As always a great video. If you struggle to get rid of the smoke or any other persistent smell I highly recommend what the used car dealers do and buy a small ozone generator. Set it running and leave it alone for an hour and you’ll be amazed at how effective it is. I’ve got rid of dog and cigar smoke smell in 20 minutes, that 3 deep washes had failed to shift.
Scott, I think I am speaking for all of us here--We are happy for you guys. Congratulations. I am sure in time, this house will be made in to a really nice place. BTW, I like the garage. A two car garage - that is the deal. Can you lift the roof of the garage by adding some spacer on top of the walls. Some more head space would mean more storage and airiness
There are three things I love about your videos, Scott - firstly, you film content I'm really interested in, secondly, I love your Kiwi accents, and thirdly, the NONEXISTENCE of the fourth wall makes for some comedy gold.
"No one's getting in there Jess", literally 17 seconds later Jess manages to break into her own home. Very much looking forward to this series Scott!, cheers from Cape Town, S.A.
@@eraser465 ahh fantastic!, i'm not to far away from Bellville. Dope. As someone who lived in New Zealand for 3 years and just moved back to Ireland, your videos make me so happy seeing your beautiful country. God I miss the lifestyle :')
Congratulations Jess & Scott Welcome Home! The look on Scott’s face as he was talking about the garage, Priceless! This is going to be a great journey to watch as this house becomes a workshop & a home.
This has got to be the most wholesome thing I’ve seen in ages. I’m so excited to see where this goes. Make sure you keep Jess in the videos, her dry sarcastic feedback is the best!!
buying a fixer upper was the right move. you have the skills to make it exactly the way you want and it will give you content that we can all enjoy watching.
Do not remove the fireplace, upgrade it to a compliant one, Nelson winters a cold, and heat pumps are nothing like the feel of a fire. For some areas in Nelson, once you remove it cant be replaced in the future if you change your mind.
Im glad I’m not only one who washes the ceilings, walls, etc…with a mop, like, why not as just a big rag on a stick, lol. Also makes it easier. Smoke smell almost gone, and priming and painting helped SO MUCH! along with ripping carpet out and doing all new Floors Got my house in January, and move in day was yesterday, and finished most of remodel on 10 Dec 2021. Still have a bathroom and ceiling to do (cracked ceiling, so…….:and the bathroom shower has cracking grout, even around drain. Gotta love remodeling; Fun fun fun.
Absolutely the right place to choose to live Scott...it’s a beautiful part of the South Island that is still relatively still affordable with massive potential...I particularly love Mapua near the wharf which isn’t to far from where you guys are....well done on making the leap into home ownership and a person with your building and carpentry skills I’m sure it will be the first of many that you guys will own if you so choose to go down that route....also the land size is perfect that’s where the value is....
I like the cabinets, they have that mid-century look that that many people want, but you can’t buy anymore. But those countertops and appliances have got to go!
The expression and elation on Scott's face when he says "I've got a garage" - I felt the same way when we bought our first home; and I could actually park cars in it along with my tools. Congrats on the new place, it's going to be amazing!
Scoot & Jess. Congratulations! A real project but so much potential. And a, what will be amazing garden. It will all take time but it will be worth it. And, yes Scott, as you say it is a good to 'live in' an old house to find all those hidden aspects. Also, here in the UK it is a considered worthwhile trying to live a year to monitor how the natural light changes in the property. Very different in summer and winter. Stay safe. And you will make it YOUR HOME! Together.
I'm super excited to watch your Journey as you completely renovate this house! I'm going to be rewatching this video in the future to remember how it use to look like!
Awesome House !!!!!! because it means a new beginning , its also great seeing the two of you enjoying - SMOKO TIME! Love that! i cant wait to see what you do with the new place Its gonna be awesome!!!!!!!
I don't think I have watched a video on RUclips I have been happier to see. I watched with a HUGE smile on my face the entire time - I am so happy for you both. Hardly a s*itter, but it is yours! Congratulations you two - well deserved and well earned. Now get to work and bring us along with you. Cheers from Alaska!
Congratulations! An ozone generator will get rid of the smoke smells. They're pretty cheap for one with a big enough output for for a house. It'd need to be left on for a few hours with everything closed, then turn it off and air out the house before entering as it's dangerous to breathe in. Used one on my second hand car that absolutely reeked. Took about 3 x 2 hour runs and a follow up vacuum and you can't notice the smell.
