This song really needed an introduction before you guys listened to it. The whole album and the album before it tells the story of Ariel (based on the famous work of Goethe named 'Faust'). In this opening track, Ariel is fresh out of loosing his lover Halena. And mephisto talks to him in two forms: disguised (clean vocals) and undisguised (unclean vocals). For the whole story you have to listen to the 'Epica' and 'black halo' albums back to back. But for a track with a similar feeling check out 'a feast for the Vain' where Ariel goes to mephisto's feast.
pro tip : you can watch movies on KaldroStream. I've been using it for watching all kinds of movies during the lockdown.
@Kaysen Jaxon yup, been watching on kaldrostream for since november myself :D
Vin and Sory here is some information about Kamelot and Roy Khan (the singer): Kamelot released the album named Epica, from which the band Epica was inspired to get their name from. Simone Simons from Epica and Kamelot recorded several songs together, one of those is The Haunting (please add it to your list since is the best duet ever). In 2011 Roy Khan retired from Kamelot to prioritize his health and family. He went back to Norway, his native country and joined the Moss Frikirke local church in Moss, Norway. Roy after his retirement has come back to making music in 2018 with his previous band before Kamelot called Conception. I recommend you to listen to The Haunting, Center of the Universe, The black halo and Elizabeth (I, II, III). Nowadays Kamelot has a new singer who is amazing but nowhere near to Roy Khan (personal opinion).
Totally agree, Roy Kahn is the ultimate voice of kamelot.
They should check out Conception. :D Gethsemane! Or the new song Feather Moves.
I recommend you to listen The Band CONCEPTION!, best group ever \m/
The Haunting duet is one of the best things I've ever seen.
Holy F ***, Khan is back with Conception and I did not know! I listened to Conception for the first time on a VHS when I was just a teenager.
Kamelot's The Haunting with Simone Simmons from Epica.
fuck yes EPICA
*chants* do it do it do it!!
Live in Norway 2006!
The studio version has Shagrath from Dimmu Borgir doing the harsh vocals. This live version it's Snowy Shaw (King Diamond, Dream Evil, etc.) doing the harsh vocals.
This song is the first song on 'The Black Halo' album, which is pt.2 of Kamelot's take on Goethe's Faust.
He isn't Snowy Shaw. He's "That Fucking Snowy Shaw"
i vote memento mori for the next kamelot
Such a fantastic song. I second this!
Much yes. Live from Belgrade is amazing
MM is my fav song on Black Halo
@@MrKawika64 same
How on earth did I miss the notification for this??? OMG Kamelot is my faaaave and this song is a masterpiece. So glad you chose the live version. That whole live show is absolutely soul-shaking.
And GOD ALMIGHTY, Kahn is such a showman. So glad he's out of retirement and making music again. If the opportunity ever arrives for you to interview him, he'd be a REAL good choice. Love it, love y'all.
Man I saw Kamelot with Nightwish like 5 years ago and it was such an amazing show! Even being in a fairly small venue
I saw both of them on that tour too. Good times.
Same here. Saw them in Austin, TX. Still the best concert I've been to.
Both together? Would be paradise for me!
Saw them separately while I was in Belgium nightwish on their own and Kamelot with myrath, pretty lit
21:45 Vin, it's off the live DVD - 'One Cold Winter's Night', and it's probably an old 240p upload.
There are a few songs from that same DVD that people have uploaded to youtube in higher quality, most notably the song 'The Haunting' w/Simone Simons of Epica on guest vocals.
The entirety of the Epica and Black Halo albums by Kamelot are a concept album about one man’s quest for knowledge, his downfall, and redemption. I recommend listening to all of the songs from these two albums: Kamelot is an amazing band and Roy Khan (their second singer, who sings on those two albums - and others - and was in the live video) has a phenomenal singing voice and is a Christian as well
So much this! The two albums are actually an interpretation of Goethe's Faust, one of the greatest classical literature works. Both albums put together are rather long and demand paying attention, but the story Kamelot manage to tell is amazing and well-worth the listen!
The 2 albums inspired me to read Goethe's Faust. I love how metal bands have reignited my love for reading. so many good books found purely from music.
Please pleas please: Guys before you listen to those albums listen to Karma. This is Kamelots masterpiece. Epica and Black Halo are great too but they are nowhere near as consistent as Karma.
