    What I find frustrating about a lot of smartphone reviews is how almost all review all phones as 1) needing to be for everyone, 2) must work like an iphone, and 3) that the Xperia camera system is so complicated. It would be the same as if car reviewers talked about an SUV, a sports car, and a minivan as all being for the same general audience, market and type of person. And expecting all different cars designed and engineered for a different customer to work in the same way.
    I think Sony knows exactly who they made this phone for. And I think it's a bit dishonest to simply call it a niche market in the sense that while it is a niche...it's also a fairly sizable one. Last time I checked there are millions of professional, prosumer, and hobbyist photographers out there. Who like and want manual control, natural looking pics, and a camera like experience. There's a reason millions of cameras 📸 are still sold each year. If anything I would argue it's a shrewd move to target that market. Not to mention the growing market for content creators. I think it's perfectly fine to make a phone for a certain type of person. Iphones are already made for the average person that knows little about photography and thus need the phone to do all of the work.
    Also, I think that Sony is deliberately going a different way with their camera system. They are focusing on what they do well. It's very difficult to be better than someone who already does what they do well. It's best to focus on your own strengths. Sony is never going to out iphone Apple. They already are good at making iphones. So it's a smart move for Sony to instead differentiate themselves and do what they do well. And I can't understand why so many reviewers have difficulty with the idea of a different approach. Again....the car analogy. An iphone or Galaxy camera system largely does the work for the person (and that's perfectly fine for a lot of people. Maybe most people) and is like an automatic luxury sedan. It's comfortable and does most of the work for you. The Sony Xperia by comparison is more like a manual sports car. It's a bit more tricky to operate, has a learning curve and requires some effort from you but you can push it more than a sedan and is more fun. Is it for everyone?.....no. But there is no shortage of people who love a manual sports car.
    I have had the Sony Xperia 1 mark ii for about a year and a half now and I am no camera guru nor tech guru and yet I was able to figure out the manual control apps in a day. I think a lot of reviewers do a disservice to a lot of people in assuming that no one can figure anything out and that every phone must dumb every part of it's function down to the lowest common denominator. I think a LOT of tech consumers are much smarter than that.
    After a year and a half of use I have found the camera system to be pretty good. In the sense that it gives me what I want. Full manual control and natural looking pictures. I had gotten into photography about three years ago and after having Samsungs and an iphone I was frustrated with the limitations of smartphones as well as the oversaturated colours of the phones I had been using and the phone essentially doing all the work. I frankly found the Xperia a bit of a revelation. It actually made me want to go out and take pictures because it makes me feel creative because I can use the total manual control to get exactly the look I want. If anything it's been a great practice at learning manual control before I buy a full frame mirrorless camera.

    I thought this video review a bit confusing for this particular phone model. This phone is targeted at AV professionals and not the normal consumers. Both because of its feature set/ technical software and its price tag. So, I don't see why be critical of its lack of ease of use given whose Sony's target buyers for this phone are I can understand criticism from the AV professional of professional controls and how they may use it but not from the normal consumer. That's like criticizing Sony's flagship alpha mirrorless camera because they didn't put a big red super easy to see AUTO button on it.
    Btw, I don't own this phone. But I know who it is for. Also, full manual is somewhat of a misnomer since it only has two physical apertures settings. It's more like a semi-manual control since the sensitivity and the shutter will have to be adjusted by the processor based on the aperture setting

    You see, that's the problem man, you're using the camera like you would use on any other phone and that's not the point of PRO-I. The sensors and the camera applications allows you to achieve quality that you can't achieve on other cameras because they lack these controls. This is specially true in low light situations. If only you're aware of this and knows what settings to change (you can just experiment for a few minutes to figure out) than you can change quality from night to day.
    Of course this doesn't makes sense for those who want the "pixel experience', but this isn't what Sony is trying to deliver. And because tubers that actually do test what these phones are able are very rare the vicious circle continues.

      People who would use these feature are also very rare. For most people, they would want to take quick shots, and for that, other high end phones would win. While for pros who are willing to take 5-10 mins to set up, they’d just use their dslr or mirrorless. There’s really almost no proper target audience who would utilize this phone. Plus, the 1 inch sensor is a gimmick, they are only using the center with an area almost just as big as sensors from other phones. The widest aperture is f2 which is worse than say the iphone 13 pro or pixel 6. So hardwarewise, it’s not actually better. It actually gathers less light than the iphone (taken from tony northrup vid). To get
      equally good shots in low light, you’d have to take longer and more stable shots. The manual controls though, are definitely great. But basically if people aren’t setting up tripods to use their phones with, the pro-i isn’t really for them, and who does that? If a photographer will bring a tripod, he’d definitely bring a proper camera.

