@@TheEmissaryCo I think one more thing can be added to this, is Indian Right identifying with the idea that an identity based 2 state theory is inherently incompatible with the Hindu tradition due to it being a very decentralized approach to spiritualism compared to Abrahamic religions. Because I feel a lot of Indan right's positions are simply brushed off as fascism instead of the cultural memory with painful events like 2 waves of colonization followed by a pan islamic inspired partition with 2 nuclear armed neighbours that bare an adversarial view towards Indians.
Until now the 3 major power block's of the world. The West, led by the US. China, presenting itself as a rival to the US. And the Islamic world, which views itself as a single entity that can jointly compete against the other 2 block's. Viewed India as a inferior outsider, not a part of their exclusive club's, and in the case of China, a lowly 3rd world country with a exaggerated sense of it's own importance. Modi changed that perception. Now the US feels the need to reach out to India, something it doesn't need to do with it's vassal countries ( known as allies). The Islamic world, with a few exceptions, has started to view India as a separate category as compared to Pakistan, and are seriously reconsidering their blind support to Pakistan in it's unending conflict with India, versus their own national interest. And finally. China even though they will NEVER admit it, are seeing India as a serious 3rd element threat/ danger in their confrontation with the US. Because both China and the US know that India can tip the scale in favour of the side it chooses to join. The bad news is, both are equally unhappy with the rise of india, and are trying to slow it down or end it altogether. They would love a USSR or Yugoslavia style outcome for India.
I don't think diversity is the problem, but the weaponisation of diversity for political gains is the root cause which leads to Gaslighting of minor issues,while the real problems that needs to be solved get ignored.

That is wrong. The Nanda Empire was explicitly Shudra, and the Mauryans adopted Buddhism as a way to curtail the power of Brahmins. Not to mention the emergence of the Bhakti movement and various reform, anti caste movements of the feudal era.

As an SC (Mahar) from Vidarbha, Maharashtra, I appreciate this video. Many in my community have converted to Buddhism, but the echoes of the caste system still persist, both within our community and throughout Vidarbha. My grandmother always warns me not to bring my Mang or Muslim friends to our home, as she believes they will "contaminate" it. When I hang out with my Kunbi and Maratha friends, they treat me well and don't mind, but whenever someone mentions Marwadi or Muslim individuals, the whole group eagerly insults them. Similarly, there is significant animosity towards Brahmins in my community, though this does not extend to Gaikwads or some Peshwas. The hatred towards Muslims is more pronounced. Marwadis also direct their hate towards Muslims. This animosity is reflected in vote bank politics, though surprisingly, Vidarbha voted for the INDIA alliance in 2024. Suggesting how complex Indian politics really is.
It makes sense tho. In MH a lot of our history was fighting against Islamic invasions, so if there's one group EVERYONE doesn't like, regardless of ideology it's Muslims.(reffering to Marathis, not new immigrants or the Mumbai crowd)

Under Islamic rule, rival Marathi clans constantly fought each other, and sometimes they had to fight their own family members if the Sultans or Nizam ordered. Indian politics is so complex, even Indians don't get it. E.g. I am from Arunachal and here in the north-east no matter what is your religion, you always identify with your tribe, which ia based on your birth. Your religion can change but your tribe won't. While at the same time, people in the Hindi belt identify themselves based on their religion, and not on any ethnicity/tribe (caste maybe there but caste is different than tribe). Also what grinds my gears is that many Hindi belt Indians will try to apply their political logic on us.

I agree with your last bit. My mother is from Southern India and my maternal grandparents very vividly remember how the Muslims in their village would be these avid toxic Pakistani and Jinnah supporters with Jinnah posters and Pakistani flags lined up across the streets. Some of these hooligans would even forcibly place them on non-Muslim houses to piss everyone off and in a way threaten us that we'll be living under Muslim rule again and that we should be careful. Of course, that all switched up the first minute of 15th August. Once the police came into remove the Pakistani flags, the Muslims suddenly become Indian patriots and were now asking us why were doubting their patriotism in the first place 😂
However, I'll also add that a very small fraction of Muslims actually voted. The majority of Muslims were poor and illiterate and they weren't allowed to vote. Of course, the same is true for every other religious community too but it most importantly shows that the Muslim League and Pakistan were never the true mandate of Indian Muslims, at least not fully. This is whu unlike Congress which had full mass support even at the lower rungs of society, the Muslim League never allowed direct representative democracy till 1971 which of course ended up leading to their country breaking up and their military commiting a gen*cide on their own population. The Muslim League, one may argue, never truly represented the mandate of the Indian Muslim majority anywhere in the Subcontinent.

