A review and running of Lionel's new 3-Rail O-Scale Nickel Plate Road ALCO PA/PB Diesels. More videos on the Eric's Trains RUclips channel and at www.ericstrains.com.
As far as opening door on the front, many railroads welded the front doors shut due to an issue in the event of a head on collision or grade crossing accident, the door would be blown in and debris would fly into the cab because the doors on F and E units were made to open into the cab rather than out like on the front of the PA. This safety concern lead to many (but not all) railroads welding the front doors shut, so in some cases its prototypical the front doors don't open!
Eric over the last year or so my father and I have watched and followed you and I have to say your the best.. My dad is not a RUclips video watcher but you got him hooked. Thanks again you do a great job BFIMO
Looks good Eric! I did most of the R&D for MTH's most recent Premier Line version of the NKP ALCO PA. MTH went with the as delivered silver and blue paint scheme as they already did the later white and blue in the past. However we were able to convince them to make 16 white and blue versions as store exclusives. I was involved with the R&D for the NKP Premier passenger cars too with three store exclusive "City sleepers" and two heavyweight RPOs.
About the 9 volt battery, the TMCC engines had a section in the manual about that. It's not mandatory but it was so that the sound system won't be interrupted. I installed 9 volt batteries on all my TMCC engines as a precaution if anything screws up. Best thing is that the 9 volt battery gets charged while the electrical power is on. They don't last forever, but they can last for up to 10 years or so while sitting inside the engine. After those 10 years, you got to change the battery to avoid corrosion and leakage.
Eric, Great model of the Alco PA. The horn is pretty close to a Alco PA horn and bell. Lionel has had some great models with legacy. LOVE THE LAYOUT MAN.
Eric, Santa Fe also purchased b units. The PA`s on film have a single horn that sounds like an F units. Lionel`s earlier Legacy PA`s have the correct horn. There are plenty of videos of Santa Fe PA`s and PB`s on line.
Thanks for bring back some fond memories for me. As a kid growing up in Conneaut, OH in the 1950's & early 1960's I watched the Bluebirds pulling NKP's passenger trains which were always spotless. When delivered from ALCO I believe they sported a single note air horn. NKP eventually retro fitted them with either 5 or 6 chime horns so Lionel's version, sound-wise, is not correct. Also, later in the PA's career NKP shops relocated the bell into a specially made niche on the left side of the nose underneath the angled numberboard. Their reason was that the bell wasn't as audible as they thought it should be in it original location. Thanks again!
Great video as usual, Eric! This is a spectacular set of engines. I agree with your opinion on the paint job, really extraordinary. I noted with interest that the units just barely clear some of your tunnel portals! I loved watching the exhaust smoke curling out of the tunnel during the passage of the entire train, very realistic!
Hi Eric, another great video. I have always been a big fan of Alco PS's and I love your train of many colors. Keep the videos coming I would like to see more of the layout in the future...Frank
Great locomotives! I am an ALCO-holic... lol.. I have the earlier Lionel production of the D&H PA's. The new features are nice. Thanks for the video review!
I got my first Legacy diesel a few months ago and love it. I have the Legacy "lite" as they call it. I also pre-ordered the Class A N&W Lionmaster steam. Can't wait. Your channel has influenced my interest in Lionel engines. Most of my stuff is MTH. Keep the reviews coming!
Back in the Erie-Lackawanna days I remember seeing ALCO PAs lashed to EMD E8s for an AA combination. It was pretty interesting. The PAs were often still in their green Erie livery while the E8s sported the DL&W grey & maroon. Lackawanna never had PAs but after the merger the Erie units found their way onto former DL&W tracks. Erie didn't buy any B units. l'd like to see a model railroad with a PA/E8 lash up some time.
Like most other new Lionel engines...diesel and steam, regardless of the road name, Rich Melvin's voice is used for the crew talk. Nothing wrong with Rich's voice being used especially with this engine. However, using the same crew talk in every engine only benefits Lionel as a cost savings and easier to manufacture for them, but just like the same horn being used in every diesel it has gotten to be monotonous and It would be nice if Lionel would change it out.
+kstrains It would be more fitting if Lionel asked Doyle McCormick (owner of NKP 190) to do the crew talk. Maybe Lionel should do that with the GS-4's coming out. Maybe it's not to late to get Steve Lee or DUMD DUMD ED DICKINS to do the crew for the new FEF's. That's just me.
I am not entirely sure about this, but I believe that this particular model of this locomotive was featured in the Scooby-Doo where are you episode: Decoy for a dognapper. I am not sure if it is this model or an E-7 locomotive, but both look very similar.
I think another part of AlCo's downfall too was the stab in the back by GE who helped them develop most of their diesels including the PA and then decided "Hey! Let's enter the locomotive market even though nobody wants to see us do it! It'll be great for us!" Sadly it was great for GE but not for AlCo.
nice addition eric , I don't own any B units on my layout , so question on them , how do you know which direction they are going on the track , hate to pair them up with a A unit and have it take off in the opposite direction at first , so what is the FRONT of a B unit
+sparky107107 The B unit is marked at the bottom F and/or R so you know which way to run the unit. The A unit is also marked at the front with a F. Yo may also notice a L or R on the front of a unit for the right or left side of a locol.Scott
Hey Eric, if it's possible, you should find an engineer figurine and paint him to look like Doyle McCormack (owner of the 190) and use him as the model's engineer! XD That'd be slick! And regarding the horns, I believe Lionel's new SD40 has a different more accurate sound to it. Hopefully they can keep it up.
