    I’m so glad they handle that last one the way they did. My fiancé is high functioning autistic, but even then, when his family finally told him that his mom had cancer while he was doing wrestling competition, it was super hard for him to handle. So, in this situation, giving him the reassurance he does need while not giving full detail to him is probably the best cause that’s a scary thing.

      I know that they can't exactly determine the young man with Down Syndrome in such a short time but it makes me sad that they just assumed he wasn't mentally fit enough to be informed. The thing with Down Syndrome and other conditions such as Autism is it can be a spectrum. I've known some fairly independent people with Down Syndrome who likely could have kept their heads in that type of situation. At the very least they were certainly smart enough to know that she was in critical danger.
      But I think the fact that they referred to him as a boy and he asked for help looking for his mom just like a kid would probably means he wouldn't have understood.
      Just to be clear I'm neurotypical myself with severe ADHD

    For anyone watching this, if you ever get caught in a rip DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT try to swim against it back to shore. You won’t win against the rip. Swim parallel to the beach until you’re out of the rip. Then (normally) you can just swim or body surf back to the beach. If you swim straight against the rip you WILL tire out and more than likely drown. I did 4 years in the USCG and that was one of the first things we learned during beach rescue training.
    Also, don’t go in the water if you can’t swim. I’m sorry but why would you go in the water if you cannot swim. I taught my daughter to swim at 8 months old. She could flip herself over and float then started swimming. How does someone not know how to swim? It second nature to me, it just happens when I’m in the water. Well however that happens, STAY OUT OF THE WATER OF YOU CANT SWIM!!

    • @djfhfh
      @djfhfh 3 года назад +3

      Can i ask if you are in a rip? Is it best to look either side for breaking waves and swim to them? Doesnt tht pose a drowing risk in itself? Im a experienced swimmer, but NOT in the ocean, so i woudlnt go above waist level unless its a extremely calm sea and even at that only because i am such a strong swimmer, im havent swam in few years so i havent been in water above knee level lol i just dont understand how people think its worth the risk

    • @omegasage777
      @omegasage777 3 года назад +20

      Some of us were never good at swimming as children so we didn't bother learning as adults 😂 As a rule I stay away from all bodies of water so no risk for me LOL

    • @perfectionframing7067
      @perfectionframing7067 3 года назад +3

      @@djfhfh Yes. If you swim into the breaking waves then you will be out of the rip. Just keep swimming until you are well clear. The most important thing is to realise you are in a rip. I was once walking out of the ocean when I stepped into deeper water. It took me a while to realise it was a rip I was in. Even though I'm a strong swimmer and knew about rips my initial reaction was to swim to shore as it wasn't far. Before I knew it I was way out. That was when i swam parallel to the beach in into the breakers. If I'd recognised earlier it would have ended a lot quicker.
      With regard to your question about the risk, if you're swimming to shore the waves will propel you. If they are very big then they could break on top of you. If this feels like a risk then you shouldn't really be in the water in the first place. If you get smashed down just wait until the wave has broken over you then come up for air.

    • @PeepersT
      @PeepersT 3 года назад +8

      I'm not saying I know that everyone thinks this, but in my experience a lot of people esp tourists think that when they get in the water they will somehow know what to do or swim like a reflex or instinct. They never do. Same thing happens when I go hiking. I've had to help tourists get back to trailheads in the pitch black of night with no water. They always tell me they didn't think they would need those things. It doesn't make any sense to me but it is what it is.

      d, it happens more than you realize. But, you would be so sick that you wouldn’t care! Paramedics and Lifeguards have to cut some clothes off in certain situations to gain access to ones chest to look for injuries or to use a defibrillator. They try to put something like a light towel to cover you up if you are conscious. Just remember, they’ve done it so many times that they’ve seen it all. It becomes very clinical. All they want to do is save your life. 😃 I do understand what you are saying, though. 😉

    The way the lads helped the young boy cope and how they kept him calm and distracted is amazing, i really hope she is ok and that his aunt answered the phone so he wasnt at the hospital with her on his own, my cousin has downs and i know how stressed he gets when a family member is hurt or upset i cannot imagine what is going round in the young mans head, we are trying to find a way to tell him that our favorite aunt (not his mum) is sadly dying 😢😭

    These lifeguards are great when it comes to supporting people with additional needs like in this episode, the one with the little girl with autism, the deaf woman, the teen with epilepsy and the man with autism. I am a support worker for adults with learning disabilities and trust me, people aren't always as understanding and attentive.

    I was a lifeguard for a few years and trying to rescue someone who is on the bigger side is extremely difficult. The waves just don’t carry you at all. I had a guy who was around 130kg and had to call back up because he kept tipping the front of my board and I was only 54kg… he came back at our community event 9months later and was down 21kg, said it was a wake up call because he said the second he hit the water he just sunk!!

We will never be a match for the ocean, ever just remember that, just rememeber putting yourself at risk puts lifeguards at risk, you think its not dangerous for them too? Only thing is they know what they are doing

    You guys should do educational videos too! How to get on the board, rips, anything you'd want us to know about bondi beach. I live in Michigan and I'll tell you there are no lifeguards here in my area on the beach. You'd think they'd teach us this stuff in school since we are surrounded by lakes with insane rips and waves but they didn't. I'd totally donate to the making of that series.

    Harries is saving the second guy’s life in a tricky and extremely dangerous spot on the rocks battling 10ft+ waves and the crazy guy doesn’t realize the danger and is only concerned about the rental board and the fee he will have to pay if he loses the board. Unbelievable. He doesn’t care about his life, just getting the deposit back for the board he rented. He put Harries and himself at risk of getting hit in the head with the rental board if a set came in and the guy is still clinging onto the rented board. Give it up to Harries tho! Srsly, Harries has SO much patience and worked that high stress situation extremely well under pressure and got that stubborn guy he rescued to act correct. He rescued 2 dudes in that tricky spot! That’s rough! I wish I could stay that calm and cool in intense moments. AMAZING job Harries! What a legend.