Sonata Arctica's singer Tony Kakko is a fan of the book My Ishmael, which is makes references to in various songs. Stuff like that happens in metal. I remember Iced Earth did a whole concept album on horror characters called "Horror Show".
Roy Kahn one of the best vocals ever IMO. To understand the song should check the whole album "Epica" ( its a conceptual album based on 'Fausto' by Goethe ... if you're into the reading you can check that book) .
Not the best song to get to know Kamelot tho , would 've recommended "Karma", "Forever" , The Haunting" (with Simone Simons from Epica) "Center of the universe"
Guys, give SAVATAGE a chance. They're a huge band you haven't done yet, and they're one of the best lyricists in metal ever.
You won't be able to do better on Christmas than a reaction to St. Patrick's/Believe, as a point/counterpoint on spirituality.
Cheers!
Hall of the Mountain King
I do like the song " one child"
Kamelot "abandoned " (album version). Incredible vocal performance about the crucifixion.
You really want to hear this man sing and see how perfect his voice is try Kamelot - Edge of Paradise live from One Cold Winter's Night... that intro though!
Finally getting around to reacting to Kamelot!
Thanks for finally reacting to Kamelot! I think that this song wasn't the best at showing the bands talent though. I actually recommend their song Serenade as it shows more of Roy's voice as well as Thomas's musicianship on the guitar.
There are two albums Epica and The Black Halo from Kamelot. Together they tell the story of Faust. This song is from The Black Halo.
Sacrimony, The Haunting (with Simone) and When the Lights are Down are a MUST.
If you want real chills react to Elizabeth from this same concert. It’s a masterpiece!
Kamelot Elizabeth 1-2-3
Yeees!!!
yess
This is from my favorite Kamelot album! Roy Khan is absolutely amazing! Shagrath, singer of Dimmu Borgir, does the harsh vocals on the studio version.
Kamelot is a great band. The singer here, Roy Khan, used to be in a Norwegian band called "Conception". You can check that one out too.
Kamelot- Crossing Two Rivers (singer: Mark Vanderbilt)
Kamelot- Soul Society
Conception- Among the Gods
Conception- Roll the Fire
I'm so happy!! Another one of my favorite bands! This song is amazing. You need to react to more!!
VinAnd Sori it is a concept album and you should listen to the whole album. It is based of the Faust poem. Memento Mori the 12th song is great to react to. Soul Society is also on this album and is a song on faith and heaven.
Glad to see you finally discover Kamelot. A couple of my favorites from them are Karma and Ghost Opera. Good review...thanks!
Saw Kamelot live this year. They are coming back, and I've already got tickets for their next visit. They're that good. Some will tell you that their new singer isn't good, but that's emotion talking.
Epica - Kingdom of Heaven
Yes!
Helloween ☆ Keeper of the seven keys 🎃
Damn good choice.
Roy Khan is one of the best singers in metal. Try his first band, Conception: they did four amazing records during the 90s, and now they have returned 20 years later. Try the songs 'Roll the Fire', 'Under a Mouning Star', ' Missionary Man', ''Flow'...
Fun Fact, the harsh vocals are performed by Shagrath from Dimmu Borgir
The singer Roy Khan is one of the most underrated singers around. Stolen from Norway to the states, and now he is back.. with his old band Conception, which is much better than Kamelot. And guess what guys.. he's a priest. ;)
How on earth is Roy Khan underrated?
@@Un4Given71 lol amen! Maybe with young pups who never heard Kamelot with Roy.
Well, he's not a priest, but he have worked at a church. At least as far as I know.
@@justahusk8151 Ahh, I stand corrected then. Was pretty sure he actually went for priesthood. 😅
@@Un4Given71 Completely underrated here in his homeland atleast. He should be way more well known. Outside the metal community hardly anyone has heard about him.
Kamelot - Elizabeth live for next reaction
You need to specify which version because it technically is a 3 part song.
Jason
The combined 3 songs from One Cold Winter’s Night live concert. Simply this video
ruclips.net/video/ecvHBLadaxM/видео.html
Powerwolf - In the Name of God
Sabaton - The Last Stand
Deus Vult!
Shame this wasn't the version with a sick solo and awesome base backing.
I scream along when "I AM THE URGE OF YOUR FLESH!" Comes along every time.