It's a beautiful set but I have a mechanics ear and the motor is sounding like its missing the turbo spooling it may or may not be coming across properly but that's just my thinking
I agree with you Eric - the horn on this nice set SUCKS! By comparison, I bought Lionel's ATSF ALCO PA1 (18952) - a single A unit - in 1997 equipped with Signal Sounds and a single chime horn. The next year I bought its companion PB1 unit (18965) with both SIgnal Sounds and Rail Sounds including a multi-chime horn. Suffice to say, when you run the PA/PB together in Command mode and press the horn button it's got a great multi-chime sound (my favourite of all my diesels). What my set lacks in detail it more than makes up for in the sound of the horn, and it's unfortunate that the beautiful NKP AA set doesn''t have a similar outstanding horn.
Eric, I counted.....you said "🅿️" 108 times, or a word that started with a 🅿️ronounced 🅿️ sound lmao. Sorry I had to entertain myself if I was going to last the 33 mins! Lol. When you said Lionel 🅿️lease, 🅿️lease, 🅿️lease I was fist pumping💪🏼 because that got you over the 100 🅿️'s mark. Lmfao! Just having fun with you, nice 🅿️retty nice 🅿️-A's and 🅿️Aint jobs! 😂😂😂😭😭😭
How would you count all of those letters for 33 minutes in the video. That must be really hard to do for such a long time because you would have to count each and every one and sometimes forgetting some so you would have to estimate what you missed. And these diesels are really nice looking how did you not get distracted by the beauty of the blue and white of the colors on the engine? But still nice job on doing that task! I JUST MADE A PARAGRAPH WITHOUT USING THE LETTER 🅿️!!!
Awesome review Eric! I agree, this horn needs to stop. Honestly, I don't like it. For NKP passenger cars, I recommend MTH's 20-6526. I have them and pull them behind my 765, and it looks awesome. It would look much better behind these because the paint would match. You could also use them for the 765. I think that Lionel should have put a sound system into the B unit and the non-powered A unit, with just a prime mover sound so it sounds like those units have motors.
+Adam Swindell I believe that PA-3's did not officially exist. The term "PA-3" was a name given by rail fans to PA-2's that had been fitted with certain upgrades.
This is a question for anybody who knows about NKP's diesels but when did the NKP switch from a blue and silver scheme to a blue and white like the ones that are painted on the models in the video?
Hi Lusankya18: To answer your question regarding the NKP Bluebird's colors allow me to quote from Kevin Holland's book Nickel Plate Road Passenger Service The Postwar Years. On page 71 is written: On the 7 units delivered in Dec.1947 the color was specified as "Nickel" and was in fact a metallic silver. It weathered quickly in service and was deemed unsuitable for continued use. On the last 4 units (delivered in March 1948) the color was changed to an aluminum-gray with little or no metallic pigment. All other earlier PA's were repainted with this color which appeared to be a white or very light gray. If you are interested in these engines and the NKP this book is a fantastic read chock full of wonderful pictures both B&W and color. It is a great reference tool in my opinion and is available through many online book retailers including ABE Books.
+G- Man There is also an ATSF one being restored in Frisco,TX, #59. There are a few in Mexico as well, but they are in pieces, and will likely be scrapped.
G-man, a total of four PA's survive in North America. NKP 190 was D&H #18 (AT&SF 62L). The unit in Texas for restoration was D&H #16 (AT&SF #59). Two Units are in Mexico, FNM DH19 was D&H #19 (AT&SF 66L, nee AT&SF 54B), FNM DH17 was D&H #17 (AT&SF 60L). The D&H had the units upgraded by MK in 1975. They lost the 16-244's series engines prior to shipment {note #17 had been modified to 12-244 by the D&H}. MK installed 2400HP ALCo 12-251F series engines along with other internal modifications. The 17 & 19 currently reside at a museum in Mexico. The fifth unit is in Brazil, #600. Several attempts to cosmetically restore the unit have taken place.
That paint job is by far the best feature. Gorgeous engine. I'm not the biggest fan of the sound. I feel like the creaks and squeals are too repetitive and intrusive, distracting in a way. Wouldn't mind if the horn was a little lower in pitch, but it is what it is.
FANTASTIC review as always Eric!!!!!!!! AWESOME engines and they sound great but I have to agree with you on that horn LOL it's awful in my opinion. That's why I don't pre-order Lionel diesels anymore, I like to hear them first and then make my purchase, most likely different road names have different horns. Anyways, thanks for the video bud and have a great one!
Thanks Eric for the review. I dont believe that Lionel's horns is cost problem. like Athern with the led's lights. I think the sound engineer is just plain pig headed. I am with Bill Yates with the BTO . I think the MTH version may be a better choice .
I don't believe NKP used B units with the ALCO PA. MTH and Lionel often give you a B unit even if the railroad didn't use them. If you want to be prototypical you have to delete the B unit from the set. I guess they make nice shelf ornaments or something. Rio Grande used ALCO PA B units as did Southern and Santa Fe. Possibly Union Pacific, too. Erie and Lackawanna did not use them, but you get a B unit anyway if you buy the set. Same for GM E8s. That's too bad about the problematic engine used in these. Most steam locomotive manufacturers had a very hard time transitioning into diesel manufacturing, but ALCO fared better than the others.
I honestly like MTH's horn better for the PA's - I purchased the Railking verisions - so none of the bells and whistles that you see on the Lionel or MTH Premier and Legacy....but the PS3 horn is nice.....
As far as opening door on the front, many railroads welded the front doors shut due to an issue in the event of a head on collision or grade crossing accident, the door would be blown in and debris would fly into the cab because the doors on F and E units were made to open into the cab rather than out like on the front of the PA. those locomotives look majestic in that paint scheme and they sound wonderful
Wow what a beautiful, fantastic diesel loco, my favourite colour Blue! I got to get this beauty Eric, thanks for a great demo my friend 😎🇬🇧
Eric,

