- Welcome to my 50th vlog in a row off the phone. It's about possum trapping. Possums are a serious pest animal in New Zealand and a threat to our forests and native wildlife. They eat leaves, flowers, leaf buds, fruit, eggs, birds, insects and snails. Possums are also a great resource to trappers and hunters. Their fur is valuable and their meat is one of the best food souses for our dogs.

Shame you’ve got to do all the disclaimers to justify trapping an invasive species, I trap coyotes here in East Tennessee, they’re invasive here also and I’ve got this hippy neighbor woman who hates me for trapping
I should imagine that poisoning is a very dangerous way of dealing with animals. You don't know what the consequences are.

Awesome bro, i left school to trap fukk time till I start my building apprenticeship and i learnt that if you nail the chain a little higher up the tree the possum has less chain to run round the tree to pull himself out

You could also shortin the chain by banging staple in half way or so along chain this only works if your setting on the ground
Chanes set too low and two long if they get a run up they'll pull out 😉

Tb is a disise that possums qnd rabbits get but I'm not to sure if there is tb in nz and the permit is because it gives them a rough idea on who's in those bush and how many hunters there are

My elders taught me that I've got to 'stay in my hoop' (provide for the well-being of my close/immediate family) first before I can be of true service to my larger 'hoop' (greater family/friends) onward to community, etc. At least that's the way I was taught as the way to 'walking in a good way'. And that's the way I see you live, interacting with your daughters and sons, dads and moms, your kids that you teach by example. I think you get what I'm struggling to say. When I see your clips I see an honorable and humble man serving as example to the future generations. Something the Young need to see as example for living in a good way. Thank you. Good journeys.

I’m a hunter and agree with invasive species control but trapping is harsh as fuck, inflicting terrible pain on animals for no other reason than you can’t be bothered to stalk and shoot !
I use to be a trapper when I was a boy and the traps we used back then were brutal. Today's humane hold traps are quite different. Don't worry, we do heaps of shooting too Matthew. If you want to see an animal dies slowly in great pain then look no further in what nature dishes out. A rat will start eating a baby kiwi while it is still alive in its nest or a cat will torture a native tui for a prolonged amount of time and then not even eat it after it has finally died.

Wots hey using as a lure I see the flour we use to use a mixture of flour and aniseed oil when I was using gin traps and put a few bits of apple around trap ? Clay did good with this method didn't really put the flour up the tree and would find a clearing and lay 4 or so traps around the outside of clearing eg grassey areas mate

what we did in Tassie in the sixties when i was a bushie was place a bush pole of about 2 metres long at about 45 degree angle against the tree, you pick the tree that possums are climbing and put the pole on its run up the tree, then place a looped snare wire nearer the top part of the pole so when the possum climbs up the pole it gets it head snared, then it will jump off and thus hangs itself, far better than traps,
The problem with this is that in nz the traps provide the opportunity to pluck the possums, when the possums have been dead for longer than 5 mins the muscles stiff up and it's almost impossible to pluck the possums.

Good video. I hate to see animals go to waste. Good to see that you are using an otherwise bad situation to your advantage. In Texas we have a huge problem with pigs. Some just shoot them... not good. I like to trap them and feed them out in order to cut down on the gamey taste.
No one likes waste. Its always good if you can harvest what you kill. Pest control on a larger scale does not always offer that luxury to the game cullers.

It may be not cost-effective to collect carcasses.
But, trappers still need to get their protein.
If they don't use possum meat, they have to kill other animals for protein.
Also a lot of people, who take part in wasteful culls eat meat of domestic sheep and so add to sheep grazing impact on ecosystem.
