I wear a kilt regularly - a day kilt as well as for more formal occasions - and although day kilts are not common practice here (Edinburgh) they are not particularly uncommon either, and it is very common for kilts to be worn on formal occasions. I don't think anyone assumes I'm a tourist when I'm in my day kilt, but it does, however, attract more (friendly) comments/chat from tourists and locals alike. In general, the locals like to see anyone wearing a kilt as we're proud of our national attire, so long as it's worn 'respectfully'. It doesn't need to be worn perfectly or anything like that, but I have seen instances of tourist appearing somewhat disrespectful and locals inquisitive as to whether they are, "takin the pish?" Wear a kilt here? Absolutely! Edinburgh is renowned for it's warm hospitality and friendliness, but you'll experience an even warmer welcome if you're wearing a kilt!
This is from when I was in Scotland in 2014. I noticed that a handful of people wore them in Edinburgh, don't know if they were going to a function or what, Street performance. Then when I was in Fort William there was one person hiking. The largest group was at the Royal Highland Games. So I think it depends on what is happening at the time and where you see people in kilts. I've also have Scottish ancestors which I do own kilts and it always seems to have a good conversation over it.
They work for a variety of functions. Proper dress and casual. I wear mine mostly with a tucked in polo or smarter t shirt on a daily basis. They work for formal which is where we mostly wear them really. Why do I wear mine? My gg grandfather did, my g grandfather wore one during the Great War, my grandfather too & my father. Then back out of memory. Am I proud of it? Yes. When I was a child we’d go as a family to culloden each year and put flowers on the clan marker. All the men wore them, I had my first dram on that field. I wear one and no one would make me change otherwise. Just as with anything we should remember our country and past, respect and be honest & true when sporting them.

I would wear it. They can see me as a tourist, but that's fine, because I would be a tourist. And of course you have those people who say that the Scots don't care if you're a Scottish American, but that's because the sense of pride in heritage is different in America. Because America is so young (to those who settled here), our younger heritage is American, but before that, our origination is from whatever nations our ancestors lived in. On the other hand, Scotland is a very old country, so 'Scottishness' is a normal part of everyday life, even to those who aren't really interested in heritage, because they live in Scotland. We do not live there, so we keep the traditions alive and well.
The Highlanders who could afford to, wore woolen hose under canvas leggings, a bit like chaps, under their kilts in extreme weather, which there is plenty of. These were certainly issued to Highland regiments serving in the Americas in the 18th century
I'm Canadian born with great grandparents/grandparents from both Ireland & Scotland. My grandma owned "The Scottish Shop" in Ontario... My mom owned at least 25 kilts. I wear a kilt in Canada as daily dress just like I would jeans or a pair of shorts. I don't wear it every day, it's just in the rotation. I wear to take pride in my family heritage and ancestory. I wear it to teach my son about our family and genetic history.... To show appreciation for the past & those who have come before us... To have a connection to our past and where we came from. I wear it to spread awareness of Irish & Scottish culture, traditions & it starts lots of wonderful conversations ans creates real connections with people who share our heritage.
You can see people wearing kilts even in northern England, and it’s always just cool. I absolutely can’t help but look at their outfit in awe. It just looks like you’re either incredibly classy or on the way to an event. People like it, it’s not norm but it is good.
Most Scot's are friendly enough to not judge or be offended, It's not a common sight but we appreciate the patriotic and passionate, so if one feels happy about it, I would say do it! Most locals would be more intrigued than anything, And it's a good way to strike up a conversation with locals, We're so used to tourists all year round, Does not phase us in the slightest. My only advice is Be your self, Don't try to act like a local, If you don't understand something ask away, Our dialect is very strange, But are usually good at switching off our local Dialect, So you might find yourself in a situation where you can understand us well when talking directly, But in the next instance talk to a local in complete utter nonsense, its fair to say most will be lost in translation at some point.
When I visited Edinburgh, I was walking along the Royal Mile. A mother was practically dragging her 12-13 year old son. He was in a kilt and suit coat & tie. He was not comfortable. He obviously wanted to be elsewhere and most likely not in his kilt 😆
I wore the kilt at my friends wedding at Aberdeen first time since I am a Scot American and loved it. When we came back and decided to find my clans kilt color. Ordered from you guys for MacRae hunting modern kilt and it was well made. Thank you and I have enjoyed for many years that I only wore for special occasions only.
