Maybe someday Salem, Oregon will allow people below its streets and share its shady past. Everywhere from the Oregon State Hospital to the river and even to below the now closed Fairview Training Center. Thanks to a good friend who was a night nurse at the old Oregon State Hospital, in the early 80's my wife and I were among the fortunate few who have walked these tunnels and seen the horrors of Salem 's sordid past. The chains on the walls, the small cells in which inmates were locked below the floors of the State Hospital, the graves marked with simple wooden crosses, large rocks painted with 4 digit numbers or simply large areas where perhaps many souls with no grave markings at all. The tunnels near the river and downtown area that were used for transporting goods to the state hospital, fairveiw and 1 of the well known prison facilities. Many residents of salem live blissfully unaware of the tunnels that lay directly below their living rooms. Stop looking to their attics for those things that go bump in the night, start looking below their feet. Some owners have no idea that at one time their basement may have even connected to these tunnels especially some of stately homes in the area of Chemeketa and Center Streets near the State Hospital. Come on Salem give it up ... its time to admit to your true history for Portland and Astoria are not the only Oregon cities with a jaded past!
Shanghaing began in San Francisco then was outlawed there so the practice moved up to Portland. Actually it began in Britain across the Atlanta in the colonial era.
Been to the Shanghai tunnels....not scary at all. Was interesting though. And very very short tour! I know they have alot more tunnels there but you cant tour them for some strange reason its a real piss off....i live just across the river in Washington.
I think that the same thing may have happened in Providence RI there is a tunnel network under the city that rumor has leads to the port. But I can't find any documentation on them.