Can't wait to see all the renos!! We just celebrated our 1 year of home ownership and went through that process from a 1974 house and redid everything so I'm very excited to see your journey
Ha-ha, Jess! You're not in the Big City anymore! You're just like us - the place had to be washed top to bottom, carpet's cleaned or removed and everything painted before our sensitive dog would feel at home - he couldn't stand the cigarette & dog-stinks any more than we could! Congratulations on buying your First Home - a big step. I think a lot of viewers will be very interested to see a house from this period in almost-original condition - there are few homes in Britain (I'll guess) that look like this nowadays, but there are still plenty in NZ & across the ditch that look just like this - incredible really! I think you're right to grow into it - I'd say the same for the garden, too, even more so: - don't go mad ripping stuff out, because you don't know what it is or whether you'll like it. Unlike fixtures & fittings indoors, your garden takes years to establish, so what you could rip out or certainly cut down in 5-mins could have taken 30/40-years to get like that & when it's gone - it's GONE! Certainly do a little pruning & tidying, weeding's always good, but till you've been in a while (year!) you won't really know how it works & what eyesores it's hiding. The garage is such an asset - you won't know yourself! Just in time for Christmas! Have FUN! 🦘🐾👍
Really happy for you guys! I bought my first house last year as a renovation project. It was very like you're house. Our saying was it's a s**thole but it's our s**thole. Congratulations on getting there Scott and Jess. Phil from Northern Ireland.
I bought a van to turn into a camper. Previous owner was a smoker. The inside of the dash and the door cards, even the metal under the floor, was stained YELLOWBROWNBLACK. The smell was so hard to get rid of. But that’s what I could afford and I don’t mind working hard. You’ll love your house even more because of the transformation and the time you’ve put into it. Love your videos. All the best from Cambridge UK ✌🏻
We bought a house that was similar to this. Built in 1950, the tenants in it before us had been in it for 20years and smoked inside. It smelt so strong until we deep cleaned everything and painted it. Awesome stuff guys, love your content
I rarely comment but your purchase brought back memories of my similar situation of moving from a high priced area where I was increasingly priced out of the housing market to another part of the country and bought a 1970's house that had set vacant for over a year. I was forced to learn basic carpentry to fix the place up and am now deep into woodworking. I sort of smiled to myself thinking you are light years ahead of most people and will look back in a few years and marvel at how you have made the place your own.
I would look at the garden now - what you can keep, what needs trimming & what needs replacing. Planting in Summer means the plants can settle in while renovating.
Hi Scott I have 66 rancher in suburban Vancouver Bc that I bought 10 years ago from original owner. There is not a room I have not touched. I share your enthusiasm and I share your pain! Congratulations and it looks great 👍
Congratulations, to me looks like you are onto a winner with this property. Can't wait to see the renovations as they take place. Keep up the good work and stay safe.
Wow my heart started pumping blood so freaking FAST! I'm sooooo excited for the renovations! do very long videos please! BTW your house is so beautiful!
Congratulations to you both on the house 🍾 🎉 I can't help but agree with what Jess said regarding the house being "a shitter, but your shitter". I was born in London and have lived here all my life so will have to make a similar switch to afford a place of my own🤷🏼♂️ I can't wait to see what you both do to the place, but I know I'll be here watching every step along the way.😁👍🏼
Only one was to eliminate smoke smell and stains. Trisodium phosphate to wash everything. Clean water wash. Thick coat of shellac based primer. I renovated my own house and it is a mid century that enjoyed the golden age of smoking. It’s a pain but the smell will go away. At least until it is humid and you will find all the places you haven’t cleaned or painted yet. Looking forward to watching your journey in the new house. Congratulations
Hope you read this comment, Scott. My wife and I have been in our house since 1976 and have renovated twice. Both times using the open concept. Don't do that!!! We have no private (soundproof) space to be alone when the other is making necessary noise (yelling at a friend over the phone). You and Jess need to claim your own space within the house that can be closed off for that privacy. 51 years of marriage. You'd think we would have figured that out. Anyway, looking forward to following your remodel adventure.
Only 39 years of marriage here. You are so right. Private space is important. My wife and I had our own offices in our previous house, but we share one now. It's a big room, so there's plenty of space. We have our own desks and computers. It's at the top of our house, overlooking Port Stephens (NSW, Oz) and the Pacific Ocean. But ...