    • @deathdoor
      @deathdoor 2 года назад +7

      @@kean4582 "While for pros who are willing to take 5-10 mins to set up"
      See, this is the problem. You don't need to be a "pro", you just need to know the phone you purchased! It takes no more than a few seconds, knowing what this camera allows you do do you can change the settings in instants naturally because you're always thinking ahead. And even when you use all setting son auto, because of the goals of this phone you have some advantages that others don't. The real time focus tracking actually works. When people actually use the focus capabilities on this phone it's actually unbeatable on those scenarios where focus is essential.
      That variable aperture isn't a gimmick. F2 is good enough (aperture is relative to sensor size) and the point is to have a smaller aperture anyway. The convenience to step down the aperture is an ever more essential feature that's missing on today's phones with big sensors.
      People are really conditioned by all the "propaganda" that insists X and Y and Z way is better that they are often blind to what their eyes are seeing. While this phone lacks the computational photography that most became used, no one noticed how excellent the video capture shown here is? At least during the day, not at the night because of the reasons I previously mentioned. With the right combination of framerate an shutter angle night videos on this phone can look as nice as the ones during the day (hard to believe but isn't far from the truth). And again, it doesn't take 5-10 minutes, it's just a matter of touching a single option with your finger, and even less, because of those projects format that this phone uses.
      It's just as hard as it yes to select night mode, the eraser mode, the panorama, the HDR, the slowmotion, etc, on other phones.

    • @kean4582
      @kean4582 2 года назад +2

      @@deathdoor if people are just handholding this, even with the right settings, it mostly is worse than other high end phones because it has worse iso, aperture and the 1 inch sensor isn’t fully utilized (it almost gets only half the light than an iphone 13 in its widest settings). Check Tony Northrup’s vid about this, it’ll only gonna be better on a tripod and doings edits after. Variable aperture is an extra feature but who’s gonna use f4 anyway? Phones with small sensor struggles more on low light, so why even use a higher aperture? Yes you can adjust your controls as perfect as possible, but you really are limited to its hardware. And again to match others iso and aperture, it needs to adjust on the shutter speed, which has side effects if only done handheld. For video, its even farther down the ranking than its photography because of worse computational photography (worse dynamic range) and stability. And thats the thing, if non pro’s are gonna use it, they’d just pick a samsung, pixel or an iphone. And with that price, they can even get an entry level apsc with those phones.

    • @deathdoor
      @deathdoor 2 года назад +5

      @@kean4582 See what I mean? You're questioning the variable aperture not understanding how and WHEN it could useful. You're repeated much of that "propaganda" I keep mentioning citing other phones with "bigger sensors", "wider apertures", etc. Of course, you're always limited buy the hardware, but hardware is not enough, the software is equally as important. Curiously enough you recognize this when you mention all the others doing "computational photography". Why can't you then recognize the good parts of the software on the Xperias? Like I mentioned those controls allows you to do a few things that you can't easily do and not with the same quality on other phones.
      There's one video that shows what I'm trying to say.
      Search "Xperia 1ii vs iPhone 12 Pro CAMERA TEST!" bu the channel "James Lavish".
      It's nice to be able to just point and shoot and rely on the "computational" algorithms, but on most phones the result can be a bit too artificial, with that old "HDR Look". And these algorithms and lack of controls actually prevents you from photography in certain ways, it's also limiting as you can see on that video.

    No-no, not another bias video again? "But, but to be honest?" This entire video is a setup all the way, a Sony bash masqueraded as a review. I feel you placed Sony on a pedestal, only to flatter and possibly trash it. Every single compliments resolved in flattery; besides I feel this review is a bit late, there are way much better reviews out there; beside isn't this video review a bit late to the party? It's 2022 already. I recommend anyone to definitely get more opinions on this. I applaud you for the work it took to figure the phone; however, you aimed it in wrong direction and left it incomplete with many half truths. Those of us who actually daily drive it, think otherwise. How about those thin bezels, that keep focus on the screen and many more. It's like you could give it full credit for anything without taking back.
    I would add that, although this may not be for everyone, Sony has other viable options, such as the Xperia 1 III or 5 for even smaller form factor; as the Pro-i was geared towards those who want a little more, although not limited to. Guys the there's nothing wrong with the phone. I'm not really sure what the purpose of this video is, other than to make it seem less desirable. Generally, products made in Japan cost more, perhaps due to labor but there's an unmatched quality associated with that too. There is nothing trivial about it it.
    This video makes more sense when applied to this review, rather than the product absolutely.
    I couldn't take anything away from this video, other than features being conditional and problematic about it.
    I conclude, that many folks are actually grateful for this iteration of a product, and in addition photography, is more about being in control; not the other way around. Those cons you mentioned, are by no means a weakness. This phone is simply, way above average and for those are willing to be creative. I am afraid this video is contentious to be the least inspirational review, IMHO. Does anyone else catch that? It's such a, far from candid rhetoric. It was a hard listen in, to be honest. So yes, please check the format. That was your first problem, because if you did format it, you would see how it measures up to the competition. Sony actually leads the way.

