dear nutn, i saw this video for the first time a few months ago. I have always carried a basic kit but i decided to upgrade. I purchased many more advanced supplies and watched many simple first aid training videos. anyways today at work (i work construction so im outside) I witnessed a horrible head on. Because of you I was prepared and able to get to an injured man and use hemostats to stop arterial bleeding in his lower arm. it took emergancy services over 20 m to get there. Your video may have saved this mans life. thanks nutn

I travel that canyon daily. I still hear of fatal accidents up and down that canyon. In fact watching this video helped me make my mind up and not to be one of those wallflowers when a scary situation occurs. I found myself in that situation while parked near a freeway in California. I heard a boom that sounded like a bomb went off. I ran to where I could see what the noise was from and saw a CRX that looked like a crushed soda can. I froze I couldn't bring myself to look in the car. I know what it feels like to leave the scene of a tragic event and beat yourself up for not doing more. Never again, word up TNP.

Nutnfancy - You have inspired more people than you know. You are a true hero in every sense of the word. You saved lives that day, and because of videos like this, you have probably saved many more than you know indirectly. I want to thank you for all the hard work that you have done, are doing, and hopefully will continue to do in the future. I can personally speak that you have inspired me to strive every day to become a sheepdog. Thank you once again, and god bless.

I'm shocked that people were standing around doing nothing while a little boy was bleeding out in the road. Wow! You're right though. People process things differently and many excuse themselves from trying to help by making up excuses. They are nice people in every other respect that just can't function in a crisis. I'm with you. I'd never be able to live with myself if I could have helped and didn't. Especially in a case like this where there isn't even any danger to you in helping. Even if my help didn't change the result, the fact that I did all I could would matter to me.
Good for you for doing the right thing!

I'm a 13 year old Second Class Boy Scout and my dad is an Eagle Scout and a retired police officer and retired fire fighter and now works as a public safety officer at a college in a nearby city and he still sees some of his friends on the police department when they have a drug bust or when he bumps into them on or near campus and I got his American heart association medical book from when he was a firefighter and I read that 5 times before I even got that far into scouts and I have read it about 20 times currently, I'll add you on google plus and post pics of the medical book and my first aid kit(s) for scouts

Hey Nutn. I watch your videos often and love them. I am a Police Officer in Utah not far from Provo canyon, it is amazing the amount of fatal accidents that happen there. I constantly see what you describe with people not acting in situations like this. I like you, cant even comprehend not doing SOMETHING to help them, not just as a Police Officer but as another person. I love your videos, thank you and keep them comin'.

Thanks Nutnfancy. My search & rescue team and I were on our way to northern WI this fall to help with a missing child search. En route we happened on an overturned vehicle laying on the freeway. The single occupant had been the victim of a hit and run where she rolled multiple times and landed in oncoming traffic. We found the same crowd of people milling about but we had the mindset to respond (we aren't professionals), hacked through the windshield, assessed the situation and got help.

When I was in my 20's livng in Utah I was flying out at Point of the Mountain by the highway when there was a single car accident involving a young mom and her infant baby. I made sure 911 was contacted and ran over to do what I could.
I saw the same thing - everyone standing around doing nothing. I was very angry but didnt understand that they were in shock and incapable. I knew only the most basic first aid and had no kit but thank God they both survived.

Sad, but real. Thanks for posting. After stopping a few times to render aid myself, a few years ago I got certified and worked as an EMT so I could do more if needed. One of the times (before I was EMT) a guy crossing the road was hit by a car and was laying in the middle of the road near an intersection. Traffic was stopped by the light and people looked out the window of their vehicles while waiting for the light to change. No one got out to check or assist. My wife and I pulled over to help.

Thank you for telling this story. It can be very hard for a lot of people to act in an emergency, maybe because they don't know what to do or how to help. The bystander effect is a very real part of human psychology. However these people can help the sheepdog, do not be afraid to tell bystanders to go for help, call 911, hold a bandage, fetch gear or whatever.
Point at someone and single them out with a task and they will very likely do it. Some people just need a little direction.

I live and work minutes from this location. That new road construction seemed to take a decade. I remember driving up that canyon and around that blind corner with my family before the new road. It's certainly much safer now.
The key to CPR and first aid is practice. You can learn that stuff, and forget it quickly without a refresher course (I have). This vid motivates me to re-learn and stay current. Thanks!

