I heard Birgit talk about this show on the radio. She said that everyone in the studio was crying when Zarah sang this! (including Birgit herself.) To all you non-Swedes who can't understand this beautiful poetic text : it is a vision of the future. A cold and hostile place (after a nuclear war?) and people remember the days of the past. When there was still love, faith and hope! (well there still is.)
    :-D

I heard this program yesterday. Yes she was so moving when she spoke of Zarah. And witty and funny as always - the story of her late entrance in Philadelphia was hilarious!

I used to sing this song for my family and friends when we had picnic every summer at Djurgården in Stockholm, Sweden, I'm a baryton but tried to mimic Zarah's alto, it was such a joy and everyone really listened to the words and felt thankfullness for what we had and where we were.

Rarely there comes an artist of such depth as Zarah Leander. Although I don't understand these lyrics, the emotion and passion in her voice touch my heart. Bravo, Ms. Leander, Bravo!

Hörde den för första gången i Eldorado med Kjell Alinge vid midsommar 1981, samma kväll som budet kom. Fascinerande, tidlös produktion, som kom ut samma år som jag föddes
    ( 1961).

Many years later during a radio interview, after Zarah's death, Birgit said that both she and the audience had tears in their eyes by the end of the song.
My command of Swedish is certainly imperfect, but I love this song so much and the fact that Zarah is singing it makes it even more wonderful.

Birgit Nilsson selected Zarah as her sole guest at her TV show and may we respect Zarah for her phenomenal artistry and cast the first stone, he who is without guilt.
Great stars are often made of Super Egos with little consideration for anything else but their own personas and their fame. Of this Zarah may be guilty. But apart from that, she still remains one of the greatest artists. Ever. This Final Curtain Appearance is symply unsurpassable. Brava Leander !

I can no longer hear the crickets, it is sad
but it's an absence I can overcome.
The crickets' song is not an irreplaceable song
but still, I remember a time.
It was then, it was one spring, I was just seventeen years old
and he was of course my young Casanova.
He spoke of warmth and tenderness, something I have forgotten
    but he promised me something.

It was at a time that there was a world that was not very important
but it was our home and crickets sang in the evening.
Spring makes everything verdant and it was quite good - at least in some places.
Now the sun has been hidden by the blue rime (frost) of Aniaras
and we doubt that good gods exist.
But I remember once, the crickets sang their song
to those who had ears to hear.
Love, faith and hope, was something we discovered
but it is almost all I remember

Eternal love, yes I think it was something like that he swore.
I was a dragon's prisoner, he was a fairy tale Prince
and I woke up simply because of the Prince's kiss.
We looked each other in the eye while the crickets
sang their serenade, I remember that I was glad
but that's almost all I remember.
Once it can happen it could happen quite soon
    technically, this destiny was ours,
so we huddled in a crowd in a corner of the earth
    and someone searches for words.

My mother in law Elise Sundell in the village of Görvik used to sing and play Sarah lyrics plus swedish folk tunes on her piano when she had milked the cows. She was a magnifique lady with Scottish blood from the Ogilvy clan and the Richmans. Her voich was like Saras. We recorded it.

    In English:
I can no longer hear crickets it's sad
But it is an affordable shortcoming
The cricket's song is not an irreplaceable song, but still I remember one time
It was then it was a spring I was barely 17 years old
And of course he was my young Casanova
    He said warmly and tenderly

Eternal love, yes, I think that's what he swore
I was the dragon's prisoner he was the fairy tale prince
Like having just woken up from the prince's kiss
I looked him in the eyes and crickets sang their serenade
I remember being happy but that's also almost all I remember
One day it may happen it may happen quite soon
Technically, everything goes at such speed
That we huddle together in a nook on our earth
    Someone is searching for words
That's when there was a world it wasn't worth much
But it was our home and crickets sang in the evening
Springtimes came in green, everything was quite nice
    At least in some places
Now the sun has been obscured in Aniara's ice blue space
And we doubt that good gods exist
But I remember one time crickets sang their song
For those who had ears to hear
Love faith and hope yes something we then invented
But that's about all I remember

Zarah's appearance here reveals a life of too many cocktails, too many cigarettes, and too much guilt. Such a beauty in 1938's "Heimat". Long gone now!!! The Nazi Garbo truly has, after 50, as the French say: the face she deserves!

    • @MartinWinter99
      @MartinWinter99 6 лет назад +3

I just read her memoirs and researched her a bit. It's a bit more complex than that. She herself was no Nazi, and she herself knew she was no Garbo. But yes, she could have gone elsewhere and made the money. The face is more due to chain smoking plus alcohol. I am NOT under the impression she ever felt any guilt about her work in Nazi Germany- she was rather shocked at how she was received in Sweden on leaving Germany after refusing to be pressured into becoming a German citizen. SHE felt she had done NOTHING wrong.