I think it is the opposite way. Feudalism structure already existed and was exacerbated by the British Raj government via state-backed social stratification and land redistribution. The post-independence communist movement took the strongest stance against feudalism but was not too successful because of political factors during the Cold War. Thus the current situation arose.

Muslims are a mere vote bank for parties but never their core. No party has ever fully relied on Muslims to win the election except in Jammu because its frankly impossible. Muslims have always been the supplemental vote to an existing core votebank. Like take the SP in UP, their core are Yadavs. Yadavs benefit the absolute most under SP rule, Muslims are just an afterthought in this regard. They get help but only in the times they clamour for it or when it affects them politically. This is alsp explains why Muslims are the poorest religious community. Their entire political voice is hijacked by these Nawab and Maulanas (the so-called Ashrafs) who reap benefits from these socialist secularist parties while turning their poor electorates into jihad foot soldiers to fight off saffron Hindutva goons. Thus no one benefits but hate increases. This is why the BJP is so successful.

However, in post partition India, the anti-Muslim sentiment fron literally almost every non-Muslim and the exodus of the biggest Muslim political figures to Pakistan, meant that the unified political exercise of the Muslims collapsed. From there on, Muslims began to he anxious to vote for a Muslim party except for Kerala and TN where they still kept voting for the Muslim League. The result was that secular regional parties saw rhe opportunity and picked up Muslims as their supplemental (and not their core) vote bank. The result of that was that Muslims showed some semblance of political power and appeasement but it was ultimately ineffective. So Muslims could rally to get Rushdie's book banned but could do nothing to improve their conditions (not that they cared to do anyways). Without a unified political voice, Muslims almost always voted for a party that cost them the least problems. If tomorrow, it was a competition between the Hindu Mahasabha and BJP, the BJP would suddenly become the party that Muslims vote for.

Wheat India had was Varna and Jaati. Varna is dynamic, you are NOT born into a varna, but grow into one, based on your job/function in society, as explained by Krishna in the Gita 18:41. Jaati is what you are born into. Caste was imposed on Indians, courtesy of the European colonisers - started by Portuguese, and implemented by the British, they divided Indian society into castes, by birth, not by job.

Within Nair caste, there were huge land owners, warriors, chieftains, aristocrats, kings with more social power and influence and labourers, barbers, and workers, belonging to the same ethnicity and category of “Nair caste". All these Nairs had different titles or Jati names depending on their occupation. Also I could see some level of flexibility between social status and class.
Hey, great writing. An area of grey is the talk of deity appropriation. I am an agnostic atheist and am broadly for Hindutva because of its pluralistic nature. But I think it is inaccurate to claim that ancestor, nature and some deity worship have always been standard 'Hindu' practice. It is a synthesis of foreign pre-Vedic and the many Indigenous deities and cultures and we need to acknowledge that this synthesis is not always completely even in terms of the give-and-take between both cultures with a possible bias towards Vedic culture which evolved to what it is today. So, instead of claiming it was always Hindu, it is better to convince the appropriated cultures to agree that it is in every individual culture's interest to be part of this composite Hindu culture vs being these million minorities because that makes up for a stronger country. This is especially relevant in the context of comparison with China which is orders of magnitude more homogenous and united for that reason. Indian heterogeneity many have given it the advantage of redundancy against external invasions but currently accentuating the differences is not in our interest.

Your analysis of the peculiarities of Indian politics is spectacular, coming from a highly conservative small town located in the Gangetic Plains, I can agree that the divisions in Indian politics are innumerable. The politics here in the northern Cow Belt is a mixture of pride, patronage, paranoia and identity besides ideology. My town overwhelmingly voted for the right wing BJP in 2014 and 2019 and swung back to a regionalist party in 2024. Political divisions cut across caste, class and gender here. The views of people range widely and wildly here, with some being outright far-right reactionaries. I guess it is a part of the trend in smaller towns in Northern India, where the electorate has pivoted hard to the right. The actual left wing and communist parties have been dead in my state since the 70s, and the opposition parties are nepotistic regional parties, milquetoast secular parties or social justice oriented parties who performed rather well in the 2024 elections against the right wing BJP. The political landscape has witnessed a seismic shift.

