I used to work at Mid West Pipe Coating in Schererville Indiana. At first our larger diameter pipe was coated with coal tar and layers of felt and fiberglass. That was a horrible line to work on and at the end of even a cold day on the exit rack, your exposed skin was sunburned because of the harsh chemicals flying around in the air....I was sent to the clinic many times because my skin was blistered.I worked on that exit rack that was open on one wall so fork lift trucks could remove the finished pipe.I started there in 1979 and left there in 92.Thank God they tore out the old coal tar line in about 83 and constructed a large diameter fusion bonded epoxy powder coating that gelled up at 438 degrees and was hard enough to roll on 16" tires within about 6'.My job was on the exit rack to inspect the pipe....measure the coating thickness and report it to the operator. That line was 20 times better than that old nasty tar line.We could handle 6" on up to about 48 ".But most of the orders were 16-24" at about30-42' long.We did coat a 36" order for Canada back in about 84.The order was for about 97 miles of pipe. And took use the whole summer.I am glad I got out of there in 92 because....I got a way better paying job....learned a trade....and at 61 years old....my lungs are still ok.Many guys I knew from there....died at 40- 50 years old.

I worked for a pipeline contractor in the late 70's to the mid-80s - not so much in the field but in a warehouse/repair shop capacity - and equipment yard, where all the junk was resurrected after the jobs!
One day the office called up the warehouse and volunteered me (lol) to fly from Edmonton to Calgary to deliver a ( Bid proposal) to Nova's office in downtown Calgary.
It had to be delivered (last minute) before 9 am the next morning!
No problem I said, I'll catch the red-eye in Edmonton at 6 am. Land in Calgary 30 minutes later, catch a cab, and zip downtown with no problem, that's going to give me a lot of time !!
What could go wrong ??, 🤔 lol -
Well let's just say for starters- my alarm clock didn't go off and I slept in lol! Missed my 6 am departure!! And panicking because I lived 45 minutes from the airport to downtown Edmonton but did manage to get a flight out, @ 7:30.
Sitting on the runway ready to take off, the pilot announced that there was a small problem at Calgary airport and we would be delayed as we started to go back to the boarding gates! OMG !! The pilots asked the passengers if they wanted to get off or wait for the go as we were no longer landing on time- so some got off and the remainder decided to wait it out - and I was praying for a miracle at this point lol - thank God we were on our way in an hour- we landed at 8:30 - grabbed a cab and offered up a $100 tip if he could get me to Nova's office before 9 lol
he did and the bid was in by 8:55 am !!!
As soon as I told the receptionist who I am, she was in shock and told me to call home and the head office, because they thought you were killed in the 6:30 am crash landing at the municipal airport- lol - 😆
I HAD NO CLUE that's why our flight was delayed in departure from Edmonton. So I called the office in Edmonton and Gene Caron answered the phone asking what happened and if the bid made it on time.
Yes sir I said, I jumped from a burning 🔥 crashed airplane ✈️ during all the confusion, hopped a fence by the runway and grabbed a cab, got stuck in traffic, but made it with 5 minutes to spare lol! Good, he said because if you didn't I would have killed you lol 😆

When I was a kid in the 60's I had a pipe and pump toy. it was fun putting the pipe together and hand cranking the pump to push water thru it. Till the cheep plastic handle broke. That was a major bummer experience that scared me for life.

Have often wondered why those who work in the best conditions with air conditioned offices get the highest pay. But the workers that do the actual work in all weather conditions and any where get the lowest pay and are the first laid off when the project is finished.

The pipe layers get excellent money, plus they don't mind the lay offs. They need to go home and lay more pipe.

Manger's are a small part, all the credit should go the the workers in the field that get there hands dirty. In the mangers are every thing but forget the one's who do the work. Let's see the CEO & manger's get out & get there hands dirty & find out what hard work is like.

All I did was Horstal boring. On pipe I would have to seal pipe with water running out lay in the mud an too make it Ezer the pipe was old. Bent. Coted gas line. Stay in a trench. For long time. The mud would get thick. My welds never broke. I burnd out. Poor pay very long Hrs. But. I was. Good an graze. It will do that. Theas men got it eze. I rooted with water. Then push the pipe. No breaks. In my welds.
