Nardi thought the serve was out, waited for a call, realized it wasn't being called so he hit an awkward forehand slice, Novak plays the next shot, realizes that Nardi is going to get that drop shot, then Novak stops and looks at umpire, point is then over, and Novak calls hindrance. Nardi did absolutely nothing wrong. He continued playing the point as did Novak. Novak was protesting over nothing and should have just moved on and said nothing to Nardi about it at net. Bad form by Novak.
The proper play from Novak would have been to immediately stop the point the moment Nardi hit back the ball in that awkward way. He missed that moment and 20 years of experience should have taught him to take it like a man and not make an argument out of it.
@@Funkytrip73 I think anybody is allowed to hit the ball in any way he likes (be it awkward or not awkward) and the opponent should just focus on his own game. Very bad behavior by Djokovic, and it is not unusual for him.

You can hit your shot, turn around and start walking towards the sidelines, and you'll still win the point if the other player misses their shot. It's bizarre that Djokovic even said anything at all. You can see that the chair umpire was also confused about why he was upset, because it really didn't make any sense. And then to scold Nardi at the net after the match, really poor sportsmanship, especially from a number 1 player with a couple dozen slams vs a young player with almost no tour experience. He owes Nardi an apology, but I doubt that's going to happen.

In my amateur opinion, it's not enough to call it a hindrance.
Nardi was doubting the call, it made Djokovic doubting as well so that he didn't finish the ball properly.

Love it. Have never been a Djokovic fan to begin with, for starters. If Nardi simply stopped moving (but continued to play) because he thought the ball might have been out and this threw Djokovic off, that's funny, but on the off-chance that he deliberately tried to confuse Djokovic and it worked, that's absolutely hilarious; either way, a little taste of the real side of Novax Djocovid.

Fact is, he didn't just stop as Djokovic is claiming. Nardy HESITATED. There's a difference. If he'd stopped he wouldn't have returned the ball, but he did. And Djokovic hit Nardy's return back, and that's when HE stopped. In any case, you always have to keep playing until you hear a clear call coming from a lines judge or umpire. If a player wants to hotdog, hesitate, do tricks on the court, as long as it doesn't hinder the opponent (which it rarely does), the point remains alive. You just can't allow any antics by your opponent to psych you out. And here, Djokovic got psyched out. Point to Nardy. Well played!!
Very well said! Nardi had a moment of hesitation and realized there was no call, then he reacted fast enough to get to the ball. He won the point fair and square.
Yes. Both Monfils and Kyrios freeze and even those moves are deliberate but it still wouldnt be called a hindrance either. This type of behaviour is what prevents many from being able to claim Nole GOAT.

Nardi is so young that he is not used to the electronic line calls with zero umpires on court. The lower level tournaments might have a challenge system, but Indian Wells is exactly like a grand slam in that the lines are called instantly by the computer. That's why Nardi stopped.

Anyway, the ball was perfectly on play for both players because Nardi did not wave his hands or said anything. It is MAYBE considered a "disturbed ball" - point to be replayed - only for friendly matches or junior tournaments without umpire, not for ATP matches. No, not even for friendly matches, because Nole did not stop playing.

Maybe that was unintended from Nardi, however the ball was PERFECTLY in play according to ATP rules. If you play with your friend you can make a let. I hope I was clear.

If something hindered Djokovic outside of « normal play » then the fact that it was unintentional by Nardi doesnt matter. Djokovic was hindered. Period. If a player drops a ball from his pocket during a point a let is called automatically. Was it intentional? No. The hindrance rule still applies.

Not a hindrance- this happens all the time in tennis, a player thinks its going out and kind of stops, then realizes it was in and has to keep playing. A bit of a fake out, like an underarm serve, but not a hindrance
He thought it was out then realised there was no call so hit the ball..... & over it went.... 🤔 A bit bizarre

Monfils etc….This guy’s play and demeanor doesn’t really line up with that type of play. On the opposite end….you would never see Nadal, Novak, Wawrinka< Alcarez do something like that. Most of the time, the player in Nardi’s shoes would lose this point but Novak didn’t handle this one properly hence his frustration and calling it hindrance
Apart from how wrong Nole is about what he did.. The fact it was a 2nd serve means if it was called out he would have lost the point (and game) anyway. So many reasons why what he did was wrong.
Sports 101 from when we are kids is to keep playing till the whistle is blown. It’s as simple as that.
This stuff happens in all sports, and it’s always on the guy that stops. Football/Basketball/Soccer, you don’t stop because another player stops because he thinks there was a foul. You stop when the ref blows the whistle.

