Hey friends! In this video I answer a question many of you have emailed in: which guitar pick do I use? I’ll answer the question, explaining why I use the pick I’ve favored for the past 10 years or so (Dunlop .46mm “Delrin” 41P.46, light pink) - and why I’ve settled on this pick after experimenting with a few similar ones over the years.

^^ I recommend buying the pick from a local guitar store. But if that's not possible, here's a link to get it from Amazon (purchasing after clicking this link gives a few cents back to me).
Why I like this pick
The two main reasons I like the Dunlop .46mm Delrin style pick:
1. It’s flexible enough to create a softer sound on the strings, but not too flimsy as to prevent you from projecting individual strings when necessary. I've experimented with picks from Dunlop in both directions -- the next thinner version, and the next more stiff version... in both attempts, I felt like I was moving away from the sweet spot that the .46mm provides.
2. It’s material has a nice “grip” on my thumb and index finger, which I find much more helpful than nylon when it comes to keeping control of the pick (and not dropping it).

I was looking for a comparison of dunlop .38 vs .46 vs .60 and found this video. This was helpful as a beginner.
Try them out is the best advice. I did that and automatically knew what was the best choice for my Takamine, the Dunlop ultex .60 mm. Thank you.
I love this pick used it for about 10yrs or more also my trick I use on all my picks get a school hole puncher and make a hole where you feel comfortable I put mine right on the middle try it
"Micro adjustments" with the grey Dunlop pick: that has been bugging me for years. I'm going to order these pink ones right away!
Wow, I figured you’d use a much thicker pick as most guitarist seem to gravitate towards .60mm as a base thickness. As a beginner I have also come to prefer the nylon over the tortex, the tortex is really bright and less flexible. I really like the .46mm same as it’s a happy medium. I will sometimes use a .38mm for strumming exercises I’m struggling with. Great video thanks for sharing 👍🏻
Oh man I love the Dunlop Medium picks. Anything thinner clicks and drives me nuts!
Had to chime in. I picked up one these little pink beauties today. Only once left so your video must have had an impact. Lol. Anyway, excellent pick love it!
Thanks for this... I am a big big fan of “Cool picks”. They have texture as well. They also have wide picks that are easy to hold.
I've only started learning to play guitar about 2 months ago and I've already narrowed down a pick that suits me, which is a .46mm so similar to the one you recommend (it's some Chinese branded one though - 'Sunyin'). I've just ordered some of the pink ones! Can't wait to try it.
I like ultem picks like the Dunlop Ultex on acoustic. They sound nice and bright because the material is really hard.
Absolutely agree
Used to use a Fender medium, that was before nylon picks. Now I use Dunlop nylons, first a .88 then a 1mm now back to the.88...different picks for different moods or types of guitars,music,etc...
Hey david thanks a lot for this advice and i believe a lot of beginners would benefit from this. Could you also make a video about the correct way of holding the pick like when we strum the guitar and how to avoid it from slipping. Thanks a lot and stay safe :)
A lighter pick will also project itself more when the guitar is being mic or amplified. So if you mic the guitar with a mic near where the pick is played the pick will be very bad on the ears. I use .60's for the Electric guitar and .38's for the acoustic, I find with lighter picks on acoustic guitars there is less intonation issues and less micro de tuning issues.
Thank you David, sound advice.
Good video. the pick you like is made of Delrin, a thermoplastic
Thanks for this video! I tried out the pick and love it. Thought 0.46 would be too thin, but now I prefer it over the .60. Do you have any recommendations for a pick to use with electric guitar?
I have big hands so my favorite pick is the one I make by cutting an over-sized corner off of an old credit card.
That’s genius, I need a pick but havnt got the money atm. Thank you😄🙏
Great tips. Should help me
I need pic advice lol. Been playing almost 20 years and typically just us my hands only to play.
Very good review bro
Hey David greetings from San Antonio. Have you tried the Dunlop Max Grip?
I've been using Pick X (by Kalamity Klaire) paired with a Fender Medium. I really like it! Are you familiar with Pick X? If so, what do you think of it?
Great video! Thanks for the help! I'd love to support the local guitar store, but the danged government shut it down because old people might die of the virus. Why can't they let those of us who have so little risk of dying of it to live our lives?
