I absolutely love this film. I use it with my students who are learning English as a foreign language to make them aware of Ireland, its languages, and its culture.
Looking at the pub scene, it’s actually quite sad. The bartender (along with a lot of Irish people) doesn’t understand Irish. We Irish people as a nation have become so adapted to English and even worse, a lot of young Irish people aren’t very interested in learning it anymore. The majority of us don’t even know our anthem word for word. We should be very proud of our culture and do our best to keep it alive.
i’m not irish but this has become one of my favourite short films of all time. it reminds me of learning swedish and finnish as a canadian who isn’t swedish or finnish, going there, and bc i spoke english amongst travelmates, people wouldn’t practice swedish or finnish with me until i could prove i spoke it well and with near-accentless speech. of course, there’s the underlying issue of irish having become lost by many of ireland’s people due to occupation and the dominance of anglophone culture in media and such, but it’s a beautiful language and hell, i might try to learn it. does anyone have any good resources? i’m pretty good at picking up languages, but i need more than just duolingo. anyway, thanks so much for uploading this film so i could enjoy it based off the comments section of an irish youtuber who uploaded a video explaining cáca milis to his audience. they spoke highly of this one, and damn, i’m happy i looked it up!
My forefather's name is _'Mullen',_ which as far as I can tell, is of Irish origin (it may also have Anglo-Saxon and/or Welsh roots, but my research is a bit hazy on that). It makes me want to learn Irish but it seems to be such a complicated and exotic language... This film helps give me a bit of inspiration for trying to learn it.
Conas atá sibh? .. would be understood but I think in Connemara they might go with ... Cén chaoi an bhfuil sibh? Good film though. I watch it about every 6 months or so to test how much I understand when Irish is spoken, I think I can go to all Irish language movies now and maybe understand 30% or better.
Bhi me i Alba sleibhte. Ta an fhios agam fearna as Alba thiar abair Gailidhg agus Gaidhlig is na Gaeilge. Bhi me abair coupla bhfocail na h Gaeilge (Dia dhuit, se an la milis etc.) ach an sean fear duirt as Bearla: Gabh mo leithsceal, ni feidir liom abair Danish.
Is deacair a rá. Tá blas Bleá Cliath le cloisteáil go cinnte ach áirím blas na Síne ann chomh maith céanna. Tá sé thall i gConamara ansin faoi dheireadh an scannáin, so is meascán mearaí é
I'm so glad he found a library in China that could loan him a decent Irish Language course book and CD
What a little gem of a film ❤