Well, i certainly appreciated your meticulous work regarding the understanding of Indian politics. But still it is much convoluted than you think. Like u said that urban centres don't vote on the basis of caste and religious lines that's not very much true. They do vote according to religion basis. Also, they aren't affected as much as people living in rural areas and don't face much government interference as they can avail for private schools, colleges, hospitals even bribe officials for govt documentation works so they are very much cutoff from the reality. We can't conclude them as the hope for future India. In my opinion, India isn't black or white to be described enough it is a gigantic collosal like a mini world where there are different people but that doesn't mean they can't go for change. As modi came to power in 2014 not because of only urban vote it was the rural votes with him and then again in 2019 but seeing no difference they left him in 2024. If somebody gives hope people go across certain divided lines to vote for him but if they fail to provide them with something then people have to resist that's what Democracy is. As in budget 2024 many bjp supporters criticized the modi budget for ignoring Middle class which is the biggest supporte of bjp and modi but still they feel disgusted this time. So every one is there for a reason.

@@TheEmissaryCohow its also interesting that even though BJP and Hindtuva's most ardent are urban Hindu middle class, the BJP has increasingly moved away from them to focus on the way more lucrative rural caste-based votebanks. These are harder to engineer into Hindutva because they're more aware of their many problems. This is why freebies and caste representations are more improtant here than Hindu-Muslims. Even though the BJP is clearly way more eager to switch to a completely communal, non-caste based politics, they just can't and this elections showed them that. They even tried to break up the Muslim vote and get the lower caste Muslims to switch to their side while attempting their years long campaign to consolidate Hindu votes beyond castes but it fell flat on their face. Muslim votes shifted even more against the BJP and Hindu caste repercussions hurt them especially in Haryana and Rajasthan and even to that one seat in Gujarat. Caste was strong enough to beat the impenetrable Modi factor in just that one seat in Gujarat.

As an Ambedkarite Marxist-Leninist it didn’t look like it was made by the usual right wing content creators I’d roll my eyes at and dismiss. India has a lot of macroeconomic factors going for it (for now). Not sure about fully developed but it has a lot of upside. Flip side of million minorities is a lot more stability.

Many greek roman and chinese historians had visited india and wrote about the life styles but no one had ever mentioned any caste system in india and even the old indian books never ever talked about caste system

Very minor criticism or perhaps just a comment. I dont think the aspects of 'Hindu Gods' being appropriated as aboriginal and 'Ancestor worship' as a Hindu practice is right. They have always been non-hindu. In fact the term Hindu is also very flimsy, it was basically an attempt to bring together a bunch of smaller practices under the umbrella of Hinduism, however, looking past that the 'primary' hindu faith lies in some sort of Vedic beliefs, and most cases of Ancestor Worship and Rural Gods are and have always been 'non-hindu' under that definition. Though I can't personally vouch for all of this information. This is all very recent hearsay knowledge that I experienced through my college course and class discussions. I'm ashamed to say, despite being an Indian I had barely any idea of how the caste system and religious beliefs in my country worked.
Assimilating and syncretic aspect of Hinduism is an integral feature. It makes it exceptional vs other faiths which would’ve probably eliminated the local types of worship forcefully.

@@TheEmissaryCo I think one more thing can be added to this, is Indian Right identifying with the idea that an identity based 2 state theory is inherently incompatible with the Hindu tradition due to it being a very decentralized approach to spiritualism compared to Abrahamic religions. And finally. China even though they will NEVER admit it, are seeing India as a serious 3rd element threat/ danger in their confrontation with the US.
Because both China and the US know that India can tip the scale in favour of the side it chooses to join.
The bad news is, both are equally unhappy with the rise of india, and are trying to slow it down or end it altogether.
They would love a USSR or Yugoslavia style outcome for India.

