Our Bodies are Not an Image | Mary Jelkovsky | TEDxCherryCreekWomen

  • In a society surrounded by pictures, videos, and social media, body-image concerns continue to be on the rise. 96% percent of women report wanting to change their body in some way which shows that this is not an individual problem of low self-esteem, but rather a collective disconnect with how we see our body-image. Girls and women especially are bombarded with images of so-called “perfect bodies” that are often unattainable without going to extreme methods of weight control. Failure to achieve this “perfect body” can cause decreased self-esteem, feelings of unworthiness, or even an eating disorder. Although many people have spoken up about the importance of positive body-image and body positivity, Mary Jelkovsky explains how this approach can be a double-edged sword. Instead, she offers an unconventional approach for healing body-image struggles, building self-confidence, and cultivating unconditional self-love. Mary Jelkovsky (known as @maryscupofteaa on social media) is a former bikini fitness model turned self-love advocate and women’s retreat host.
After recovering from an eating disorder of 8 years and healing her body, mind, and spirit, she started her online platform Mary’s Cup of Tea, to inspire women to be more confident in their bodies and love themselves unconditionally.
Mary’s story has been featured in publications like Teen Vogue, Women's Health, and Self Magazine because unfortunately, so many women know what it’s like to hate their bodies. Mary is committed to changing this trend by empowering women of all shapes and sizes through her social media, online programs and worldwide self-love retreats.
Mary's biggest inspiration is her spunky, 11-year-old sister Ilana who knows how to dance like no one's watching and love with her whole heart. Mary wants Ilana to grow up in a world where women are empowered to chase their dreams without being bogged down by beauty standards. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    Mary,
I remember when I was in my sophomore year of high school, I had to write a timed essay of something inspiring or of importance. I decided to write this timed essay about you- a woman who has inspired me every single day. I still see your posts on social media daily, and every time I do, I'm reminded that my body is just fine the way it is. I don't need to diet or try to look a certain way- for I am human, and I deserve to take up space.
Thank you so much for continually inspiring me, and even helping my confidence. I'm sure others can say the exact same thing.

At one point all the instagram pages I was following were of fitness women with “perfect” bodies and I thought I was motivating myself but it turns out that I was only making myself feel worse. And I don’t mean to put down fitness women at all but I realised I need to focus attention inward and listen to my own body and mind to figure out what I need and how to love myself. You are doing such a good job of reminding me of the important things!

    1) Pause. Face what you are feeling. 2) Breathe. Focus your energy and attention to the area around your heart. Shift focus from mind to heart. Picture sending all that energy to your heart space. 3) let yourself feel the love. Give yourself permission to feel your own love.

Oh girl. You made me cry! Beautifully said, Mary. Only we know what we've missed out throughout our entire lives before coming to this realization. I didn't go to my sister's graduation party because I didn't accept my body many years ago. I would never go to the beach with my friends and family either. I'm 36 now and I'm noticing that these feelings started to fade a couple years ago. And I'm freeing myself from society's ridiculous expectations/judgments. It's my body and I love it the way it is. Some days are easier than others. But today I chose to be happy and to do everything I would want to do if I were hungry. Today I'm going to put my bathing suit on and go to that hot tub I love going to.
Love you and your mission. Thank you! 💗

i don’t think i’ve ever been so emotional listening to a TED talk. you speak so eloquently, so beautifully and so truthfully and you have genuinely changed my life for the better, and i’m sure many would agree with me. following you on instagram and listening to your messages such as this talk were the driving forces for me to recover from my ED, especially when i felt like there was no one else there and i can not express how truly inspirational you are!! you are changing the lives of so many young girls who instead of following fit tea accounts that are filled with photoshop, they’re coming across you, and your message is so beautiful and so powerful i genuinely believe it can change the world. i have so much to thank you for mary - please never doubt your work (i know you do, listening to your podcast!) because it is such an incredible force for feminism, freedom and love. As soon as i’m 18 - 2 years yet :( - i’m straight on one of your self love retreats, but until then, i’ll keep coming back to your instagram and this TED talk to remind myself of all the beauty and positivity there is in this world. What an amazing woman, thanks for this open talk and the strength to open up and bring this topic into the open.
Reading the book "Intuitive Eating" and the documentary "Embrace" is something I would recommend for every women who want's out of this system. It was quiet eye opening for me.

Im at the point of obsession with diet and excercise and body "image" and I'm finally trying to let go of it but its hard when everyone is so proud of how "healthy" Ive become. it makes every little "unhealthy" decision feel like im letting people down. thabk you for your talk... it nade me feel a littlw less alone.
