  • "We oughtn't to lose sight of the power which these devices give, if any government or individual wants to manipulate people"
We are on the cusp of a technological revolution. Advancements in mechanical engineering have enabled us to produce machines that can move, manipulate objects, see, hear and even speak. Computer technology has progressed to the point where tiny machines are capable of logic. It isn't a huge leap to imagine that we will soon be able to create moving, thinking, machines in our own image.
Raymond Baxter looks at the latest developments in artificial intelligence, considers just how far away we are from truly intelligent machines, and what the implications might be if we do create such machines.
Joining Raymond in the studio are computer expert Dr B.V. Bowden of the Manchester College of Science and Technology and Ferranti computer programmer Valerie Harris, who demonstrate the fundamentals of computing.
This clip is from Machines Like Men, originally broadcast 30 August, 1962.