I wear the kilt frequently when in Edinburgh for leisure purposes....although I suppose I am a tourist, being a native Glaswegian - where I also wear a kilt in the old days when the pubs / eateries were open. You'd bee surprised about how much kilt wearing there is in the west of Scotland these days.
My sister treated me to a trip to Scotland in February 2003. While there I wore my Justus family tartan kilt quite a bit. My sister took a picture of me in my kilt as I stood at the headstone of Rob Roy McGregor's grave.
Was there ever a time in Scotland that the modern kilt was as commonplace as say blue jeans are today? If so when and why did they "go out of fashion"? If not why do we have such a fascination with kilts?
Before 1745 the traditional clans would wear kilts on a semi-regular basis as a form of identification, but they could also be worn into battle especially as many highlanders could not afford any kind of actual armour, or even other clothes. After the Jacobite rebellion (the last time Scots fought against English rule), the English outlawed many Scottish traditions such as bagpipes and tartan under penalty of death or torture, that was 1745. As Scotland become industrious, we moved past our old culture, and tartan and such became accepted again by the 1900s. And during the world wars, kilts could be found again with the highland divisions. Now they're mostly just for special occasions and dance nights. Hope that wasn't too long winded, I'm Scottish so I can't help blab on about the history ahah!
@Traditional Arts International Why are ya being so insecure and immature? Dyou no like being friendly? I was incorrect about a few things, afraid I'm only human, I'm working on my physics PhD not history. Armour was very expensive and thick jerkins made up the majority of battle wear, was my point. Just learnt from living my entire life by Culloden.
Scottish football and rugby fans when supporting the national team where kilts not them all ,but its quite common,Irish supporters wouldn't at all,but generally except for pipebands its not a thing here anyway.
What on earth are you yanks talking about. Come up to skye & you'll see many of us wearing kilts. Mostly over 35's, by that age you've stop caring what people think.
You say it like people will only talk to you if you wear a kilt, that's not so tourists stick out like a sore thumb and as soon as you open your mouth it narrows it down. Don't be afraid to ask anyone in Scotland for information, Scots like to tell people about where they live and their history, just ask.
I come from Rob Roy him self and for me wearing a kilt is to promote my Family the MacGregors I think more people should ware kilts to show off there Scottish Pride weather you look like a tourist or not ye should always ware thy kilt looks good to mate

Mt late husband would have worn a kilt in Scotland. He would also have talked to anyone who wanted to talk. He loved people, and was known for flirting with little kids in the checkout line and helping the elderly. He loved people and would have talked to the man from Mars in sign language!
I know this is an old video. But another thing that people forget is their story of why they are wearing said kilt. When people come up to them and ask things like "What clan is it"? Some people haven't got a clue and don't know what to say. That makes you look stupid. If you do have a clan history. Research it, be prone of it and tell it when asked! If you have zero histroy with a clan, but want to wear kilt. There are kilts for you also. Because if you do wear a kilt like say, the Black Watch. In Scotland they will expect you to have some ties with it like a family member was in the Black Watch regiment or something. People like a story. So have yours ready. I have 3 different kilts that I wear. All with family stories.
It’s not that you can’t wear a kilt but you’d get a few weird looks. The kilt is definitely formal wear which we hold dear. People would likely not think much of it cause we’d assume you’re going to a wedding or something but if you wear a kilt to McDonald’s you might get a couple raised eyebrows 😅 as long as you are respectful tho, no one will care
Being Scottish, we can mostly tell who is Scottish and who is a tourist when wearing a kilt, Tourists most of the time “play” with the kilt. Flowing it around and such. A Scotsman doesn’t. we love our kilts, but we only wears them for special occasions. Makes them more symbolic for us.
1:30 After spending 13 holidays in Scotland: no need to wear a kilt or do anything else to have easy conversation starters there. Scots are the easiest people to talk to, they welcome it. Except maybe in a city, quite a few of them will pass you by and greet you of their own accord. "Hiya" and "Awright?" are their common greetings. Wearing a kilt may get you more attention, but local people give you more attention anyway, than locals in, say, Germany or the Netherlands would.
is there anyone that yet prefers them for daily wear or use ? for practicality ? knew a bagpipe player that was so used to one he wore one all the time.
in Scotland? A few people wear them daily, typically in the highlands, but they're often seen as a bit eccentric for doing so. That's completely fine by us though!