These are by far my favorite diesels
great presentation of this vintage diesel A-B-A unit set

it's nice that Rich Melvin's voice was used for the NKP PA/PB, considering he is (now was) the senior engineer for 765 :3
Eric, you always have great trains, and layouts! Your information is most useful! Thanks for the video and all your research!
Hi Eric, another great video. I have always been a big fan of Alco PS's and I love your train of many colors. Keep the videos coming I would like to see more of the layout in the future...Frank
very cool Eric:) you have a very very nice layout:) Now they need to do the little brother the FA/FB Alco:)
Great locomotives! I am an ALCO-holic... lol.. I have the earlier Lionel production of the D&H PA's. The new features are nice. Thanks for the video review!

What a great looking set.
Lionel has really made some great rains this year but they better stop with that horn!!!!!!!!!
The 2 railroads that had the most orders of the ALCO PA is the Santa Fe (28 units), and the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad (27 units).
How do people unlike Eric's videos? They are awesome
Love the diesels and the backstory Eric! Having said that, I do wish that Lionel would change up the crew talk sounds and horn every now and then.
Did you notice Rich Melvin's voice in the crew talk?
Like most other new Lionel engines...diesel and steam, regardless of the road name, Rich Melvin's voice is used for the crew talk. Nothing wrong with Rich's voice being used especially with this engine. I'm not a big fan of Diesel engines but I really like this one, smoke units seem a little op but its still nice..
I am not entirely sure about this, but I believe that this particular model of this locomotive was featured in the Scooby-Doo where are you episode: Decoy for a dognapper. I am not sure if it is this model or an E-7 locomotive, but both look very similar.
Hi I love that they're putting the Nathan p5 on every locomotive cuz that's my favorite airhorn instead of that crappy K5
Hey Eric the pa pb set is cool I wonder if I should start o scale
I wonder if we'll ever get black smoke fluid?
maybe add black food dye but it might not work
+Joseph Cavagnaro I would think black food coloring would only stain the wick and smoke unit. I don't think it would vaporize properly.
yeah I do too
I would say use black dye but it might not evaporate black or it would gert stuck in the smoke unit.
I was gonna say maybe food coloring and then realized that that is what everybody else said. Lol.
Great looking set. If this was a Western Maryland engine that horn would be prototypical.
In case any of you didn't notice, the voice on the startup sequence was Rich Melvin!
That thing is beautiful.
nice video of your model trains.
The horn sounds like a sick harmonica
nice addition eric , I don't own any B units on my layout , so question on them , how do you know which direction they are going on the track , hate to pair them up with a A unit and have it take off in the opposite direction at first , so what is the FRONT of a B unit

Yeah, you tell 'em Eric, get rid of that junk horn! Great review as always bro!
+Matthew Gorres I agree, it's a good horn but very overused.
+Matthew Gorres How can you tell it's an old cast P5??
+TDF LINES by listening to it
RailFan Jake The only horn I know that sounds like the prototype is there version of the K5LLA on the NS ES44AC heritage units. SO THERE!!
+Matthew Gorres I thought it sounds like an M5. But now it sounds like a hybrid lol.
I like that horn. I can picture it being on an F40PH. What kind of horn is that?
Hey Eric, if it's possible, you should find an engineer figurine and paint him to look like Doyle McCormack (owner of the 190) and use him as the model's engineer! XD
That'd be slick!