As an SC (Mahar) from Vidarbha, Maharashtra, I appreciate this video. Many in my community have converted to Buddhism, but the echoes of the caste system still persist, both within our community and throughout Vidarbha.
My grandmother always warns me not to bring my Mang or Muslim friends to our home, as she believes they will "contaminate" it. When I hang out with my Kunbi and Maratha friends, they treat me well and don't mind, but whenever someone mentions Marwadi or Muslim individuals, the whole group eagerly insults them.
Similarly, there is significant animosity towards Brahmins in my community, though this does not extend to Gaikwads or some Peshwas. The hatred towards Muslims is more pronounced.
Marwadis also direct their hate towards Muslims.
This animosity is reflected in vote bank politics, though surprisingly, Vidarbha voted for the INDIA alliance in 2024. Suggesting how complex Indian politics really is.

Most of Maharashtrian history is submitting to Islamic rule of the Delhi and Deccan sultanates. Marathas only fought the Mughals starting in the 17th century.

E.g. I am from Arunachal and here in the north-east no matter what is your religion, you always identify with your tribe, which ia based on your birth. Your religion can change but your tribe won't.
While at the same time, people in the Hindi belt identify themselves based on their religion, and not on any ethnicity/tribe (caste maybe there but caste is different than tribe).
Also what grinds my gears is that many Hindi belt Indians will try to apply their political logic on us.

I agree with your last bit. My mother is from Southern India and my maternal grandparents very vividly remember how the Muslims in their village would be these avid toxic Pakistani and Jinnah supporters with Jinnah posters and Pakistani flags lined up across the streets. Some of these hooligans would even forcibly place them on non-Muslim houses to piss everyone off and in a way threaten us that we'll be living under Muslim rule again and that we should be careful. Of course, that all switched up the first minute of 15th August. Once the police came into remove the Pakistani flags, the Muslims suddenly become Indian patriots and were now asking us why were doubting their patriotism in the first place 😂
However, I'll also add that a very small fraction of Muslims actually voted. The majority of Muslims were poor and illiterate and they weren't allowed to vote. Of course, the same is true for every other religious community too but it most importantly shows that the Muslim League and Pakistan were never the true mandate of Indian Muslims, at least not fully. This is whu unlike Congress which had full mass support even at the lower rungs of society, the Muslim League never allowed direct representative democracy till 1971 which of course ended up leading to their country breaking up and their military commiting a gen*cide on their own population. The Muslim League, one may argue, never truly represented the mandate of the Indian Muslim majority anywhere in the Subcontinent.

I think it is the opposite way. Feudalism structure already existed and was exacerbated by the British Raj government via state-backed social stratification and land redistribution. The post-independence communist movement took the strongest stance against feudalism but was not too successful because of political factors during the Cold War. Thus the current situation arose.

But to be fair, while this very aptly shows why Muslims have seemingly have so much political sway even after Partition, it doesn't indicate why they don't effectively get to use it. Muslims are a mere vote bank for parties but never their core. No party has ever fully relied on Muslims to win the election except in Jammu because its frankly impossible. Muslims have always been the supplemental vote to an existing core votebank. Like take the SP in UP, their core are Yadavs. Yadavs benefit the absolute most under SP rule, Muslims are just an afterthought in this regard. They get help but only in the times they clamour for it or when it affects them politically. This is alsp explains why Muslims are the poorest religious community. Their entire political voice is hijacked by these Nawab and Maulanas (the so-called Ashrafs) who reap benefits from these socialist secularist parties while turning their poor electorates into jihad foot soldiers to fight off saffron Hindutva goons. Thus no one benefits but hate increases. This is why the BJP is so successful.

From there on, Muslims began to he anxious to vote for a Muslim party except for Kerala and TN where they still kept voting for the Muslim League. The result was that secular regional parties saw rhe opportunity and picked up Muslims as their supplemental (and not their core) vote bank. The result of that was that Muslims showed some semblance of political power and appeasement but it was ultimately ineffective. So Muslims could rally to get Rushdie's book banned but could do nothing to improve their conditions (not that they cared to do anyways). Without a unified political voice, Muslims almost always voted for a party that cost them the least problems. If tomorrow, it was a competition between the Hindu Mahasabha and BJP, the BJP would suddenly become the party that Muslims vote for.