Yeah you can wear it in many events Weddings Ceilidhs Hogmanay Highlands games Father's day Independence March Rugby 5 nation Sant Andrew's day Burns nights Gatherings Or just "out grid" in holiday
If you wear a kilt in Glasgow in the evening, you are identifying yourself as being an ideal target for a mugger, especially if you are South of the Clyde, and it's dark. On the bright side, at least you've got a Sgian Dubh for self defence, make sure it's a real one, not one of those that is actually a bottle opener!
Clan Gregor here. Why don't you guys have an actual Clan Gregor Tartan? The only thing you label "Gregor" isn't one of our tartans. It vaguely resembles the Glengyle pattern, but it's off and only certain people can wear it, even if it were correct. We have four, but the more important ones are the "MacGregor Red and Green" and the "MacGregor Red and Black", the latter being commonly known as the "Rob Roy" Tartan. It's just a little frustrating, that's all.
I tend to wear what I want if I like something, with certain exceptions. Would it be offensive to wear a kilt if to some if you don't look genetically Scottish?

Kids usually do that. I was the same when I was forced to wear the traditional clothes while I was a tiny kid but now I love em
Most Scots don't normally wear kilts as everyday wear because they are so much more expensive in Scotland versus in the US.
It’s just a historic garment worn for special events. You can do whatever you want tho
My sister treated me to a trip to Scotland in February 2003. While there I wore my Justus family tartan kilt quite a bit. My sister took a picture of me in my kilt as I stood at the headstone of Rob Roy McGregor's grave.
I wish more people wore Kilts in Springfield, Illinois, my hometown! 😆
I wonder what the general attitude about utility kilts would be there in Scotland...
It's the same as wearing a normal kilt , I wear my utility kilt more and keep my normal kilt for formal wear. Respect from fife Scotland.
You ask questions I can't answer.
My uncles did! Ha ha! I will if I visit because why not? Maybe I'll pair it with a tshirt that says tourist in huge letters.
From bretagne i love wearing my kilt for nice occasions
Even if your not Scottish, wear a kilt - it adds inches to your chest when the compliments start flying in !
I confirm it to you, here in France too!
The whole tourist thing makes me think of gaffigan.
“We wanna go where the locals are, where are they?”
“They’re at work.”
I wear my utilikilt on the regular. No matter what country I'm in! 🇺🇲
I come from Scottish roots and I cannot ever remember my grandfather not wearing a kilt. I completely disagree with what you said. Sorry guys!!
@AyeNaeBother or when the rugby is on
There is a time and a place for a kilt. Trews are more common amongst people for day today wear.
Only time I ware a Kilt is at the Highland games or special events.
I am curious about the Kilt Suit with the Blue colored Jacket and vest in the background...
The jacket is actually grey (it just appears to have a bluish hint): www.usakilts.com/grey-jacket-vest.html
Your answer saddens me... What's the point of it all then if it is SO out of Favor?
I come from Rob Roy him self and for me wearing a kilt is to promote my Family the MacGregors I think more people should ware kilts to show off there Scottish Pride weather you look like a tourist or not ye should always ware thy kilt looks good to mate
Same with Lederhosen in southern Germany
Do they make them for women ? I’m fascinated by Scottish culture now
it's like Thai traditional dress that many westerner seen in the tourist brochures or travelling documents, only some people wear in special occession, and another is wearing for performing or wroking.
Of Scotland football team is playing in Glasgow you will see thousands of kilts the whole weekend
Wow the rare Springfield shoutout
Great programmes guys!
Can you wear a kilt with out any Scotland history? I'm from Mexico
Of course :)
Just do your research and wear it well and with confidence and you will look great 😉
Just remember proper kilts are quite expensive.
Hey if you paid for it, you get to wear it. Do I have to be Mexican to wear a Sombrero?
I'm from sweden and there is actually a tartan from sweden
@Bjorn Goumundsen Just search for dellenkilten on google
@Bjorn Goumundsen Jeg er ikke veldig god på norsk
I wish Spain was more Involved in the Celtic traditions. Most of the northwest is Celtic.
Galicia has a national tartan "Galicia nacional".
