I've found out that a water based pomade works better for slicking down curls, i have mostly straight hair but i have some fine curls on the sides. So i use a oil base for the top and back and a water base for the sides

If you give the side a push from the back it will give you volume also it will be perfect for when you're overdue for a cut.
