"Attention: There has been an accident at Maintenance Junction 17. All trains on the Northern Line bound for Dionysus Park, Fort Frolic, Minerva's Den, and Arcadia will experience delays. We apologize for any inconveniences."
    ― Rapture's PA Announcements, Pre-Fall
After another series of frustration and conflicts, here's Rapture's Apollo Square in the final years of the city 's construction, as requested by the user pevelis.
This was, without a doubt, one of the more challenging ambient videos. I got halfway through planning the video before realizing that my expertise came from quieter videos, like the Tea Gardens and the New Years Party. However, with the onslaught of sounds from passing trains, incoming and outgoing trolleys, PA announcements, music, people walking and talking, I've come to realize that this shouldn't be a video that should be filed under "Ambient Noise".
    And yet, here we are.
All PA announcements were recorded by me with a friend's aid, filling in gaps of Rapture's development (I.E. Siren Alley was originally named "Vesta Arcade" for the Roman goddess Vesta, the virgin goddess of the hearth, home, and family (closely associated with Hestia), or that Dionysus Park was originally an annex of Fort Frolic).
I've spent too much time thinking about this.
    Enjoy, guys!

Just recently discovered your channel through the Arcadia video as I struggle to sleep. I recently got back into Bioshock after not playing it for a while. The video helped so much. I'm happy this one was uploaded too. Thank you for all your hard work and the time and effort you put into your videos. :)

Amusement Park please. You could include the voicelines about the foundation of rapture and voicelines from "journey to the surface". All that added to crow sounds + children voices and stores announcement.
    Thank you.

holy cow; that would be an intriguing environment, but I currently have a backlog of about 4 videos (including an extended New Years 1959 party), but I promise it will come.
would you like pre-fall or post-fall?

Thanks for your answer. Pre-fall would be better, because thats à place that we couldnt have seen in the game.

Way late to the party, but I adore this series of yours! Specifically in your description you mentioned your fill of Siren Alley being originally named Vesta Arcade, I love that a lot. It always really bothered me that the original name was never given. You know, thematically I get it... But it's always bothered me. Anyway, thanks for these

I wanted to ask - I couldn't make out the words of the unique PA announcements you made for this. Is there any chance you or somebody else could transcribe them for me?

@@gagenott amazingly, i couldn't make it out, either haha
unfortunately, i lost the original file with the individual audio clips in the Great Computer Crash of '18, but i was able to piece together what i remember recording/throwing the video through so many filters to separate out the noise as best i could -
PA Announcement @ 1:17 - "Due to ongoing maintenance, bathysphere service from Arcadia to Fort Frolic will be suspended. Travel arrangements should be made via Atlantic Express or the tram system. Thank you."
the PA Announcement @ 17:40 is near inaudible, unfortunately, and i spent a good while playing with the audio settings on my grandpa computer to hear it. it has something to do with Dionysus Park, Fort Frolic, and Vesta Arcade (which is the non-canon name i gave to Siren Alley [further explanation in the video description]). here's what i was able to piece together from the audio - "Dionysus Park will remain ------------ Fort Frolic, via a ---------------- Vesta Arcade," and then the rest of it is near-inaudible.
it's a long one, and i'm really sorry i wasn't able to distinguish more.
obviously, it had something to do with Dionysus Park, a delayed opening date perhaps, though i'm not sure how it was connected with Siren Alley
ngl, i'm pretty bummed out that i can't really hear it. if anyone wants to try to isolate the clip, i'm down to help as best i can
PA Announcement @ 26:18 - "Attention: There has been an accident at Maintenance Junction 17. All trains on the Northern Line bound for Dionysus Park, Fort Frolic, Minerva's Den, and Arcadia will experience delays. We apologize for any inconvenience."

@@LucasHarris Wow! I'm so impressed by all the work you put into making these lines as immersive and lore-friendly as possible, even though they fade into the busyness of the environment so seamlessly.
And thank you for transcribing as best you can! I hope someone with actual video editing experience is able to help to isolate the clip!
Also, my girlfriend has now joined me in listening to these videos, so I don't know what higher praise you can receive. Well done!

What is your favorite philosophy from BioShock? Just generally how a character conducts his or her self would suffice as an answer.

    • @LucasHarris
      @LucasHarris  5 лет назад +4

honestly, i think it's the accidental reinforcement of progressivism and the dangers of overindulged self-interest in a society that i like the best

    • @cliffracers9580

@@LucasHarris Accidental? Bioshock is pretty hamfisted in making fun of Objectivism and laissez-faire capitalism in general. There's also the commentary that opportunists like Fontaine will use this oppression to manipulate and rise to power. In many ways Fontaine is like many of the people we see today like Elon Musk who promise and possibly give things like plasmids or space travel, claim it is to help people, but exploit people and their labor for using the corporatism they claim to be against.
I get what you mean though. It's really frustrating when people think Rapture = Good and the message is that Rapture was a paradise and don't understand that the point is that Rapture was doomed to fail even if plasmids didn't exist.

    • @LucasHarris
      @LucasHarris  4 года назад +4

@@cliffracers9580 nono, when i say "accidental reinforcement of progressivism and the dangers of overindulged self-interest in a society", i am referring to the concept of Rapture and objectivism as a whole. i wouldn't say Bioshock makes fun of it, but rather applies the theory in a way that makes it easier for people to digest without really thinking about it. an issue with objectivism from the get-go is, as Leonard Peikoff characterizes it, it's a "closed system" that is unable to change; which, in turn, becomes a serious issue considering most of humanity's history was nothing BUT change. and while i do agree with your example of Fontaine to Musk, i would more so say that it's an example of extreme capitalism, wherein as long as they have money, they can get away with it. what are your thoughts?
adding to your final thought, i, personally, was never in the belief that Rapture = good; more so, i liked the city as an aesthetic and a design perspective. while i do believe it was paradise to some people in-game, i don't believe that there's such a thing as paradise since it's such a subjective concept and varies from person to person.
also, your point commenting about opportunists taking advantage is also true, and was something i hadn't considered in depth. thanks!

@@LucasHarris I feel Bioshock's portrayal of Objectivism is purposely a bit over the top to drive the point home, considering Andrew Ryan considered America to be too "communist" for his taste. He's not a cartoon villain, his backstory is pretty much the same as his namesake: A middle-class Jew in Russia loses property from the government just like Ayn Rand did. Bioshock's main message is that this is unstable to the point where it only lasted 7 years, and it manages to express this with realistic characters, albeit with not so subtle references to of Ayn Rand.
In terms of Rapture being in a closed system, I would say you are definitely on the money in both a literal and figurative sense. Rapture was in a sense a symbol of cultural stagnation. Although it was the late 50's when Rapture fell, Rapture never left the Roaring 20's for the wealthy, and The Great Depression for the workers that built the city and died scrubbing the toilets.
I'm not sure if the issue with Fontaine is really the money that surrounds him, I think that's just symbolic of the power he has as a grifter. He is a powerful and charismatic sociopath. Rapture was going to end in revolution due to the ridiculous amounts of class disparity and the desperation we see the citizens act in, he just took advantage of it much like how Hitler took advantage of Germany's post-war economic collapse. Although you are correct that the upper class can get away with nearly anything, I'm not sure that was the message Fontaine delivered in the story.
Also, I love Raptures design and atmosphere as well. Thank you for making this video.