Unlike I initially thought, I now realize actually it was neither a trickshot nor a deceptive shot but last minute reaction by Nardi as he initially thought the serve was out. Whichever the intention, Nardi is well within his Rights to play that shot and is within the rules of the Game and is not a Hindrance. Djoko sure was disturbed / fogged by the situation .. which is.. he was his own Hindrance! Happens in the Heat of the moment. But then after the Game is over and he watches his videos .. has he ever acknowledged he was in the wrong or could have been in the wrong. But he feels and behaves like he is entitled to it .. breaking rackets, throwing tantrums! So while we might admire his certain GOAT Status, time and again a lot of us are forced to despise with equal intensity .. his crappy, melodramatic, disgraceful and entitled behaviour!
I admire Medvedev who frequently acknowledges in his interviews, that some things he has done in the heat of the moment may not have been correct or very appropriate. That is awareness and grace!

This pretty well sums up the mind of an athlete who will do everything possible to win at all costs. You can win graciously and you can lose graciously. An old adage I learnt when playing sport at a very early age is “It’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game.”. Novak has consistently shown over his career displays of bullying, petulance, arrogance and disrespecting players, umpires and even his own coaching staff. Great player if we talk pure tennis ability. But impossible to like as a sportsman for the above reasons. Good on the umpire for standing his ground.

Why don't you tell us, Novak? The world no. 1 tennis player for more than 400 weeks claiming he doesn't know the rules? If you were really confused, you wouldn't have played that backhand. And there was no out call from the electronic line call, so the point continues, right?
Next time when you have a sitter and your opponent gives up on the point but you end up missing, try claiming hindrance because you didn't expect your opponent to react that way.
These kinds of incidences really show his true colors. He will never be well liked no matter how hard he tries to improve his image.

Let's be clear Novak has always been this way on the court, it just doesn't come out unless he is losing which he had much of that in the last decade. By comparison, Roger played 1,526 singles matches and never retired ONCE! What a sportsman, truly amazing. Novak's attitude is keeping the GOAT conversation going similarly to the Lebron v Jordan.

That was such a poor serve the kid hesitated, stood there, then casually bumped it over the net. Djovok deserves to lose.
I'm a fan of Novak but he was wrong in this instance. Nardi thought it was out and stopped but when it wasn't called he continued playing. I could understand it becoming an issue of sportsmanship if you're opponent kept doing that to put you off but that's not the case here. It was just unfortunate. Novak should have kept playing.
Nole did the same against Wawrinka. Wawrinka didn't make a fuss and went on to win the game in style anyway.

Medvdev hit opponent to the ground, won the point the other player said he was not hindered at all but the ump gave the point to the loser anyways because the ump said there was a hindrance and loser was in shock.
Remember
Medvedev tried to speak to Bublik, that was the hindrance, not that he may have hit him with his shot. You cannot try to talk to the opponent during the point. Presumably Medvedev learned from this and will not break this rule in the future, because he is a smart and fair-minded player.
It ment to be a drop shot from Nardi and it looked like it was not executed well by Nardi, but his intention was not to stop to trick Djokovic. Djokovic is 100% wrong here

Two things are true:
1. Nardi thought Novak's shot was out and momentarily stopped. After realizing the shot wasn't called out, he immediately continued playing the point normally. This is all acceptable according to the rules, and Nardi did nothing wrong.
2. Novak interpreted Nardi's reaction as indicating his own shot was out and stopped playing too. This is incredibly frustrating for Djokovic, as it would be for any player. If Nardi had done this on purpose, it would be a hinderance. Therefore, it's reasonable for Djokovic to press the chair umpire for a hinderance if he believes Nardi might have done it on purpose.
Second point was not true.. he went on to play a dropshot before he stopped.
Novak did the same thing before..

Had nothing to do with the rules or anything that Nardi actually did. Djokovic was trying to create a fight in order to give himself something to fight against. He does this all the time. He argues with fans, umps, the people in his box, etc. It's how he fires himself up to win when his tennis is letting him down, and it's the cause of so many of his "own-goals." It has always made it hard for a lot of people to root for the guy.
It wasn't a hindrance. It was bad sportsmanship from Djokovic to argue with the umpire and especially bad to lecture his opponent during the post match handshake. A hindrance is when you do something intentionally to distract your opponent or if you speak while the ball is heading toward your opponent in doubles. If Nardi waved his arms as Djokovic was prepping or hitting the ball, that would be a hindrance. Nardi temporarily stopped thinking the ball was out but then played the ball and the point. It wasn't a hindrance. Here's another example. Say your opponent shanks a groundstroke and it goes high into the air and at first you think it is going out and stop moving. But, then you realize it might go in and resume moving to the ball and play a stroke. That isn't a hindrance because you had no intent to distract your opponent.
Such behavior doesn't at all behoove of Djoko the one and only 🐐