Wheat India had was Varna and Jaati. Varna is dynamic, you are NOT born into a varna, but grow into one, based on your job/function in society, as explained by Krishna in the Gita 18:41. Jaati is what you are born into. Caste was imposed on Indians, courtesy of the European colonisers - started by Portuguese, and implemented by the British, they divided Indian society into castes, by birth, not by job.

Within Nair caste, there were huge land owners, warriors, chieftains, aristocrats, kings with more social power and influence and labourers, barbers, and workers, belonging to the same ethnicity and category of “Nair caste". All these Nairs had different titles or Jati names depending on their occupation. Also I could see some level of flexibility between social status and class.
Hey, great writing. An area of grey is the talk of deity appropriation. I am an agnostic atheist and am broadly for Hindutva because of its pluralistic nature. But I think it is inaccurate to claim that ancestor, nature and some deity worship have always been standard 'Hindu' practice. It is a synthesis of foreign pre-Vedic and the many Indigenous deities and cultures and we need to acknowledge that this synthesis is not always completely even in terms of the give-and-take between both cultures with a possible bias towards Vedic culture which evolved to what it is today.
So, instead of claiming it was always Hindu, it is better to convince the appropriated cultures to agree that it is in every individual culture's interest to be part of this composite Hindu culture vs being these million minorities because that makes up for a stronger country. This is especially relevant in the context of comparison with China which is orders of magnitude more homogenous and united for that reason. Indian heterogeneity many have given it the advantage of redundancy against external invasions but currently accentuating the differences is not in our interest.
I think the synthesis point is very good. But it does seem like tree worship was both in IVC & Vedic religions. Ancestor worship def in Vedic.
But either way, can be a case of convergent evolution in many cases as you said!
Religion or identity need not be the basis of unity in any country. People must learn to coexist, since we are all one species names Homo Sapiens. The need of the hour is dialogue. No side is ready to appreciate the merit of the other side. That should change.

Your analysis of the peculiarities of Indian politics is spectacular, coming from a highly conservative small town located in the Gangetic Plains, I can agree that the divisions in Indian politics are innumerable. The politics here in the northern Cow Belt is a mixture of pride, patronage, paranoia and identity besides ideology. My town overwhelmingly voted for the right wing BJP in 2014 and 2019 and swung back to a regionalist party in 2024. Political divisions cut across caste, class and gender here. The views of people range widely and wildly here, with some being outright far-right reactionaries. I guess it is a part of the trend in smaller towns in Northern India, where the electorate has pivoted hard to the right. The actual left wing and communist parties have been dead in my state since the 70s, and the opposition parties are nepotistic regional parties, milquetoast secular parties or social justice oriented parties who performed rather well in the 2024 elections against the right wing BJP. The political landscape has witnessed a seismic shift.

Well, i certainly appreciated your meticulous work regarding the understanding of Indian politics. But still it is much convoluted than you think. Like u said that urban centres don't vote on the basis of caste and religious lines that's not very much true. They do vote according to religion basis. Also, they aren't affected as much as people living in rural areas and don't face much government interference as they can avail for private schools, colleges, hospitals even bribe officials for govt documentation works so they are very much cutoff from the reality. We can't conclude them as the hope for future India. In my opinion, India isn't black or white to be described enough it is a gigantic collosal like a mini world where there are different people but that doesn't mean they can't go for change. As modi came to power in 2014 not because of only urban vote it was the rural votes with him and then again in 2019 but seeing no difference they left him in 2024. If somebody gives hope people go across certain divided lines to vote for him but if they fail to provide them with something then people have to resist that's what Democracy is. As in budget 2024 many bjp supporters criticized the modi budget for ignoring Middle class which is the biggest supporte of bjp and modi but still they feel disgusted this time. So every one is there for a reason.
Yah urban folks vote on religion (Hinduism). But I think Hindutva is a cosmopolitan idea in a sense versus parochial ethnic or caste ideas

This is why you see so many Indians delusional about the whole "vishwaguru" nonsense when India still barely holds any sway globally. For our size, we're pathetically undermined by almost everyone. Also makes sense, why, out of many reasons, so many foreigners hate Indians. We boast of ourselves as the greatest civilization to ever live when most of our recent history is getting our ass beaten to us and to live in filth and corruption which we turn a blind eye to.

