bad air quality usually peaks around late-Feb through to early May" according to various sources, but please let me know where I might have missstated something because I want to get things sorted out so I don't say anything inaccurate!
@@nofearnomadThe air pollution started in the middle of February this year and lasted up to the first week of May.
@@walking_in_the_shade yep I'm glad it's gone! They start burning a lot earlier but it takes a while to build up to how bad it was this year.
burning is february to april...
Check again!
@nofearnomad the smoke is a problem, 2nd week of Feb. To 1st part of May. About 12 weeks.
Great time to travel. We like DaNang 👍 but ❤️ Love Chiangmai