Amazing how core memories teach us to be better prepared and better people. As a retired soldier and special agent, I know what it is like to react and how frustrating it can be when people fail to react. The motto of Army CID is "Do What Has To Be Done". I still live by that motto. We all should.

this winter on my way to work @ 5am I found an over turned car. I had to take a deep breath before going the car. I remember saying to myself, God I hope there's nobody in it. But I knew I had to check.I crawled down the embankment, emergency kit in hand to have a look. It's dark, cold, I'm the only one around. Nobody was in the car. You don't if you're going to be the sheepdog until your moment comes, then and only then do you find out. 1st aid & CPR trained cuz of vids like this. Thx nuttn

Great video! As a medic with 15 years exp I just want to add a few tips to anyone who stops to help. First keep safe. Position your vehicle so as to block lanes, or back far enough to warn around a bend. Too many times people have been killed or hurt when they got out to help and got hit by another car. Second, don't move people unless the cars on fire or going to go underwater or off a cliff... Third, don't move dead people unless they block the way to people who need help.

Life lessons are tough sometimes. A relativley small percentage of the population is able to respond to situations such as this. A slightly larger % can act if someone else can organize and direct others to assist. The rest are in shock and cannot respond even if it were their own life in danger. You did the best you could with what you had and made the right decisions. You make all of us better by sharing your experiences and wisdom. Carry on buddy.

I'm a FF/Paramedic and you really hit home with the importance of first responders doing something/anything..... The golden hour starts at the time of the accident and EVERYTHING people do before we get there makes a HUGE difference in the mortality rate! Kudos to you for stressing that importance!

Great story to hear about and help people prepare. I could relate to that little boy with the head injury. Cracked my head when I was younger, you could see my skull. I remember when I was at the scene of a pretty bad shark attack age 12 at the beach and there was a girl bleeding profusely from the location of the bite. I was absolutely disgusted by how the people were reacting. I believe there is absolutely a need for more people with the reserve and determination to take charge and help resolve even the worst situations like Nutnfancy. All the best to him and all his family and friends.

Some people just don´t have it in them. I worked previously on a cruising ship and I was in charge of evacuation team. In my team was one woman who wet beserk even for slightest reason. When we once had a shootout on ship (two criminals shooting eachother) we had to evacuete passangers and she wasn´t able to walk, she was just hysterically crying. I know that she is not bad person for that but I lost my respect for her.
Anyway Nutnfancy, great job and great video again.

Starting at 10 years old as a cub-scout, moving through territorial and regular army, being a prison-officer and then a first-aider at work I had almost 30 years of preparation for first-aid before I really needed it. I witnessed a guy run-down by a car and was the first to get to him and hold his head together; blood shooting out all over. The truest sign that I was doing it right was the respect and space the first-responders gave me when they arrived. Prepare for it and dare to do it folks.

It's good to know and be reminded that good people are out there, thanks! My father (an ex-paramedic and now M.D.) stopped at an accident once to help, sadly enough one of the parties involved later turned around and attempted to sue him... I don't remember the situation if there was a death, there are so many instances (in Florida) of patients just dieing from old age or a nurse somewhere along the line making a mistake which results in my father (presumably the one with money) being sued..

I was in a bad accident in '86. I was badly injured (spinal cord). Only one guy stopped and sent for help. There was not much to do medically, but staying with me for the 20+ minutes waiting for help was invaluable. It probably prevented shock and at least made it less traumatic. Victims are scared, hurting and confused and if the most you can do is be there then you're better than the car that didn't stop. He and I are still friends 23 years later.

Great job Nutnfancy, I know the feeling. Here in Jamaica I was just seconds behind an accident also. My friend and I had to pull the survivors out. The car ran under the rear of a parked truck and off the road into a gully. the roof was literally "peeled" off. I took them to the hospital in the back of my pick up truck. I could not recognize the passenger. the hospital needed an I.D. of the patient. I questioned the driver and realized she was my Mom's co-worker's daughter. I knew her.

I been watching the TNP for about a year now and this is my first comment because this video was so touching. I love the sheep dog concept! I just can't see how people could stand around knowing there are multiple people with life threatening wounds! Like I am astounded at that fact. I am ecstatic that there are people like me prepared and willing to go into whatever comes about. I know there are blood and guts. But there are also lives at stake! being a volunteer fireman is like doing...

It only takes a few seconds to dial 911. But you may spend the rest of your life waiting for the help. Nutn, thank you for being you. I hope I never have to find my self in that situation.

EVERY little bit could help save a life! I carry a little of everything in my truck JUST IN CASE. For this same reason. you never know what you will find. I have a First aid kit (nothing as good as some), Fire Extinguisher, Fire Blankets, etc.. I would rather attempt to save ONE LIFE then to sit around and let someone die knowing I did NOTHING! I like how you think, your kids are very lucky to have a father like you!