Sori has to be more confident in stating what she took out of the song. It's not a test to find out if you can figure out what the artist mean, la mort de l'auteur afterall, but what you read into it
Within Temptation - Paradise ft Tarja
So the way this works is this album "the black halo" is part 2 of a 2 album story the story starts with the album "epica" than " the black halo"
And the story told in the albums is actually very complex and deep.
Also react to Elizabeth live version it's so good
Elizabeth was my suggestion. This however got the most votes. And thats how the alliance picks work...
I knew from your appreciation of Rammstein that the groove from this song would get you, as evidenced by your coordinated head bobbing. Finding high audio quality live performances for American power metal bands is unfortunately more difficult than European ones. We just don’t have the same love for the genre here as they do, hence the budgets are just lower. I assume this was chosen to give a glimpse into the Roy Khan’s fabulous live vocals, as well as the theatrical element Kamelot can put out there.
Fun fact: this song has been my alarm clock for years. The recorded version has a slow build and wakes me up gradually, but if I’m deep asleep (hungover), it wakes me up every time when the big riffs drop.
Good selection of the song
I’m so scared to watch this reaction because I’ve asked for this band for almost 4 months now and this is hands down my favorite band
More kamelot!!!
Love Kamelot with all ma soul,Roy Khan pure perfection on vocals, new singer = like a knife for my years,i'm sorry fans, but it is!
Yes! I've been wanting this band for a while! But, y'all need less live performances and more studio releases.
Sabaton - To Hell and Back music video
Celtic Frost - A Dying God Coming Into Human Flesh
Immolation - Father, You're Not A Father lyric video
Steel Panther - Stripper Girl live at British Invasion
Necrophagist - Fermented Offal Discharge
Kamelot was one of the first bands I discovered when I was first getting into rock and Metal. They hold a special place in my heart. Roy Khan's vocals are just magnificent. This specific song was my introduction to Kamelot. When I discovered Roy had retired I stopped listening to Kamelot. I tried one song with Tommy, but he seemed to be trying to sound like Roy, and that killed it for me. The Kamelot song I'm going to request is "Ghost Opera" Fantastic song and video!!
I prefer Kamelot up to Karma. Karma is a masterpiece. Labyrinth another great band u should check out.
Fan fact: the girl in the video is his wife
Whoa srsly?
Not Roy's wife. Wife of guitarist Thomas Youngblood, Kari Youngblood.
@@Hikdin No, that is Roy's wife, Elizabeth, who also sings on Nights Of Arabia. The woman that sings on Elizabeth and Abandoned is Mari Youngblood.
Mari*
Moonspell - Night Eternal
but the music video!!! if they dont get a copyright strike that is...
Kamelot was one of the first metal bands that I really got into when I was younger, and because of that, they'll always be special to me. I've seen them live on every tour since 2006 and they're one of those rare bands that seems to age like a fine wine and get better year after year. I would really recommend listening and reacting to the song "Liar Liar" from them as it is a newer track, but also is one of the best songs that they've written featuring their current vocalist - Tommy Karevik. This particular song is the opening track of the album The Black Halo and that album is part II of a conceptual piece based off of the poem of Faust - as many people have commented before. In the first album (Epica), the main character of Ariel (played here by their vocalist, Roy Khan) had sold his soul to the devil, or Mephisto. During the course of Part I, this decision comes to cost him as he pushes away a girl whom he had fallen in love with, Helena. Because of this, she's left brokenhearted and kills herself. It's also revealed that she was pregnant with Ariel's child. This revelation causes Ariel to fall deeper into despair. The Black Halo picks up at this point when Ariel is at his lowest and still grieving over Helena and their unborn child. The song itself is Mephisto showing Ariel just how much control he has over him and is calling Ariel to grieve in him ("Tell me all about your pain, down to the detail") instead of turning back to God.
If you take into account that the whole album Black Halo is based on Foust (the book) things make sense.
Bolt Thrower - When Cannons Fade
The voice of Mephisto is "That Fucking Snowy Shaw."
Look up Dream Evil's song "The Ballad." In that song they say the funniest line ever, "No Matter where we go he's always there, That Fucking Snowy Shaw."
Snowy Shaw was drummer to Dream Evil, Ozzy Osborne, and Singer to Therion. A big tall fucking Viking.
So basically The Black Halo is the follow up to Kamelot's concept album Epica. March of Mephisto is where Mephisto makes his move to control the main character, Ariel, using Marguerite as a pawn as she looks and sounds like his ex-girlfriend Helena who drowned herself in the river as Ariel left her, not knowing that she was pregnant.