Mt late husband would have worn a kilt in Scotland. He would also have talked to anyone who wanted to talk. He loved people, and was known for flirting with little kids in the checkout line and helping the elderly. He loved people and would have talked to the man from Mars in sign language!
First holy communions and weddings are the most common for kilts.
What kilts should you wear if your both Irish and Scottish
RIGHT ANSWER!
If you are from Seattle wear a Utilikilt.
A lot might thínk there is a football game on. Only time I wear a kilt is for weddings, the fitba or sometimes hiking abroad in Europe. (gets likes)
I have a question, what is the name of the song in your intro?
The song is "Rout of Moy" by the Scottish band Albannach. WONDERFUL musicians and even better people. :-)
@@USAKiltsOfficial Thank you
1:30 After spending 13 holidays in Scotland: no need to wear a kilt or do anything else to have easy conversation starters there.
Would it not bet nice if you could wear a kilt every day and not be treated as though you are a few tiles short
Embrace it.
@@nokoolaid Absolutely!
I took one of those DNA 🧬 tests and I’m exactly 62% African and 38% European. I’m exactly 38% Irish ☘️
is there anyone that yet prefers them for daily wear or use ? for practicality ? knew a bagpipe player that was so used to one he wore one all the time.
in Scotland? A few people wear them daily, typically in the highlands, but they're often seen as a bit eccentric for doing so. That's completely fine by us though!
@@USAKiltsOfficial I’m in the us, state of Michigan, in the Manistee National Forest.
Its like seeing a someone wearing a cowboy hat walking down Broadway in Nashville hahaha
That happened to me tonight. I also love hearing bagpipes.
Yeah you can wear it in many events
Weddings
Ceilidhs
Hogmanay
Highlands games
Father's day
Independence March
Rugby 5 nation
Sant Andrew's day
Burns nights
Gatherings
Or just "out grid" in holiday
We actually have a LOT of options for MacGregor in all weights of cloth: www.usakilts.com/advancedsearch/result/?q=Macgregor

I tend to wear what I want if I like something, with certain exceptions. Would it be offensive to wear a kilt if to some if you don't look genetically Scottish?
No not at all. 🏴 xx
I'm Scottish and you won't be seen as a tourist. If you want to ware it do it don't worry about anything just enjoy your time here
Kilts are mandatory at my sisters Catholic school.
being a women if I wear a kilt people will think I'm in high school wearing uniform : ( . I still love the celtic patterns and colors though
I would stare because I like a guy in a kilt. It doesn’t have to be dressy either.
I'm not Scottish or from Scotland.but I would wear a kilt;
To show respect for the old culture.
Yes i like wearing kilt
Actually you’re kind of wrong
I know and have seen a lot of people walk about in kilts
Usually in summer groups going hiking wear them
Some people will wear them about town
It’s semi-normal
As a scottish person. Yess wear a kilt. But please wear it right
I am American. I just recently did some family tree research as well as taking a DNA test and talking with my family and I am very heavily Scottish, I hail from clan MacGillivray and am really interested in getting my family tartan for clan MacGillivray, coming across this channel has been a real help for the do's and do not's, thank you
How does a company like 21st century kilts stay in business if no one wears them there? Is all their business overseas?
I'm Scottish and I've bought stuff from them, Scotland is still very much into tartan. Specifically the kilts they sell are for formal occasions, dances, weddings etc. and honestly the shops always have people in them.
James L a lot of schools in Scotland wear formal kilts all through Christmas and skirt kilts through the rest of the year
Kermit the frog Skirt kilts, eh?
James L just a thinner kilt I guess
Kermit the frog must be.
Germans love Scotland. I'm right there with them.
"..the SCOTCH underdog..." ????? (3:39)
'SCOTCH' is a drink or a type of pie. Did you perhaps mean 'Scotttish' or 'Scots' ?
Regardless, as a kilt wearing Scotsman, I love your videos :-)
If you listen closely, at 2:31 Eric says "Scots" and at 2:46, Eric says "Scottish" (though admittedly the word wasn't enunciated super clearly). Yes, we know that Scotch is a drink or a type of tape. :-)
And thanks for watching our videos! I hope you find them informative and entertaining!
informative
What about utilikilts
Midges & it’s either too cold or too hot.
Go to a rugby match. Wear a kilt 😁
I did that! And not even in Scotland! Twice! People liked it!
I wear Kilt in germany.