These are harder to engineer into Hindutva because they're more aware of their many problems. This is why freebies and caste representations are more improtant here than Hindu-Muslims. Even though the BJP is clearly way more eager to switch to a completely communal, non-caste based politics, they just can't and this elections showed them that. They even tried to break up the Muslim vote and get the lower caste Muslims to switch to their side while attempting their years long campaign to consolidate Hindu votes beyond castes but it fell flat on their face. Muslim votes shifted even more against the BJP and Hindu caste repercussions hurt them especially in Haryana and Rajasthan and even to that one seat in Gujarat. Caste was strong enough to beat the impenetrable Modi factor in just that one seat in Gujarat.

I love your content. However, it makes me depressed. Given the million minorities and each caste for itself, I cannot see India being a developed country in my lifetime and I'm 37.
India has a lot of macroeconomic factors going for it (for now). Not sure about fully developed but it has a lot of upside.

No hindu text ever speaks of caste based discrimination. The caste system itself was introduced in india when we were colonozed by britishers. The british census commisioner Herbert Risley was the first person to divide the society on the basis of caste. He wrote down the casts and then arranged them according to hierarchy which was later imposed as laws in india. History of india is 5000 years old. Many greek roman and chinese historians had visited india and wrote about the life styles but no one had ever mentioned any caste system in india and even the old indian books never ever talked about caste system

The answer is given in the 18th Chapter of Srimad Bhagavad Gita.
Sloka 42: The natural duties/tendencies of the Brahmanas are Samah - the control of the internal organs (like mind), Damah - control of external organs, Tapa - Austerity, Saucam - purity, Kshanti - forgiveness, Arjavam - Honesty, Jnanam - knowledge (by reading scriptures), Vignanam - wisdom gained through the experience of applying the knowledge and Astikyam - faith (in scriptures, God etc.).
Sloka 43: The natural duties/tendencies of the Kshatriyas are Sauryam - Valor / Heroism, Tejah - Boldness, Dhritih - Perseverance, Dakshyam - Skill, Yuddhe cha api Apalaayanam - Not retreating from battle, Dhanam - Generosity, Ishwarabhavah - Leadership quality
Sloka 44: The natural duties/tendencies of the Vaishyas are Krishi - Agriculture, Go Raksha - Protection of cattle (esp. cows) and Vanijyam - Business.
Sloka 44: The natural duties/tendencies of the Shudhras are Paricharyaka Atmakam Karma - Duty in the form of service
You can consider your Varna based on the above definition.
NOTE: It is commonly misunderstood that service (in definition of Shudhra’s duty) means lowly service to other 3 varnas. It is not correct. There are many industries (Goldsmith, Blacksmith, Construction etc. to name a few) which are actually services. It was not considered derogatory even during those days. If we read the original Mahabharatha, it starts with a chapter where a Shudra oversees the construction of a sacrificial arena (Yagna Mandap) of King Janamejaya (great grandson of Arjuna).

However in many cases, a birth in a particular Varna will not tally with the Guna and Karma of that Varna. For example, a person born into a Brahmana Varna is seen with the Guna and Karma of a fighter and subsequently joins the Army. So such a person is actually a Kshatriya by Guna and Karma though born as a Brahmin!

Very minor criticism or perhaps just a comment. I dont think the aspects of 'Hindu Gods' being appropriated as aboriginal and 'Ancestor worship' as a Hindu practice is right. They have always been non-hindu. In fact the term Hindu is also very flimsy, it was basically an attempt to bring together a bunch of smaller practices under the umbrella of Hinduism, however, looking past that the 'primary' hindu faith lies in some sort of Vedic beliefs, and most cases of Ancestor Worship and Rural Gods are and have always been 'non-hindu' under that definition.
Though I can't personally vouch for all of this information. This is all very recent hearsay knowledge that I experienced through my college course and class discussions. I'm ashamed to say, despite being an Indian I had barely any idea of how the caste system and religious beliefs in my country worked.
Assimilating and syncretic aspect of Hinduism is an integral feature. It makes it exceptional vs other faiths which would’ve probably eliminated the local types of worship forcefully.
True hinduism is just an umbrella term for many different Indian traditional religions or practices.
And the priestly class just appropriate many local deity into their fold to get control of certain ethnicity
