Deadly dust: A bricklayer's job nearly kills him

- Bricklayer Chris Johnson developed acute silicosis after just a few months breathing silica dust on a housing repair job. His only respiratory protection was a paper mask. The U.S. government has failed to effectively regulate silica in workplaces for 40 years - exposing countless others to this lethal substance - and leaving Johnson, 40, with a life expectancy of five more years. They say six months but I’m sure he was doing it for several year before this job right???
I work in masonry.... Always wear a respirator and change filters frequently
Gi or ya pansy. If you're creating dust then yeah, you don't wear it all day long
What do you want a fucking medal
First job in construction after working 12 years in fast food suppose to be carpentry my life was destroyed employer had me drilling in concrete and blowing out the holes with no protection and now I worry I will die with no hope no treatments no cure
😂 one job isn’t going to kill you. Your lungs will wash out the silica, but if you’re breathing heavy amounts day after day, month after month, year after year it could affect you. Being a non-smoker helps.
I do masonry all the time, and never wear a mask, I'll do better now thanks for uploading this.
This has made me pause n think.... Jeeeez I'm real sorry to hear this buddy, I'm Also in the same trade.. Only I'm in England... I guess These daily duties Go un noticed until shit gets real... I use disc cutters regularly on existing builds etc.. This has made me think.......hope things improve for you... Keep ya head up!!!!!
Sorry Chris and hope you get well soon. I work in construction and every day see people working with dust with little or no protection. People do not realise the danger
I wish you well, thank you for sharing this story, its a mask for me in the future.
People laugh at me for wearing a mask but I know I’m doing right for me
This is very sad, and difficult to understand. I've been working in masonry since 1985, I wear a mask most of the time now, but when I was younger rarely wore it. I also remember working with some old guys well into their 60s and into their 70s never wearing a mask, covered in dust, and I never heard of anybody getting this condition.?
It was his personal responsibility to protect himself? What about his employers, his union, his government?
*News* *flash*, buddy: Your employers, your union, and your government don't give two shits about you. To them you are only an asset that is easily replaceable. Only you can look after yourself.
Welcome to the real world.
Rant Gant Yeah, if people were a lot more realistic, no one would pay taxes, support any union, or work for anyone else.
Now you're just proving your unrealistic attitude. Look up "logical fallacy". Your statement is an exaggeration and you know it. Own your problems.
One of my problems, dear helpful RememberThe SlapFilms, is that some of the problems that I have are problems that I have in common with many, many other people. If people cannot see that they have so many, many things in common, the divide-and-conquer, manage, exploit pigs win. And, I might add, ever so incidentally, that those who pimp for the exploiting pigs also win. I don't seal my self identity off from my potential allies. To your thinking, there are no allies any more?
You're putting unnecessary wear and tare on your keyboard, not2tees.
We make use of vacuums whenever possible. Thin stone cutting is emerging as a serious problem.
chris sorry about what happen to you i have been doing masonry for about thirty years know how it is
HI Chris, I'm Phil. My Father Leland Personette struggled with silicosis for over 16 years. He worked manufacturing adheaves. He passed away on 8/29/2015, I was able to help him with some youtube videos under dusty trades if you would like to watch them. He also has a book available on thebookpatch.com called dusty trades which covers his struggles. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts. God Bless
Nice one I’ll try c if I can get help then
Good
Social Security is not going to pay you so you might
Brick/blocklaying ain't for the faint hearted.
I was Losing weight 🤪
John Bowkett would you have your nostrils full of dust??????
it sounds like you did not keep yoru mask on
A paper mask would have prevented that
@@SuperStrangeone most likely not cleaned/using the same mask, or the fact that he had a beard would mean he needs a proper face fitted mask.
A paper mask doesn’t to shit. Might as well not even wear one. You need to wear a proper respirator that you’re fitted for.
45 year life span? yeah im sure thats got nothing to with eating all the pies.