I think back to 1979 .In this year my wife and i bought our first home to share the rest of our lives together. It was a very exciting time for us, seven homes, two children, two grandchildren, six dogs five cats, we are still together. We wish Scott & Jess Brown the very best in your lives together and the wonderful memories that you are creating. 😋
What a great start to a new adventure! Well done Scott and Jess - hoping to buy my first property soon too *fingers crossed* Just a video idea, I know it would be off the topic but what about telling us (viewers) of how you and Jess met, and how you guys have progressed through - I know you have touched on it briefly but in detail would be pretty awesome Anyways, good luck with the renovations, many tears and laughs ahead! Happy 2022 and Merry Christmas
scott & jess you guys are awsome, really looking forward to the series and seeing what you guys do with the business in the future. thanks for the videos guys from Essex, England!
Wow! That kitchen is an exact match for the one I just tore out and replaced in my last renovation. Plywood cabinet doors, same color... Built in oven and all. I loved it the way it was, but we were flipping it. So, out it went. Looks like a great home for you and Jess. Happy for you two! Be well...
Really great to see your "new" house at long last, and that garage I bet sold the house for Scott....am in the middle of renovating a unit and living in it at the same time, the garage you have will come in very handy for storing materials etc as you work, only wish I had somewhere like that as it's a real pain having to move belongings as I work. Your setup there will make life so much easier than my situation.... the house looks like it has great potential and is probably the perfect type of house for you 2. Really interested to see what you do to it. I was guessing either Nelson or CHCH for your move, Nelson would have been my pick and I wish you guys all the best with your project
Our house here in Texas was built in 1961. We put all new electrics into it, as well as new windows and bathrooms. Congratulations on your new house!! :D
Awesome new space, so much potential. That garage is sweet, can't wait to see what you do with that space. I personally like the overgrown look of the yard, I'd keep it if it was my yard haha. Good luck with all the work, I'm excited for y'all!
Maybe Makita can send you some gardening tools to show us. All the best with the property. Loads of work, but a space to call your own is a good motivator.
Gratzz on the new house. That amazing feeling you're gonna get that every "nail" you put into it is YOURS. Thats real nice. Again congratz and that backyard, 2 days tops.... 😁
Jess/Scott Congratulations on your first home, May U make Many Happy Memory's. Man buys a 🏡 fall's in love with his 2 bay Garage, Priceless, Man goes to buy Paint, get lost in the tool candy store.
Seriously living vicariously through you! Congrats on the garage ...and house! I'm awfully jealous from my little townhouse. My garage (crawlspace) is only 4ft tall so yours looks like plenty of headroom. I guess I can't complain too much, it fits a table saw (just need to kneel)! Cheers from Colorado, more content please. :)
Scott and Jess, congrats on your first "owned" house. I think you should try and recycle some of the stuff you plan to demolish or remove from your house. For example, the "conservatory" could, imho, easily serve as a bus shelter!
The view from the backyard is a spectacular backdrop for a 👰🏻🤵🏻♂️💍! Just saying Scott-she will make your house a home. Congratulations and much prosperity to you both.
Even more terrifying is if some future viewer says “I can’t believe they got rid of any of that incredible classic 70s style”. That’s when you know society has fallen to an all time low 😝
Coming back after watching the before/after video. So much work done and it shows! Beautiful new kitchen and much more open space! Awesome deck and garden! Cheers!
Scott: The house: I mean yeah it needs renovating (._.) The garden: Yeah it’s alright, needs some cleaning (._.) THE GARAGE: HELL YEAH BABY DOUBLE GARAGE (0_O) I’m really happy for you both! And I know what it means for a man to have his garage! All the best!
Just love Jess's comment "Here's Johnny" LOL. You two are the best, my favorite UTUBE Channel! Really looking forward to watching you make this house YOUR home!
Welcome to being a home owner Scott and Jess. we got are house 34 years ago and did a total gut job over a period of 8 to 10 years. we did one room at a time while still living in it. We did what we could afford as we did it. save some money up then go to the store and buy more stuff for our house. one of the hardest thing to do was it Seemed like all we did was clean up construction dirt and mess. Well worth it at the end. You can sit back when it's all done and yes we did it. But one thing it's never really done it just slows way down. Keep up the good videos Best of luck to you two.
You two are SOOO cute!!! Hopefully Richard, over at Finish Carpentry TV, can give you some ideas about that garage of yours...OH...I see that he posted below. Love your video's my friend.
My fellow cheddar and marmite eaters, I wish you all the best of luck in your new home. It's slightly sad that you couldn't do this in Auckland due to crazy property property prices. That seems to be a global disease at present. I look forward to seeing what I am sure will be a bright future for an you.
When you have a chance to be away from that house, rent Ana ozonator for few day and blast the house with that it will help a lot with cigarette smell. Then air it out for couple of hours, that much ozone is not healthy for humans or animals. I’ve done it many times. Looking forward to see how your house is coming along. Cheers from Dallas. 🇫🇮
Good luck. I remember my first house I purchased in 1984. It was a mess because the previous owner had 3 cats! NEVER AGAIN! Thats why I build my current house.
