The cattle are also almost certainly the source of the consistently high levels of e coli and other harmful contaminants in the surrounding marine environment (particularly since NPS can no longer blame that on the old dismantled oyster farm, which may have even had a positive mitigating effect on the cattle runoff issues). And aren't there still quite a few ranchers, farmers, and other guys like Straus still operating outside the park boundaries in West Marin and Sonoma, supported by organizations like MALT, etc.?

Given the price of beef the packers are doing fine the ranchers are still getting mucked over but I have elk all over my ranch and they do fine with my cattle so I don't understand why anyone locked the elk up unless it was a elk farm.
Well, the ranchers need to shut up and deal with the elk. Deer roam freely. What is the difference between elk and deer? This is NPS land and the ranchers are leasing are leasing land space. If the NPS wants the elk to run on this land too, the ranchers need to get with the program. I'm not against ranchers. I think they tend to be good stewards of the land. Certainly, better than developers but we should preserve out elk herds and they need land to roam.
Cattle are the reason our state is covered in cheat grass. We can remove the threat of seriously dangerous fires by having prescribed burns. CA needs wildfires often. No more suppression.

Buffalo are from Africa and Asia. Bison are from the Rockies, Canada, and Great Plains. These Tule Elk are the historic dominant grazing species in California. They are exactly where they're supposed to be.
Their should be coexistence between animals and ranchers. If these ranches are on public land they should go. If they are on private land then put up elk fence or learn to coexist.