911 what's your emergency? Yea there's a fire across the street, fireman, where a the fire? Eric oh its just my Alco PA. XD

ericstrains
Ahh I see. Thanks for the correction.
+ericstrains that makes sense
Great video Eric!
Eric, so they use the same digital sound sample of a diesel horn for all the diesels. I thought they used actual sounds from the actual train.
Too bad that lionel wont let you select a handful of options for the horn.
Paint scheme is awesome!!!!!
Great review Eric!
best diesel locomotive I have ever seen. : )
when will you do the Milwaukee Road F 7s
Eric how's the winter weather? I heard Atlanta is having flight trouble.
hey Eric my uncle worked on the Nickel plate railroad
wow train's are my favorite
That horn doe
AHHH that damn horn!
+Jackson Railfan GP35s have the same horn too.
Cool locomotive how much did that one cost
0:47 are those streamlined santa fe passenger cars just above the hood of the A Unit?
PS: I searched on the internet for available Legacy PA/PBs. The only ones I could find were a used UP A-A set on EBay for about $750.
I would think so since the set was made almost 7 years ago.
This is a question for anybody who knows about NKP's diesels but when did the NKP switch from a blue and silver scheme to a blue and white like the ones that are painted on the models in the video?

Santa Fe and Delaware and Hudson are a far prettier PA paint scheme IMHO
Nice thought
I'm aware about the NKP 190 but I'm not familiar with the other surviving PA's. Can anyone fill me in? Also nice review!
Anyways, thanks for the video bud and have a great one!
i love the video
You have an Empire State Express set?
Cannot agree with you on GPS. Several areas appear to show the upper blue, encroaching on the white mid line.
what is your strongest model train
can you run a full powered setup with 2 powered A units and powered B unit?
Thanks
Which horn is on that engine?
The same horn that's on Lionel's latest SD40-2 and on their NS Heritage SD70ACes.
How do you measure the pulling power of the engines?
Runaway train Productions He explains in episode 14 of his video train blog series: The Eric’s Trains Video Blog.
Thanks Eric for the review. I dont believe that Lionel's horns is cost problem. like Athern with the led's lights. I think the sound engineer is just plain pig headed. I am with Bill Yates with the BTO . I think the MTH version may be a better choice .
How fast is the engine
Lionel needs to come up with smoke units that can do black smoke if they're going to make alco diesels, lol.
And why didn't you get the wabash!?!
A hollow coupler takes off weight as well
i really want the new york central ones
Maybe the horn was the closest to the recordings they've heard.
thats why i like mth they use realistic horns
All 3 units should have sound. You can tell that the last unit is silent.
That horn sounds exactly like a Nathan M5
This train sounded like it had a slitly different horn than the constantly used one
I live in Portland Oregon where nkp 190 is
And you need some Amtrak like bullet trains, maybe a p42
I don't believe NKP used B units with the ALCO PA. MTH and Lionel often give you a B unit even if the railroad didn't use them. If you want to be prototypical you have to delete the B unit from the set. I guess they make nice shelf ornaments or something. Rio Grande used ALCO PA B units as did Southern and Santa Fe. Most steam locomotive manufacturers had a very hard time transitioning into diesel manufacturing, but ALCO fared better than the others.
NKP did not buy any B units, but I decided to get one anyway. Doesn't really bother me.
I think the set would look nice sans the B unit, but I'm a stickler for detail! Anyway, thanks for the review. I always enjoy your videos.
I honestly like MTH's horn better for the PA's - I purchased the Railking verisions - so none of the bells and whistles that you see on the Lionel or MTH Premier and Legacy....but the PS3 horn is nice.....
Ummm... The signals are not operating again this is what the third time? But I still love the show
So I just looked at some pictures, that truck color is very off, they should be a grey color.
ugh, that horn again...
I wish Lionel would stop using that same diesel horn in every diesel. Wake up Lionel! Not every diesel has the same horn!
The only thing I don't like is the plow turns with the front truck. It makes it look to much like a toy on the curves.
603🚂😎👍
It is so blue
i thought the horn was a leslie a200 horn
I want to calibrate with you