I sense much more humor in coming episodes. Love it. Congrats on the house. Having remodeled with much success on a 1970s rancher, y’all will do quite awesome since you’re 10x the carpenter that I was at that time.
I am so happy for you guys. I had a garage on the house I used to own but never parked a car in it. It was my wood shop. I built every stick of furniture in my now ex's home. I am too old to work any longer so I get my wood fix from people like you. Cheers from Canada.
GREAT SCOTT!!! That's a cool house. It's better than our first house, although we lived in ours for 18 months and sold it for twice what we paid for it. In the early 1970's. A lot of the houses built when your house was built Scott, the framing was all native timber. So don't be surprised if yours is the same. You have one thing we didn't have and that is a garage. So going to be really interesting watching your progress.
All it's missing is purple shag carpeting. Congratulations, gotta love that workshop space.
There's nothing like the peace of mind from chaining a glass door shut. Congratulations on the home.
Or a lever type deadbolt on a glass door . I see that all the time.
This looks like a perfect project house for a professional builder - I'm sure you'll turn it into your own personal little paradise. 😁
As always a great video. If you struggle to get rid of the smoke or any other persistent smell I highly recommend what the used car dealers do and buy a small ozone generator. At least she didnt kick the door in and take your tools down to cash convertors , for some sweet cash for meth

Build a North facing brick wall in the garden, and fit that conservatory to it and you've got yourself a great greenhouse.
Jess is hilarious. I had a good laugh 😂.

Yeah! 2-car garage.✔ Move-in day change all the locks & install deadbolts.✔ Can't wait to see all the future projects. Congrats on your 1st house!
I cannot wait to see what this house turns into over the next year!
Here’s Johnny😂. Wishing you energy and serenity in your new home. All the best.
Excited for you guys!
The house looks like it would have solid bones! That’s all you need!
Well done guys. The property looks great!😎🌴💐🌲
It's a shame the garage doesn't come with a pre-existing Gaston. Luckily, you can likely bring your own.
or Pavel, but i guess they come arround too
Ah the joy of reno on a blank canvas. Onya Scott & Jess. The kiwi way. Only difference is you’ve got genuine skills to do the reno.
Welcome to Nelson, just started watching your videos, I live in Richmond
You do realise that a builder’s own home never gets ‘finished’ until you are ready to sell it, right?
Coming back after watching the before/after video. So much work done and it shows! Beautiful new kitchen and much more open space! Awesome deck and garden! Cheers!
Scott:
The house: I mean yeah it needs renovating (._.)
The garden: Yeah it’s alright, needs some cleaning (._.)
THE GARAGE: HELL YEAH BABY DOUBLE GARAGE (0_O)
I’m really happy for you both! And I know what it means for a man to have his garage!
All the best!
Never get between a man and his shed. :D
Just when I thought this channel couldn’t get any better. Moving to Nelson!!! It’s such a beautiful place. The richest blessings to you both 🙌🙌👍👍
There is definitely a retro charm to this place. That wooden panelling and those kitchen worktop tiles. And I'm oh so jealous of the garage!
against odor I would try to leave ozone cleaners as they are used against covid over two nights and it's ok
My favorite part of renovating a home is the bathrooms, so many ideas !
Can't wait to see more videos, Scott.
You two are SOOO cute!!! Hopefully Richard, over at Finish Carpentry TV, can give you some ideas about that garage of yours...OH...I see that he posted below. Love your video's my friend.
You guys are beautiful together! Best of luck with the renovation!
My fellow cheddar and marmite eaters, I wish you all the best of luck in your new home. It's slightly sad that you couldn't do this in Auckland due to crazy property property prices. That seems to be a global disease at present.
I look forward to seeing what I am sure will be a bright future for an you.
That place is HUUUUUUGE! Rooms are so big! I sure you'll be very happy there, good luck with the renovations.
I can't get over the way you say garage and it's awesome! Looking forward to watching the transformation
Congratulations on your new home. When’s the wedding.
Scott you have no idea how excited i am about this reno, i can feel how excited you are! Jess can finally get a dog hahaha
Good luck. I remember my first house I purchased in 1984. It was a mess because the previous owner had 3 cats! NEVER AGAIN! Thats why I build my current house.
The nature Broll transitions is what keeps me coming back!
Congrats Scott. Looks like you struck gold there. Looking forward to seeing the transformation.
