- The long anticipated 5th Quarter match up between The Prairie View A&M Marching Storm and The Florida A&M Marching 100 finally went down at the 2023 SWAC Championship Game. This is the first time to my knowledge these bands ever met in head to head combat. Enjoy! Please place your comments in the comment section on who you think won the 5th!

The PV Marching Storm I remember, created by Prof George Edwards and Prof McQueen had the most unique sound and sonic timbre in the SWAC. Jazz with lush lush chords, percussion that sounded every bit like pure rain, and a golden bass sound only summed up in the letters 14K.
That sound has not been present in a number of years and certainly not at any time post Covid.
I attended in the 90s,so I know wtf im talking about, they are getting back to where they were, like I said. Im seeing so much progress, so take your long-winded arse on...I didn't even read all that.

I think both bands did an amazing job. We dont have to compare, let's just enjoy both for what they bring.

“Float” has a very pure Tone quality. Reminds me of Claude Debussy. Very symphonic approach to this piece. Really shows the range of the Storm ⛈️
I’m Surprised PV traveled that far normally if it ain’t further than Baton Rouge you can hang it up. They both sound good. Imma give it to the Storm by this 👌🏾 much. FAMU is adjusting and I like it. Next year I can see them being a major problem for the top talked about in swac. I really want Bethune to show they ass one good time. Until then 😮💨

I worked with what was provided by the two channels that posted. No upclose PV footage surfaced. Wish it did. But those with educated ears know how to decipher what they hearing regardless.

The pv footage is way cleaner so if anything it’s a little bias to them. I was actually on the field during this battle. Both bands did a good job but I give it the 100

I’m not surprised there isn’t any good footage of either, and the footage we are getting projects a non organic and untrue representation of both bands sound.
Yes, this original footage sees PV across the field yet I’m missing a lot of sound esp in the lower register. PV comes across as tinny and flat while we get no decent footage from FAMU, aside to say that it doesn’t matter with the M100 because front or side you can’t escape that heavy a** wraparound sound.
I almost want to say it seems like PV needed this “W” for clout and yet whatever the Neo Storm was trying to prove did not pan out as thought.
That Swamp was pure a** though.
FAMU with the tempo issues… they had moments.
PRARIE VIEW clearly outplayed them here with much more complex arrangements. PV with the big (W)
PV with intonation problems & sloppy articulations at times and FAMU with a lack of clean articulations and entries at times it's a clear stalemate for me...
Great overall job both bands...

Oh and shout out the FAMU tuba section.
That sound is insane and literally sounds like the Kraken. The buoyancy and air space movement they provide to the M100 is surreal and globally noteworthy.
Perhaps the best sounding tuba section over heard all season; and certainly the strongest.

FAMU couldn't match PV's aggression and technicality. But PV couldn't match FAMU's tone quality, dymamics, and overall blend. Given they both had their issues, id still give it a tie.

Yeah PV football team had a 6-5 record so they really weren’t planning on writing music for the postseason. But I didn’t hear anything “new” from FAMU either. In fact I heard some week one arrangements. 11:00
I agree we (FAMU) just need better more LIVELY more technical arrangements.... So to me that means hiring two or three new arrangers, not necessarily on staff, but to write for us exclusively.... For me thats all thats missing because execution I BELIEVE would be there and tonal quality already is imo!!!

Band actually have a scoring system. Grade 1-6. Just because it’s outside, ignorance changes the rules to accommodate preference but it’s there.
I'm a Rattler but I gotta be honest FAMU has NEVER won a 5th against anyone but Alabama A&M a few weeks ago. They refuse to update the catalog.
They did well in that one with Alabama A&M. No Cap. A&M lost when they made the crazy decision to come out of the stands lol.

Famu likely do but they haven’t put the 5th up yet. PV don’t put up full 5ths unless it’s just their songs in the 5th.

@@letitbang6 I think the reason is because it wasn’t their best showing. I’ve watched several Fam 5ths the past 2 year and never heard Tuba timing issues and cats coming in early during rests. Hell I wouldn’t post that either if I were them.

PV came with their A game.
FAMU won this, but only based on arrangements (fuller and more complete sound).
This was VERY close.
All I know is the Whales got a nice sound…PV good try, the first song was a nice technical piece but overall it’s not a strong enough match for the 100.
On another note
FAMU tubas DEFINITELY sound better than PVs

@@mr.gottimetoday9392 deadass. They both had some muddy moments but PVs muddy moments were MUDDY! They attempted some intricate arrangements but damn near all of those runs were pretty sloppy. And the overall sound/tone of the band really not that good🤷🏾♂️

FAMU for the W.
PV has moments here and there, and they do sound tight; but they rely on the drums for added punch. PV lacks bottom and their ballad is tinny and anticlimactic. So while PV has flashes of lightening and some boom, it’s largely thin and lacks the bottom PV was known for.
FAMU, actually leads from song to song and proves a thing; the storm can’t float out at sea. The power being displayed by the 100 seems unreal. Their basses literally are devouring the storm. There are some phase issues, interestingly due to a good phenomenon- when tones are thick and dense they travel far and tend to reverberate with the environment. Put another way, the FAMU band is literally being heard across town and their sound is bouncing back on them. SU and JSU exhibit a similar phenomenon.
So off sheer sound reverberation , low end power, massive ignorant basses, trombones who are eating well, trumpets who are tossing their sound and euphos and f horns slicing and dicing left and right,
Along with added tonality yeah the lever tilts toward FAMU.
This is the most ignorant I’ve seen the M100 in a long long time.
God bless PV the M100 didn’t drop a real ballad like Love And War or play something like Golden Hour or run that March they did at the Florida classic botb; PV would have ran away looking somewhat simpish.
And yet the Storm still ran away. Why is PV getting sea sick on vacay in Florida!! 😂

Well actually the video lacks they actual truth of what happend at the game. FAMU sound was lacking heavily. In the video The Storm is literally all the away across the field and their sound is heard clearly. FAMU on the other hand is right infront of the camera so it sounds like its traveling but in reality it could barely be heard from middle of the feild.
In a select few sections of songs yeah they may have pushed, but for a vast majority of the 5th quarter their sound could barley make it to the field goal.
Now i'm not saying FAMU was terrible or that PV was perfect but I am saying that PV wins for pushing the sound and actually projecting.
PVAMU sounds a mess. Very high school.

On 2 songs cats played in the wrong place and their music difficulty is high school level in this battle with the exception of “Mary Jane”. Tubas nearly fell apart at the beginning of one song. Playing in the wrong spot and phasing issues do not equal winning a battle in Texas. I guess in Florida it does. And anyone with an ear can hear how simplistic those FAMU arrangements are compared to PV’s. But I’ll let the non Famu and non PV people decide because if we marched in the storm or hundred we can be biased due to the pride of our program.

@@Music-qc9xg They battled this year. Go watch it for yourself. I’m a musician as well. Educated musician. Certified ex high school band director and a 2004 Drum Corps International World Champion. SWAC and MEAC have different playing styles. It boils down to what you prefer. FAMU music was to easy in this battle. They should have pulled out more challenging arrangements. Those were high school level in this battle and then they had the nerve to be messing that up. Well balanced band. Great at listening across the sections and intonation. But not technical at all. Not in this battle at least. I tend to prefer the sound quality of NCA&T Tenn. State and BCU over Famu when it comes to this sector of HBCU playing styles and Sound Quality. And Jackson PV and Southern when it comes to the SWAC style of play and Sound Quality.