Two phenomenal albums, but ideally listened to in full.
Control Denied - Expect the Unexpected
Forevor or Elizabeth live from the One cold winters night performance
The song is 4 minutes. You can listen to the album recording.
This was the song that introduced me to Kamelot, when they released that album in 2005, and I loved the groovy riff with Roy's singing. Been a Kamelot fan since.
Love Kamelot! Fun fact about the amazing singer: he quit the band a couple of years ago and started working at his local church as a counselor and youth minister.
MetallAndy he just released an ep with conception
Tawl Valdis So I’ve heard. Haven’t had the chance to check it out yet though. Is it good?
MetallAndy yes it is but there are only six songs . I Wish there was more but still great to have the six.
They also released a single prior to the EP. Check out Feather Moves from the single. All tracks from the single and EP are on RUclips
Kamelot - Memento Mori (studio version)
This song(from the same album) is an epic masterpiece and basically the conclusion to the 2 album concept based on Faust.
One of the greatest songs ever IMO. It's only gotten better with time for me.
Yes!! An awesome band from Florida!! Love it!!
Arch Enemy - We Will Rise + Fields of Desolation (LIVE Tyrants of the Rising Sun)
Artist: Halford. Album: Resurrection. Song: Silent scream.
There's a lot of this symbolism in A Feast for the Vain (another of their songs) too.
Hey! This song us the opener to their album The Black Halo. That album, and the previous one, Epica, is a rock opera of Faust! They're wonderful albums, and I suggest you listen to them both in order to get the full effect and story! Honestly they're two of my favorite albums from them, and Kamelot is my favorite band.
Elizabeth - Kamelot
That is my favourite song. It may be diabolical and dark in nature but it helped me through my darkest times. It may have been fire from Hell, but it illuminated the darkness. And eventually destroyed it. That's how I'd describe how it helped me through depression. It was incredible source of solace, and kept me company. It may sound creepy, but it's not to me.
Yesterday I was just thinking about recommending Kamelot - Soul Society !!!!!!!!! What a coincidence! that you actually did Kamelot the next day.
Glad y'all doing this song :)
I've always loved this song.
Nice! Been waiting for at least some power metal. Now do Stratovarius or Sonata Arctica!
Another awsome pick! What I find disturbing is the lack of Overkill love 😉
Only the real Mephisto would pick a video without solo
Kamelot's Elizabeth of the same concert (One cold winter's night) and The Expedition (From an earlier period)
Avantasia - The Scarecrow, please, please, please!!! From The Flying Opera live :)
Such a shame you had to react to this version. While the dvd is good, i would have gone with the studio version, you even missed the solo!
Roy has always been one of my favorite metal singers, so underrated.
React to the Elizabeth suite, studio version!
The song is the beginning of a two part story that starts on the bands previous album Epica (where the band Epica got their name) the story is an adaptation of Goethe's Faust
ruclips.net/video/K0yYxOV-bRU/видео.html
ruclips.net/video/OdwYUwuItsI/видео.html for the keyboard solo
If not react to it you should at least hear the studio version and watch the original video. Much better than the sound quality of that live performance!
Please do Kamelot - Elizabeth (I, II, III) live at the same concert!!!
Also: Roy Khan (the singer) is a priest!
The studio version of this song is definitely better than the live one - there's a cool bridge section that's entirely cut out of the live version, for...some reason. It's also paced a bit more deliberately and pulls you more effectively into the mood it sets, in my opinion - in the live version they seem to have sped it up to make the performance more exciting for the audience, but it loses some of the personality.
In a similar vein, should you return to Kamelot some day (which would be cool, they're a really good band), and a song you react to happens to be either Falling Like the Fahrenheit or Liar Liar (Wasteland Monarchy), I recommend making sure that you pick the full studio versions. Like, for Liar Liar, the version of the song used in the music video and for all live performances is HORRIBLY edited down (which is a shame, because the actual 6-minute song off the album is fantastic).
Vin has a thing for live versions. Totally ruins my interest, in fact it violently kicks me off the excitement high I get when I discover they react to something I've been waiting for like this.
