The reason my spring broke, and I did not know this until trying to install the replacement, is that the lid bracket bent and obstructed the swing of the spring as the trunk closed. It is fairly soft stamped steel. I bent the bracket back straight with channel locks. Then I lowered both the back seat backs and laid in the trunk with the lid down and this made popping the new spring back into the bracket notches much easier.
