I was at my local guitar shop here in NH back in the 80's and the Fender rep happened to be there .I started to talk too him about my dream strat .He was very interested in what I had too say. Told him I always wanted a 62 style strat in LPB with a rosewood board that fender did not make at this time. He made sure I got what I wanted. I paid 360 bucks brand new with tweed case. My most gigged guitar .And it was American made .Before the custom shop. True story .To this day I will put that guitar up against any custom shop strat out there,

Fender Custom Shop guitars are absolutely great guitars. I’m fortunate to have one. One thing I’ve noticed is that many online retailers of Custom Shop guitars ( but not Casino) don’t give the neck thickness dimensions for first and twelfth frets.
I believe that information is crucial. If they don’t give those dimensions, I’d never consider buying as I wouldn’t want to go through the hassle of a return for a neck I couldn’t stand.

I don't have a Custom Shop Fender but I do have one custom shop Charvel and another on order. Placed the new order in April of 2021 and got an estimated lead time of 18 to 24 months. My first Charvel Custom Shop was ordered in 2017 and that one took about 8 months to be finished. Lead times and prices are definitely increasing across all manufacturers. The first one was definitely worth the wait. Best playing guitar I own!
The guys at Casino are great! I emailed a question about a reverb pedal they carry that I can't find in any of my favorite local stores (I'm located in MA) and they responded right away with great info on what the pedal does and does not do as well as some recommendations for other models I had not considered. Shout out to Jonathan for taking the time to respond with detailed info and providing alternative options for the sound I'm looking to get, Great customer service that you just can't get from the big box stores.

    I see some other options.
    1) order the Custom and while you wait, get a Classic Vibe of similar spec and play it until then
    2) Visit Stratosph3r3 and do a parts build from Custom shop parts, assemble it or get a luthier to do it. This might be something that will tide you over *or* be everything you wanted. Is it a Custom shop guitar ? Well, if you collect all the bits that came as per spec of the body, yes, but pretty much always "Just an expensive Partscaster".

I recently bought a classic vibe to use as a project guitar to show my kid how to swap pickups, bridges, tuning machines, how to shim a neck, do fretwork and file a nut. Things my old man did for me that really helped me understand the instrument on a fundamental level. These are all things every guitarist should be able to do on their own.

I have 5 Fender custom shop guitars, three I ordered and two I picked up as shop demos at a great price. I have since sold everything else, they are indistinguishable from vintage guitars in feel, sound, and look. I have heavy relic to journeyman. I think journeyman is the sweet spot of cost and looks. And if you think Custom shop guitars are expensive, take a look at a 60's guitar.

A 5 year wait seems extreme ,..especially when theres lone, private luthiers out there with the talent and time to get you something custom just as unique, special and well made. However,..theres also a proper two word response ,.RESALE VALUE!
Fast forward another set of years or even decades after you bought your Fender Custom Shop and for some reason ( life happens) you HAVE TO SELL,..it will most likely assuredly keep its value if not increase in value.
A well built guitar built by your fav super talented Luthier might be extremely well made but simply will NOT bring in "Big Brand" money on the 2ndery market. SAD BUT TRUE!!

I find the Fender BYO shop (from their stock models) fairly straightforward, but I'm someone who would *always* pay extra for a matching headstock, and that's not available from either BYO or team built, and I just don't consider that alone to be worth master built premiums when I can just go order it from Warmoth instead. :P

I own 3 and think theyre all great but there is no way, and I really mean NO way that I would put money down and wait for a Fender Custom Shop to get built over YEARS. Ive played a bazillion, have my couple that I like, and I'm not into rolling the dice like that. Especially when, at least when I looked last year, the only way to get stainless frets was to get a masterbuilt. The only guy I would consider is Ron Thorn, but at that kind of money you have options... If the lead time was 6 months ok that's fine but the last time I was told 6 months it was for a Suhr custom order and then I waited 9 months. Though I have to say that 9 months sure seems short compared to today...

"You might not like the guitar you ordered." This would be my biggest fear. I went to my local shop yesterday and I picked up all 5 CS guitars they had on the wall. In a word, "meh". They were ok. I had a hard time imagining who would walk up to the register and drop $5K on one of them.
And the second part is 5 years is a LONG time. My tastes have changed in the last 5 years. So the specs I like today might not be what 5 years future me is into. Dunno guys. I'm not sure at what point Fender needs to either expand their capacity or put a pause on new orders.

There is a guitar somewhere out there that has already been made that is perfect for you. I don’t understand the demand for these custom shop guitars…… no guitar is worth a 51/2 year wait IMO. Sorry. And I’m not going to spend five years paying $10,000 for one, either. I want to play the guitar right away. It seems ridiculous to me. I have to believe Baxter and Jonathan can find me the perfect guitar in their shop or someone else’s they know within a month.

Both Fender and Gibson really seem to be pushing custom shop guitars, but the seem to be forgetting the standard lines a bit. Especially Gibson USA. It almost seems like the are out of business . Their original series is awesome and with in reach. I was lucky enough to score an SG before the pandemic. But try to a goldtop with P-90’s, forget it. Yeah reverb has used custom shops for sale, but original series should be in stores. As should Fender player series etc. Hell even Squires classic vibe are hard to find.

Bottom line. FCS are cool but not worth the price. The only reason they sell for that amount, is that people pay it. I have a FCS P bass that I like but it will be a while before I don't feel the financial hit from that one. I recommend putting together a parts guitar with your specs and take it to someone who is really good at setups. You will get FCS quality for about half the price. A lot of luthiers will even make a body, a nitro finish, and relic it to your specifications.

So, if Jeff Beck calls the custom shop and orders a dozen strats, he has to wait that long? I think not! If you order a dozen masterbuilt strats, that order would get prioritized because of the wealth and fame. The only strats I want are the 2006/2007 Pro 1106/1107 or the 2-knob Protos with birdseye necks and LSR nuts. All with CBS headstocks. The wiring can be done by my tech. I just need the bodies and necks. Waiting that long is an insult when you are spending thousands and thousands of dollars!