    Comparing the Pro-I to a camera is a tough comparison because a camera is designed solely for shooting photos and videos. In contrast, the Pro-I is a complete media tool.
    I would compare the Pro-I to an iPhone instead. I use my iPhone 14 Pro on a daily basis to edit short clips and publish video content for TikTok and IG Reels.
    Both platforms' ideal video frame is vertical which is very troublesome to film on a camera as most tools are not designed for vertical filming. things like gimbal and button placement.
    The main problem I faced with the iPhone 14 Pro was the battery life and memory space. Tho there is iCloud which automatically syncs videos to the cloud. I can't use it on the go as the battery life spent and data taken is too heavy for 4k 60 fps videos even when I'm on a 5G connection.
    Delete videos on the iPhone does not instantly increase the space on the iPhone. stupidly frustrating when I have to film back-to-back basketball games in 1 day and the only way to save the files on the alternative devices would be to use airdrop to transfer the files which might get an error if the file size is too huge.
    The Pro-I have a MicroSD slot which can be used for video enthusiast to swap out immediately if the storage is full and transferring files to an iPad or Laptop through a micro-SD card is faster and more convenient than using Airdrop.
    Not to mention the ability to film in 4k 120 fps as compared to the iPhone 4k 60 fps. Still, it does not resolve the battery life issue I have with my iPhone 14 Pro. Seeing that the Video monitor is attached through a USB C, Not sure if it can be both charged by a power bank and still connected to the video monitor. Similarly to my iPhone if I use a power bank, I can't use an external mic at the same time.

    Of course owners of it enjoy it.. its a great phone.
    I was almost put off by reviews like this.
    Luckily I found a few reviews by photography enthusiasts and found a different story. This phone is designed for people that enjoy "photography" on a mobile phone not for everyday take out of pocket aim and shoot.
    Im not saying that other phones cant take good photos but if you like a more realistic photography experience the Pro-I is a great phone with great image quality.
    I love waking around with a tripod, composing , dailing in my settings and getting the best image i can iut of this camera.
    I own a few cameras but I enjoy trying to get the best out of this thing , its fun.

With Sony they will just cut the product off, or change their approach completely, leading in a big loss of interest from consumers. it's just that it feels like they are going in to the same directions of HTC and LG, which is not good

    I think Sony has some fundamental confusion. Why make a vlog monitor when they can just include a higher quality front facing camera? Why completely focus on manual adjustment and not have any AI option even on basic mode? Because if you have to make so many adjustments and have a tripod to get a decent low light photo, might as well just do it with a real camera and get even better results. I support them for continuing to give consumers hardware that other manufacturers have forgotten, but I’d be lying if I said other phones and other cameras on those phones, along with the execution, isn’t better. Samsung S21 shooting in ExpertRAW produces great, natural looking results too, so you can’t even argue for Sony on that “natural” aspect anymore.

    • @stevensonnwokenkwo3281
      @stevensonnwokenkwo3281 2 года назад +1

      Perhaps they would do such with the next model, but for now a lot of us prioritize those thin bezels, uninterrupted look; "mama mia! mua!!" I give Sony tons of bonus points for that and don't mind the lower res on the front facing. Everyone else seems to be struggling with the their front facing camera placement, and bio metric fingerprint sensor too. At least they gave a solution which destroys competition. It's a balancing act, as with most things in life. I think in the long run they end up catering to many groups, as opposed to having an all in one device. I remember they had a VCR which had everything you could think of, but it crumbled as a result. We can always find reason to like or dislike anything, I think this has more of the likes than dislikes if you care to add up the features. It's load with the hardware, and somewhat software too; there a few app you wont be seeing any where soon. As far as AI, that's software, and can be added at future updates. You can't say so with hardware. If you wait long enough, they'll meet your needs. I know I waited ten years, and they seem to have met a fair number of my check boxes.... Yes there are many great phones out there, which is why this shouldn't be a problem yeah? Yes the Samsung S line up and notes series are all respectable. Both of my Parents have Samsung phone, and I'm so happy for them. They take great photos and share with the family. I am blown away by their photos, at times. But this is different, it isn't for them and I wont recommend it to them. I will give them Samsung all day or even iPhone, I know they will be well taken care off. Some things are better experienced than explained. Cheers!!.

    What NONE of the reviewers mention is the atrocious Xperia System update process. Sony could learn a thing or two had they really 'studied' the competition. Huge disappointment ... considering the Price Point.

      I haven't heard about this. What is the issue? Some people have reported the update gets stuck/takes a long time?

    I think it needs some growing pains to realize it’s true potential.

      Just get a god damn DSLR boom problem solve, no need to get this overpriced trash. The biggest improvement they made was having the camera app crash on you after 15 minutes so you can be spared the embarrassment of using this phone.
      If they are lucky enough in the next 5 yrs maybe Sony would finally appear on the top 20 list of best smartphone maker company...I really hope they can atleast sold 100 phone a year now that would be record breaking for them.
      If this keeps up maybe its time for Sony to hang the gloves and stick on creating a next level over priced televisions.

    I'm waiting for Sony to make a one-camera phone that does everything from wide to macro to zoom.