Great vids as always. Any update on the Aenema reaction? Also you should check out Scar the Martyr (joeys band after slipknot) and the song blood host... Have a great Xmas guys
Yeah Kamelot done! The singer Roy Khan is a terrific one with his teatrical voice and way to sing. This song is extracted from Black Halo album, which is a free reinterpretation of Faust by Goethe (like the second part of the lyrical concept, started with the previous album "Epica", which the band Epica was inspired for the name from). Great choice.
It's really hard to discuss songs from Kamelots albumns "Epica" and "The Black Halo" as they are two parts of the same story.
If I remember right, Mephisto made a deal with the character for his soul, in that deal Mephisto can only claim that soul once the main character has tired of life and exploring his world.
So I think Mephisto here is trying to torment the protagonist into depression and giving up so he can claim his soul.
I honestly recommend giving the whole two albumns a listen, as they discuss the crisis of faith and existence of the story Faust (upon which these albumns were based).
Really cool stuff! Keep up the amazing discussions.
the song is based on the story faust where Mephistopheles tempts a mortal. the whole album Black Halo is a rendition of the story.
Anthrax - In the End, In My World, Indians, Inside Out and What Doesn't Die
*Machine Head - Halo (full version)*
Please, please, please. I hate how the shortened version cuts out one of the best solos of all time imo
React to Conception, it is the first band of Roy Khan, Kamelot's ex vocalist. Try Roll the Fire or Gethsemane!!
Or some new songs.
Mephisto (fully written as Mephistopheles) is another name of the devil. He has a big part in Goethe's "Faust". The protagonist Dr. Faust makes a pact with Mephisto in order to get knowledge and wisdom, but in the end he loses his love because of this, Gretchen. Later he tries to save his soul from the devil.
The album of this song is a concept album about a man in a similar situation. He has made a pact with Mephisto, but lost his wife, Helena.
Interesting for me as a Christian is that Roy Khan seemed to project his own search for God and what life is about into the lyrics, because not much later he became a reborn Christian.
You should know this song is part of a concept album{one which also dovetails, it's not the singer and band expressing their own views, it's part of a story. Like Alireza{another commenter} said- it it bears repeating "This song really needed an introduction before you guys listened to it. "
Kamelot "Memento Mori"
Cradle of Filth "The Rape and Ruin of Angels (Hosannas in Extremis)" "The Byronic Man"
The Electric Hellfire Club "I Dream of Demons"
Wolfpack 44 "The Black March"
Old Man's Child "Phantoms of Mortem Tales"
The two albums of Kamelot called Epica and The Black Halo (2nd one contains this song) are concept albums loosely based on Goethe's famous play Faust in which the lyrics mostly are characters talking. Mephisto is of course one of the characters which is Lucifer as you said. You should listen to the studio version for the better musical impact.
Roy Khan wrote some of the best lyrics in all of metal.
Kamelot- the haunting
As much as I love this DVD and performance, you should've watched the official video (unedited version) the keyboard solo is omitted from the live version
Recommended Kamelot Live Performances I suggest are Elizabeth 1-3, Abandoned, Forever from the same show. And also I strongly suggest Under Grey Skies from I Am The Empire Live Performance
The Black Dahlia Murder - The Window, The Lonely Deceased, Deathmask Devine, Abysmal, Closed Casket Requiem, I Will Return, Denounced Disgraced, Crucifed in Cruciform, Nocturnal, Funeral Thirst, Miscarriage, Dave Goes to Hollywood, Statutory Ape Moonlight Equilibrium.
Please give any of those songs a listen.
I kinda wish they would have watched the actual music video. The cinematography is so sick
Do more from this concert!
Roy Khan was the original lead siger of Kamelot, and the one you saw there in that video. Some years later he quit the band after he became a christan. He said the music was becoming to dark, and he did not feel right about performing it anymore.
Rhapsody of Fire - Heroes of the Waterfall Kingdom
I wouldn't say this is the best song to listen to when being introduced to kamelot, but it's a decent track. May I recommend Center of the Universe, Soul Society, and Forever. Roy Khan is such an incredible vocalist.
Kamelot--lier lier
Vin: "The people in your life that, that challenge you and tell you things that you don't wanna hear, those are the people that actually love you." Hmm, really? I wonder who has been doing that around here?
Roy Khan and his first band... Conception. They join their forces after 20 years and released a new Conception record.
Conception is one of the greatest prog metal band in my opinion
One Singer four bands
Lost Horizon - Denial of fate
Crystal eyes - confession of the maker
Heed - Ashes
Harmony - What If
